You tell me.
Mollie · 20 years, 4 months ago
Popular--with Fruheads or with the rest of the world?
iPauley Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
My question exactly. In assuming the latter (while knowing what assumptions get me), I chose less, for that is the perception I get in interacting with the world around me. I've always felt that I've been on the short end of the popularity scale.

If that had been among Frheads, I'd have chosen About Average.

i am the inverse. among the general population, i am more or less average, among fruheads i am less than.

Who gives a damn and where is the "this is a really inane question and I'm just answering it to get it off my front page" option?
nate... Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
My question(s) exactly.
100% dainty! Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
::smack down:: You tell 'em, Ellen! ;)

I chose about average. Fruheads seem to have that nerdy, kind, accepting, non-back-biting popularity that just garners them a lot of friends and fun. ::hugs::
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
I couldn't agree more particularly as far as the nerdy, kind and inclusive part is concerned ;-)

Fruheads seem to have that nerdy, kind, accepting, non-back-biting popularity

omgrotfl

please tell that was sarcasm

nate... Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
well, it's true... except for the "popularity" bit.

:)
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Amen to that :)
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

Anyone who thinks this community is completely "non-back-biting" is, I think, just lucky enough to be on the plus side of the "popularity" curve.

nate... Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
I dunno.. it really hasn't been bad as of late.
*shrugs*

But perhaps I'm just out of the loop.

I think a lot of people here know who I am... but being popular is more than being known its being liked or prefered or something... possibly having to do with the ratio of good hair days to calories burned. popularity is odd like that. and no. I'm not.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
You're the most popular person I know, by any formula.
Wintress Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
And he knows a LOT of formulas. :D

Who really gives a flying flip? Popularity is overrated. So with no option to select that answer, I went with my own little universe which says I'm more popular than all you losers put together! Yah!

And the sky is a nice shade of lavender in my world, thanks for asking! :)
rufus t firefly · 20 years, 4 months ago
But only because I'm older and have had more time to accumulate admirers ;).
sheryls · 20 years, 4 months ago
i wasn't popular at all in HS. or in college, really. among the fruheads, maybe average, but in the real world, i was/am a nerdy girl :P
Kris 'engaged' Bedient · 20 years, 4 months ago
I took the question to mean popularity among fruheads, and as such, I think it's interesting that people overwhelminly think of themselves as average to below average. I think that happens too with the majority of american thinking they are middle class, when lots of them are above that. Is it false modesty?

I esteem a lot of fruheads and think they are way cool. and they probably don't know who they are, and don't know they are held in such high favor. They would probably be surprised that others think they are so cool. Maybe I'm referring to you. Yes, you. I think you rock, and I'm happy when I see you online, and I have you marked as one of my contacts so your name goes all yellow when I see you around.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
that's an interesting measure of popularity. josh should run a query of the Most Frequent-Contact-Listed Fruheads :P
Mamalissa! · 20 years, 4 months ago
I assumed it meant in the "real world" and not among Fruheads, in real life or online. I voted more popular, but I'm just having a great weekend (esp. since I just remembered that I don't have work tomorrow!). Last Thursday I would've voted less.

Well, thanks to world con I realized that I am quite popular and kinda famous. On several ocations this past year people have asked for my autograph. It kinda is mind boggling to me, but hey if it makes them happy.

Because of he magazine I work for I have become a geust at more than one convention of the past several years. This year the big ones were ICON, Balticon, and I am gearing up for Philcon. Plus Irecently showed my work at Worldcon, and feel I may have enough momentum to get a Hugo nomination.

 gee-- bitter much?

First of all, it's an honest answer. He is getting to be an increasingly popular artist in the sci-fi/ fantasy fan community.

Which. Is something he's been working hard at for years now.

So sue him if he's enjoying the attention.

He earned it.

Second, um... there is such a thing as being tongue-in-cheek.

Seriously, did you think "I'm famous" was meant to be taken seriously?

zil Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

yeah, I'm bitter, its widely known.

I don't begrudge him enjoying the attention, I just tend to read him the wrong way when he posts about it. I'm sorry I'm too stupid to understand his genius.

I meant popular among fruheads, that was entire point. I suggested a number of polls along similar lines as an experiment. Obviously if we were talking about average among fruheads there would be equal numbers above average as below but I expected the poll results to be heavily skewed, as they are. I was inspired by some classic research where they asked people on projects what percent of the success of the project do they contribute. When the study was done in the US, the results on average added to more than 100%, people overestimated their importance. In Japan the results added to less than 100%.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
It was interesting that so many people assumed it was popularity in general. I assumed within fruheads. I wonder how many of us would give different answers to the different interpretations of the question.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
To actually answer the question, though. I think I'm more popular among fruheads than I am among the general populace. But I still think it's about average. *shrug*. In the real world, it's below average. :)
rufus t firefly Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
I took it to mean popularity in general, andwould DEFINITELY have answered differently had I thought it was among fruheads. I've got no reason to believe any of you like me at all. Sorry!
Doktor Pepski, kommie · 20 years, 4 months ago
I was never one for popularlity, and I think at this stage in my life, I don't need to start now. sigh
Arbie · 20 years, 4 months ago
I agree (without quite the fervor) with those who think a poll on popularity is... questionable. I am somewhat surprised by the vehemence of some comments, reminds me of the comments to the classic question "Do you think Jian is gay?".
But seriously, as an experiment (as Gordon explained) the results are slightly interesting. And much as I would have guessed. The vast majority of people underestimate how other people feel about them (or most people are incredibly modest). Which actually contrasts nicely to the results Gordon mentioned about how people overestimate how much they contribute to a situation.
