Discussion: Do you think you have to be a Fruhead to frequent FHDC?
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 8 months ago

I submitted this poll because of some questions that came up this week during the archive argument. I'm just curious about the general feel.

Josh Woodward · 20 years, 8 months ago
As far as I'm concerned, everyone is welcome. Likeminded people, Fruheads or not, will tend to fit in well, and the trolls will eventually bubble out.

Remember, at first Fruvous was the reason, then they were an excuse, and now they're irrelevant.
Starfox Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
What do you have against trolls? Aside from the smell, bad teeth and general aggressive nature? I mean, trolls are people too, sorta.
Mark · 20 years, 8 months ago

I personally think if you dont have some knowledge of the band, you won't hang around for long. But if someone finds the site and gets involved then becomes a fan then the site is serving dual purposes.

Frankly though, I probably wouldn't be here unless I'd seen them live... their CDs are great, but nothing beat the show... or the people.

but this is fruhead.com. if just anyone shows up, joins, and participates, what's left to distinguish this from any other online community?
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
two of my dearest friends from college are on here. they are not fruheads and never have been. but they're very "Fruhead-like," whatever that means, and they joined to hang out with me and my FHDC friends. and i know a number of other fruheads can say that they have friends who've done the same. i don't have a problem with that at all.

my problem lies with people who are completely ignorant of fruvous/fruheads. not that it's Evil and Wrong to be unaware of an obscure canadian band on seemingly permanent hiatus, and the geeks who used to follow them around...like, hi. but if you aren't here because of the band, and you're not here because of fruhead friends, then i guess i don't understand why you'd join us here. to me, it's sort of like being illiterate or aliterate and joining chicklit. i mean, it's not like this is the only online community out there where people talk about music and pop culture and books and homestarrunner. um. is it?

I have only ever liked "Lazlo's Career"
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
and spiderman! don't forget spidey!
Alan Mendelsohn Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

I am so embarrassed that it's making my spider sense tingle!

BTW....When I worked at the Methodist church, I was meeting with the pastor concerning the upcoming Easter liturgy. She said to me, "Alleluia! Christ is risen!" and she looked at me expectantly for the response. As a Catholic, I was clueless. I said the first thing that came to mind: "He sure is!" Thank you spiderman! :P

Carey and I were always waiting for the right Fruvous show to take you too. When(yes not if) the hiatus ends you are going.

Not as funny as the time Steph and I tried to figure out how Fruvous could cover Kol Nidre service...

> if just anyone shows up, joins, and participates,

Why does it have to be distinguished from any other online community? For those of us who know each other and hang together in real life, or otherwise communicate with each other outside FHDC, it's more than "any other online community" for those reasons. But I don't see why we should be exclusive about who else can join or participate. If they like it and make friends here, fine -- it's served as a useful social tool both for them and for the people (probably mostly fruheads) that they've befriended, and as a bonus they'll hear about a wonderful, if obscure, band that's on hiatus and whose music is not likely to be consistently highlighted in any other community. If they don't like it or don't "get" it, they'll drift away after a little while because there's nothing here for them.

You elitiest, cliquish hate-monger! ;)

Hey, look at two of our newest members, Sarah and Des. As far as I know, they came here not knowing much at all about Fruvous or Fruheads, and now they've learned and (once again, as far as I know) are looking into them. This site simultaneously works as a gathering place for fans and a starting point for potential fans.
Sarah THE chicken Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Woohoo! I came to this site with very ulterior motives...some may call it stalking..(To each his/her own) And thank the almighty fru-god I did come, because now I've met some great people, and found a band that I truly do like. I don't know what I would do without the entertainment of this site!

So thanks for all those out there who don't care...

Sarah THE chicken Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Ok..I made that stalking comment jokingly before I had read all this about a real stalker..hehe I had no idea there was an acutal stalker, and I'm absolutely not stalking anybody...Just to clerify hehe *blush*

Read again, my friend. She said all the girls want to be nate's shoulders, not ON Nate's shoulders. In other words, all the girls want you on top of them. *cough*.

100% dainty! · 20 years, 8 months ago

Sometimes I think the definition of "Fruhead" is up for question too.

I started frequenting this site when I got *really* into Fruvous this Spring, without knowing anybody on FHDC, without having gone on fru-trips or chatting on The Wall or filling up my fru-card or going to Fru-con or just hanging out with fruheads for fun.

So. . . .did that make me an actual Fruhead or just a Fruvous fan? I sometimes get the impression that Fruhead refers to the huge circle of friends (and sub-circles of friends) that have met each other quite frequently at concerts and such.

100% dainty! · 20 years, 8 months ago
. . . .BUT I do not mean that Fruheads are clique-y. When I met y'all (or at least some of you) at FRFF, you were all very friendly and welcoming.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 8 months ago
Obviously you can't enforce the rule if it existed. What could you do? Have to take a test of Fruvousology every time you logged on? I also know there are people here, that are here because they are friends of Fruheads and of course are welcome. I don't like the idea of just random people joining, and I think it should be discouraged. That's all just discouraged unless they become trolls in which case they should be banned. The only person on FHDC I know that actually has been banned was a legitimate Fruhead who was also a stalker.

So I guess what I'm saying is I'd like this to be for Fruheads in principal that it is too hard to put into practice.
K-Lyn Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Really? someone got banned? wow!

I think that we make enough references to Fruvous without thinking about it that people are discouraged enough by that. If they are not they will learn what were are talking about, fall in love with the lads as we did, and thus become one of us. Which is great.

danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
Yeah. He was a stalker.
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
a creepy, persistent, and verbally abusive stalker at that. eww.
A.J. · 20 years, 8 months ago
Who the heck are we talking about? The only one like that I know is back on and hasn't been banned at all.
hkath Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
I'm confused as well. Not that it's nice to talk about others, but... help? I don't know what's going on.
100% dainty! · 20 years, 8 months ago

Wow! we had a stalker?? That's creepy! Was s/he stalking a specific fru-head, or a member of the band?

and what does trolling mean?

Sarah THE chicken Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
trolling= Patrolling...abbreviated..
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
erm...except...not. this is the kind of trolling we're talking about here.

and yes, there was a stalker who was banned for good. but i'd suggest that we move further discussion of that to frumsg.
Erica: movin' to Ohio!! · 20 years, 8 months ago
i don't see how it matters, considering hardly any time is devoted to fruvous discussion here anymore anyway.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 8 months ago

Yes, let's discuss your chest. :)

renita Back · 20 years, 8 months ago
heehee. that's gonna look funny once she changes her sn.

:D
jen · 20 years, 8 months ago

i agree, anyone can and should join, and the disinterested will peter out. there are a couple of my non-fruvous liking friends subscribed here from LONG ago and they dont come here at all anymore, then ask me what the hell the FHDC birthday email thing is all about :).

jen

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
The uninterested will peter out, the disinterested will be be unbiased :-)

Sorry it is a pet language peeve.
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
There's some debate on that one....

From Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry: disinterested
Pronunciation: -t&d
Function: adjective
Date: circa 1612
1 a : not having the mind or feelings engaged : not interested [telling them in a disinterested voice -- Tom Wicker] [Introverted. Unsocial ... Disinterested in women -- J. A. Brussel]
b : no longer interested [husband and wife become disinterested in each other -- T. I. Rubin]
2 : free from selfish motive or interest : UNBIASED [a disinterested decision] [disinterested intellectual curiosity is the lifeblood of real civilization -- G. M. Trevelyan]
synonym see INDIFFERENT
- disinterestedly adverb
usage Disinterested and uninterested have a tangled history. Uninterested orig. meant impartial, but this sense fell into disuse during the 18th century. About the same time the original sense of disinterested also disappeared, with uninterested developing a new sense--the present meaning--to take its place. The original sense of uninterested is still out of use, but the original sense of disinterested revived in the early 20th century. The revival has since been under frequent attack as an illiteracy and a blurring or loss of a useful distinction. Actual usage shows otherwise. Sense 2 of disinterested is still its most frequent sense, especially in edited prose; it shows no sign of vanishing. A careful writer may choose sense 1a of disinterested in preference to uninterested for emphasis [teaching the letters of the alphabet to her wiggling and supremely disinterested little daughter -- C. L. Sulzberger]. Further, disinterested has developed a sense (1b), perhaps influenced by sense 1 of the prefix dis-, that contrasts with uninterested [when I grow tired or disinterested in anything, I experience a disgust -- Jack London (letter, 1914)]. Still, use of senses 1a and 1b will incur the disapproval of some who may not fully appreciate the history of this word or the subtleties of its present use.
