What are your restroom standards?

Well...I do use the porta potties at Falcon Ridge, so my standards really can't be all too high.
Though I have to say that I do have standards for portapotties. I definitely prefer using them right after they have been cleaned and the stink trunk has moved far away.
With flush toilets in public restrooms, it depends on what's in and around the toilet (hopefully nothing) and compare other open stalls before I decide which one to sit on.
FRFF is a different story. I'm pretty particular but when you have to go you have to go. When I'm in the City and I have to go I usually look for a good hotel. In most neighborhoods I know the nearest acceptable bathroom. If I'm at Shea Stadium I do my best to wait till I get home.

So long as no direct contact is required, it's really not a big issue. If I need to, I can always hold my breath.
Otherwise, I'm pretty good so long as nothing is blatently obvious. The room doesn't need to be spotless, but I would at least like clear water. I'm sure you were all wondering too. Edit Erm, given the context, that subject is interesting. I should go back and edit it, but it's too good (or bad) to change ;-)

My standards are very high, but the standards of my bodily functions are not. In other words, when you gotta go, you gotta go, Ya know? I've used some truely horrible facilities in my time, because I had no choice, but giving a choice I prefer spotless.
Note, this doesn't apply to my OWN bathroom. I can tolerate a moderate amount of filth if it is mine. I imagine that is true of everyone. I think it is hardwiring. Why am I talking about this?
Because everyone knows it is fun to talk about the potty.
Come on AJ, join the potty.

As I'm sure I've blathered on about before, I work "on the road" all summer.
Sometimes I have absolutely no choice. I've been in places that mildly frightened me (and made me very glad I carry hand sanitizer). I've also been shocked at the high-"quality" of some truck stop/gas station bathrooms. And I once had to literally beg a woman at a carry-out type food place to use their employees only restroom, because I swear to god that entire half of that county had no gas stations or anything. *grumbles about how the guys tend to be able to just wander into cornfields*

here, so long as it's not someplace completely foul (like copious amounts of excrement on the seat) i'll use it.
here's my theory on women's toilets: women, for the most part, sit to pee. in public restrooms, they tend to squat. because they dont want to touch the seat. because there could be pee on it. BUT IF YOU SIT ON IT PROPERLY THERE WILL NOT BE PEE ON IT. SQUATTERS ARE THOSE WHO MAKE OTHERS SQUAT. thank you. my message has been heard. that being said, in japan, i'd use any toilet that wasn't a japanese toilet (warning: not work safe.) the first bhuddist temple i went to, mariko told me to ask bhudda for something - make a wish, basically. i wished that, wherever i went, there would be a western-style toilet. and everywhere we went? THERE WAS ONE! Bhudda provide!
Wow. That site amazed me. I would have thought the Japanese would be scrupulous about keeping clean restrooms. I guess no face is lost from a dirty john.
Also, WTF is up with the whole Eastern Hemisphere? Can't they just admit that Western toilets are infinitely superior and fucking convert? I swear to god, Greece, Spain, Morocco, I can't fucking believe people use those things, AND they are ALWAYS dirty. Jeez.
actually, our way is not superior. we were meant to squat. :P (this page explains why)
I'll buy one of those after YOU do Sheryl. ;)
Also the "historical background" on that site which claims that the sitting posture has only been used for 200 years is utter bullshit. It assumes that sitting is contemporaneous with the flush toilet, but for anyone who's ever seen an outhouse, this is obviously false. I've seen with my own eyes garderobes in european castles from the 13th century and Roman restrooms, both of which have quite obvious seats. Europeans have been sitting for a LOOOOOONG time.
wow.
i had heard of that before, but more generally--that site is cool... ... though the references at the bottom. well, one of the first ones is an unpublished article, and a number of the journals, well, i don't recognize them as peer-reviewed (though they may be) I'd like to read more on the one barium experiment. the trouble with the potential lack of peer reviewed stuff is that i know a good portion of it is probably because western medicine won't look into the issue :p

there is nothing quite like doing yer business in the great outdoors. if i'm camping or travelling and i need to go, and there's a relatively secluded nature-ish spot nearby, i'll go there.
for hygiene and courtesy to those around me, i use a toilet when in highly populated areas or at home, despite how tempting it is on nice summer evenings to go in the backyard. as soon as i can afford it, i intend to buy a Nature's Platform. squatting has always been more comfortable for me anyways.

i have no issues with doing my business in the great outdoors. i don't even mind outhouses (once i force myself to believe that there is no outhouse monster waiting down there)
but when it comes to "proper" facilities, i get pickier. i will use whatever i have to use, but i will also go out of my way to use bathrooms that i know are cleaner. on campus there are really only two bathrooms that i use with any regularity (one is supposed to be staff only--but no one in the linguistics department cares) and i hate perfumy bathrooms more than i hate smelly bathrooms. but that's because a perfumy/scented bathroom makes it hard to breath, or if it's really bad, will make me sneeze and my throat swell :p You must first create an account to post.
