worst band names

Ok, we might be blind because we all like a band that's a serious contender for this title, but who has a worse name than "Moxy Fruvous" (or "Toad the Wet Sprocket")?
I don't really have an answer but I've always been fascinated how stupid band names can, in time, come to be totally normal to us. I remember when I'd just heard the name Moxy Fruvous but didn't know the band I was making fun of it left and right, calling my cat Dirkie Fruvous and just...it was a joke to me.
It's always been true...as soon as a band becomes known and you say it enough and they have legitimate music...the fact that their name is stupid just seems to fade. :) Strawberry Alarm Clock The Band Bone Thugs 'N Harmony (or whatever) Eddie From Ohio :) They Might Be Giants Barenaked Ladies Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams :) Buttless Chaps And on and on and ON. Most band names are inherently pretty silly and dumb. :) We just come to accept them.
ok, I was watching Jay Leno last night and a band called "The Soundtrack of Our Lives" was on... they weren't bad but the mixing left a little to be desired. However, I fail to see how you can name your band something like that unless your life is so dull that only one genre of music defines your life.... I nominate "The Soundtrack of Our Lives"
the worst part is that their cd is called "behind the music." i didn't even think they were real when i first heard of them.
How about:
Refridgerators of Distinction Radiant Pig Robot Monster
hey, what's wrong with radiant pig? it's a _charlotte's web_ reference, so it's automatically cool. and so are they. :)
but it's not like they picked it out of thin air... any UFO theorist worth their weight in anal probes knows that a "foo fighter" is an older term (WWII?) for a UFO. given Dave Grohl's penchant for all things extra-terrestrial. it actually makes quite a lot of sense.
Or how about the perennial favourite "Ass Machine"
I'm going to be unpopular for this one, but I also think "They Might Be Giants" is kind of dumb. As for fake band names, in the opening dance number of the Indian film Gumnaam (which is seen at the beginning of Ghost World as well) the band (full of Indian guys) is called "Ted Lyons and his cubs" Yech! Wait....but....we're discussing worst band names. :P (And, it was really hard to get that bold thing with images still not loading....so I hope you all appreciate it.)
Hey, Vertical Horizon is a good Oxymoron... Not as good as Angel Satan, but better than JUMBO SHRIMP...
> The Goo Goo Dolls.
On the other hand, we likely never would have heard of them if they hadn't changed their name to The Goo Goo Dolls. The story I heard says they used to call themselves The F*** Buckets. Imagine trying to get radioplay with a name like that. -- Pauley
When were they called that?
When I worked with them in '89 at Record Theatre, they were called the Goo Goo Dolls then.
I heard once that Finger 11 used to be called "Rainbow Butt Monkeys"
It's true. But then they found out they couldn't sell any CDs (or get people to come to their shows) under that name. Go figure.
I always figured that Blind Melon was a riff on the legendary bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson.
And now I have Terminally Groovy in my head. (or is it groovie?)

There's one that's really silly but I always thought it was a bit brilliant in its way, in terms of attendance.

This forum is making me think of the bad band name generator (and I wish I could remember the url for it), the home of such *cough* fabulous bands as "Because we're penguins!" and "Ronald McDonald Is Not My Magical Friend!" In real life I think I'd have to go with "And You Will Know Them By The Trail Of The Dead"

Damn, "Earth to Doris" is an old Was (Not Was) song!! Okay, so I saw so many bad ones in the Chicago Reader listings I had to paste this one.... PRODIGAL SON BAR & GRILL 2626 N. Halsted: Music at 9 PM. Fri 2/14, Reagan National Crash Diet, Tuffets, Treason Brothers. Sat 2/15, Lozenge, Herc., Jootwtsylfaess, Life Rocks! Sun 2/16, 8 PM, Dead Steel Mill, Urinal Mints. Mondays, Karaoke Dreams hosted by Rory Lake, Velcro Lewis (no cover). Thu 2/20, 8 PM, Swansea Mass, Cock E.S.P., Gays in the Military. Fri 2/21, Kasper Hauser, Children's Hour, Brendan Massei. Sat 2/22, Steepwater Band, Velcro Lewis & His 100 Proof Band. Sun 2/23, 8 PM, Paul B. Davis, Lord of the Yum Yums, DJ Doug Pound. 773-248-3093. Aren't these TERRIBLE????
That's Jon Fishman's band - the drummer from Phish. Speaking of bad band names...
i'm thinking i know too much about band name origins now... Hoobastank is a corruption of someone's middle name (i want to say the bass player, but i could be wrong).

I'm just glad that nobody said Batnose or Trainwreck with Clowns.
hey, compared to some of the other fake bands i've been in, those are great. i used to be in, among others, evil amoebas, daniel's dream, martha's vineyard, unconvinced, ugly snowmen, and constipated camels.

anal c**t also, it's really fun to go through the british hit singles anthology and check out the names of all the bad 70's and 80's bands that only got to 49 in the charts and stuff. like: we've got a fuzzbox and we're gonna use it at school we were trying to think up a name for our mate's band and we came up with 'levitating doorhandles' :D and check out: http://www.annoyyourfriends.com/randband.html
here's more from the Reader... so great... BOTTOM LOUNGE 3206 N. Wilton: Music after 9 PM. Fri 2/21, Chinese Downhill, Flatline, Sullen, Twice Removed (18 & over). not as terrible as the last batch I found, but Chicago's a wonderland for bad band names!
oh, yeah, the bottom lounge, the club with no atmosphere at all! i didn't realize how many badly named bands there were around here. good lord.
ooh! and i forgot! more fire crew (that might be spelled 'cru', i dunno) :D

Moxy Fruvous is a great name because it sticks in people's minds. I went into a store looking for a Fruvous CD once and asked if they sold any. It was a small store and I swear, everyone turned around curious as to what I was talking about and started asking about them.

Squirrel Nut Zippers (huh?) Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies String Cheese Incident (this just brings to mind some very strange visuals) Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction Dr Phibes and his amazing house of Wax Equations Siouxe and the Banshees Meatloaf (i have to agree with this one) Milli Vanilli (shouldn't this be an ice cream flavour?) UB40 INXS (inks?) Kissing the Pink N'Sync (do you know how long it took me to pronounce this name...damn those random apotrophes!!) Hear'Say (speaking of....) The Hamsters (such a noble animal.....) SNMNMNM (ok...i know it's supposed to be the band members names....but please......) Pantera (is this supposed to be a shampoo?) Duran Duran (i'll be stoned for this one...but i can think of nothing but stinky asian fruit x 2) .....that's enough for now amy
yeah. katherine whelan's voice is a dead ringer for billie holliday's.
Awww....come on, SNMNMNM is just so much fun to say! (Though I agree that it's a pretty bad name...)
Duran Duran (i'll be stoned for this one...but i can think of nothing but stinky asian fruit x 2)
It's from the film Barbarella starring Jane Fonda. But you already knew that. :) It's from the film Barbarella starring Jane Fonda. Of course i did...;-) but but having grown up with my mother chopping up duran fruit...that is all i can think of...and boy Do They Reek (the fruit, not the band)!!!!!! As for sqirrle nut zippers...i didn't know they were a candy, thanks to those who pointed it out :-)....i do like their music, but i still think they have a silly name....
I was hoping someone would have mentioned String Cheese Incident. -- The impression I got from an NPR story I heard about them is that their fans are even more bizzarely devoted/cultish than we are here.
IIRC, they actually have their own travel agency. It was started by the band after a few bad reservations or something, but their fans all book through the official agency too when following tour dates. This has probably been my stupid commentary for the evening. Pantera = Panther in spanish. INXS = in excess. not so bad. I *never* got Pink Floyd. huh? Am I missing some profound cultural reference here? hm, i think i'm with your boyfriend on this one - "Pepper" is a far superior song to "mmbop." of course, that's about the extent of my knowledge of butthole surfer/hanson songs, so what do i know ;) My contributions to this list are: The Dead Milkmen (love 'em.)
"The Dead Milkmen (love 'em.)"
i have one song by them- "if you love someone set them on fire" actually, yesterday this girl who sits in front of me in homeroom was looking through my ipod, and apparently she used to know one of them or something. i would've asked her more today, but she got suspended for beating some other girl up. go figure. oh, yeah, this is about names, isn't it? uhm...good charlotte is a horrible name. maybe someone said that already..if you did, i agree. and 'the spinners' is an odd name too...they do that 'rubberband man' song from the officemax commercial.
but good charlotte is a reference to a children's book! the band seems pretty sucky but i remember loving the book.
see, i always thought of a dog or something....like it fetches or sits, and you go "Good charlotte....gooood dog."
that's just me, though. i'm weird like that.
the book is called good charlotte. i'm not sure if i made that clear or if it seemed i meant charlotte's web or something. i wonder sometimes if annyone in that band ever read the book, or just saw the spine.
i really dislike "hole" & "garbage". The Frank and Walters NO! Okay it is bit stupid but at lkeats they had a story to their name, it is reference to the wonderful habit that existed in Ireland of locking people up in asylums just because they had children outside of marriage, or were homosexual or unconventional in any other way like uh..Frank and Walter were. Maybe my brother was winding me up with that one there but I think the point about the name sticking in your head applies here as with Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, Pop Will Eat Itself and my new favourites Do Me Bad Things...it's very rare I hear a new band, like their stuff and can then remember their name to go seethem live. dont get me wrong. i love the frank and walters! i found them in a cut-out bin at my old station and thus i only have the one album - i think it's called Colours? i could be totally talking out of my ass. i love the song Indian Ocean (i'm drinking tea in the taj mahal..) and most ofthe songs on the album. wow, i cant belive you've heard of them :D and, for the record, Pop Will Eat Itself was my first concert! they were opening for Nine Inch Nails. loved 'em.

Oh man, this is such a great topic. A lot of those names made me laugh out loud. {g} I'd like to echo some of the above posts by saying that Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are rotten names (and I hate those bands) and so is Herman's Hermits (and I *like* that band). Hrm. I dislike names like Matchbox 20 (but isn't it Matchbox Twenty now?) and I think they're called Maroon 5? Whenever I see a generic, crappy band that I don't know about on MTV or MTV2, I call them Arthropod 60. It's just a catch-all name I made up for new and crappy bands.{g} And for all of you haters of badly spelled names, let me aggravate you, by bringing up Ludacris, Mystikal, and Fabolous. But they aren't bands, they're individual rap dudes. My friend'shusband was in some lame cover band called the Scared Turtles before.Oh yikes, and isn't there an Australian band called They Might Be Vaginas?

If I had a weird band it would be called Spontaneous Travel Plans and our first album would be Spoon Guard. With a picture of a spoon on the cover. Our second album would be North On Finch. (Finch is a street in my city that runs east and west. It's sort of an inside joke.) No, I'm serious.

"Avril, Floyd, and Moxy"? - good name for a trio of puppets. Actually, 'Pink Floyd' comes from the first names of two blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. And yes, the name 'The Anderson Council' has been taken, too. I didn't even know that 'Moxy Fruvous' wasa band name till I had surfedthis site pretty thoroughly - that's how bad a name it is. And the name 'Lavigne' looks like 'vagina' and sounds like 'latrine'. Either way, it's where I put my dick.

Come on people! All American Rejects is a terrible name! ...Actually for these guys, it's not so bad... I sure as hell rejected them. They absolutely suck. Also Good Charolette... That name is just pure stupidity. Well I guess it just goes to show you... if the band has a sucky name, chances are... they suck.

How about when Prince changed his name to a logo? I think that really is the worst possible name, It didn't even have a way to express it with sounds. When he was involved in a lawsuit their was an disagreement on how to refer to him during the trial. The judge finally decided to through out all the nonsense and use his birth name.
A friend and I had a radio show in high school, about the time Prince changed his name. We decided that the symbol meant "Androgyny makes me horny," and it was pronounced "hkktth." No, I can't spell that phonetically.
for a while, wasn't he claiming that you pronounced it "christopher"?

one of the worst band names of all time (imo) is that new band called:
Los Lonely Boys bah! me hates it. umm... what else... Jethro Tull invented the seed drill and the horse-drawn hoe. Nickleback ? Tears For Fears theres this ska band called Big D and the Kids Table a hardcore band called Boys Night Out and alot of irish or east-coast celtic bands have dumb named that usually include the fact that they are irish. like the Dubliners. The Irish Descendents. and so on... but god knows i love them! In new england, there's an ice cream cake named Cookie Puss. Um. Sorry, that's where your post sent my mind. :)
No just in New England, wherever there is a Carvel. Is anyone else here old enough to remember when Tom Carvel did the ads himself? He'd talk aobut Cookie Puss and Fudgie the Whale.
I believe you mentioned them a few posts up. 'Course, that was 6 months ago.

Replying to aargh! way up above: Well I'm doing fine, but I'm really curious as to who you are! If you sit behind th BJO sign you must be a sax player - yes? No? Tell me whom I am addressing! By the way, does anyone think Polyphonic Spree is a bad band name? I thought so when I first heard it, but I realize that it stuck in my head - so much so that I took notice every time I read a reference to them, or heard one of their songs. Ultimately it led to my buying their CDs - so it must be a really good name!
