Celtic Music

I went to see the Prodigals Friday and it got me thinking that I've never see another FHDC resident, other than Carey, at concert by an Irish or Celtic band. I'd think there would be a natural overlap. There are lots of GBS fans and they have a strong Celtic influence but that is about it. I find these bands have the same kick-ass energy as Fruvous. I get the same sort of high watching them. Few things can lift my spirits like a Cape Breton Fiddler. Are there other devotees of Celtic music out there?

I meant other than at GBS. They aren't a celtic band, they just have celtic influence.

Gotta love that "Celtic influence" - The Paperboys, Spirit of the West, Captain Tractor...hooray for Canadian bands with Celtic influences!

I like them mostly live... that's how Spirit of the West hooked me, then I got into them as a pop group as well as a celtic rock group....

I *heart* the Paperboys, but how can you forget Seven Nation, who is almost famous and from the US.� However there are other bands who have a celtic inflewance on a few songs, but it's not like GBS, or the Paperboys like Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayham!

um.... I have a family member that plays the bagpipes and speaks gaelic... and a group called the Rankin Family out of nova scocia does a good bit of celtic revival stuffs....

The basketball team is pronounced Seltics.

The funny thing is that there is a Scottish Football team called hte Celtics pronounced the same way. You'd think they'd know better there.

being that, until only very recently, it was illegal to speak Gaelic, anglization of gaelic words was common. Celtic (no "the") was formed when it was still illegal to speak�- hence the mispronunciation. In english (beurla), a "c" at the beginning of a word is usually soft, in Gaelic, it is always hard.

I am obseesed with irish and celtic music. While I have no specific bands that I enjoy a lot, I usually get my fix from Celtic collections ( I love the Narada music lable). In St. Louis, there's an annual Celtic music festival which I usually go to. It rocks! Turlough O'Carolan is awesome! The Kavanaugh family in st. louis is another really good irish/celtic band when they get together and play. And i just love the gaelic language when it is sung. oh wow!!!

I'm mostly into trad tho.... that was really the highlight of wandering around Ireland for the time I did...seeing little groups/singers in pubs. god it was great.

Mmm.. tradmusicinpubs. There's nothing like it. I like Irish music and all, but to see it in a little wooden box called a "pub" as it was meant to be heard is divine.

I couldn't agree more. That's the way I try to find Celtic music when I'm in Ireland.
But seeing Peter Mulvey in a small Irish bar/club/pub isn't bad either ;-)

Different pub and different band every night... and they were always pretty good.

But one of the most fun things was when the old crusty guys at the bar would just break into song. :)

So is the Cheryl Wheeler song "potato" count as traditional Irish music?

The closest I've come to seeing Irish music in a pub is seeing Black 47 at Connelly's.

I love celtic music. My favs are (in no particular order): Susan Mckeown, Aine Minogue, Equation, The Paperboys, Capercaillie, La Lugh/Eithne Ni Ullachain (Eithne has an incredible voice and the cutest Irish accent ever)

My friend classifies them as Newfoundland Celtic Folk Pop, and I classify them as Celtic since they do hail from the Tropical Island of Newfoundland

My boyfriend hooked me on some good stuff from Newfoundland. Celtic Connection and The Fables are two really good ones. But the reason no one ever sees me at concerts is simply that I don't go... I haven't really been to any concerts off campus (saw Guster on campus this year and Lifehouse two years ago). There just aren't any bands that I'm interested in seeing that tour around the Rochester area. And even if there are (i.e. BNL) I can't afford the tickets.

I grew up listening to far too much Irish Rovers and such, and consequently drew to dislike Celtic music for a while. But I like what GBS did to modernize it. And although they are very pop-y (popish?) The Coors weave a lot of their irish heritage into their songs. I� second any rec. on the Chieftains.

Ones that haven't been mentioned: Leahy- best live, to get the full effect of the dancing. Natalie McMaster -�great fiddle playing.

If you like Natalie check out her cousin Ashley MacIsaac. He's nuts but a fiddle god.

heh heh....I didn't mention him for�three reasons. One, many (most?) people around here know him. Two, I dislike the way he used to abuse his instruments. Three, I haven't heard anything he has done since he bottomed out and shook his coke habit, so I dunno if he is playing up to par yet.

I loved Ashley's newest cd that came out last year. There's a version of Mull of Kintyre on it with the lead singer of Default that is absolutely gorgeous. I think he's mellowed out a bit - in a good way. ;)

For anyone in the rochester area - Linda Rutherford and Celtic Fire are an incredible band! I'm not sure if the are still together...i saw them at and East End fest a few years back and the opened for Fruvous at the Lilac Fest in '98. They are a good mix of celtic/rock and a bit of country thrown in (but not too much to make it annoying).� They are at least 2 albums out and i know they sell them at Fantasic Records on Monroe Ave.

There's a SF area comic who claims that Irish music is why the Irish drink.... (I know, I know...)

Funny. I try to make a point to turn to station to Thistle and Shamrock.

I mean. Car Talk, Wha'd'ya Know?, Wait...wait...Don't Tell Me!, This American Life, Celtic Music (we have a local show too), Prairie Home Companion. I love NPR on Saturday! :-D

for me it's sunday....there is absolutly nothing better then laying in bed and listening to the local news at 9am, Wait Wait don't tell me at 10 and Car Talk at 11. by the time Prairie Home Companion comes on i realize it's probably time to start the day....

I like the skits, but sometimes I think I'm listening to Minnesota's Lawrence Welk. Maybe you need to be from the midwest to really appreciate it.

I hate the skits but often like the music. I always get frustrated when I stop on the station to listen to the song but then they go into a skit.

In your opinion, what counts as celtic music?� One of my favorite bands, Barachois, the members are Acadian, coming from Prince Edward Island.��Although they do come from Canada, the fiddling style that their music is largely based upon, has an obvious Celtic ifluence, would you count this as somewhat Celtic music?� Or, how would you classify this?

Music being Celtic has nothing to do with the country it is from or the ethnic origins of hte music. If it is Celtic style it is celtic. Many if not most of my favorite Celtic bands are from the US and Canada.
