Recommendations for curious listener

I've been hearing about the band, but haven't actually heard them.� I'm interested in hearing people's recommendations about which CD I should buy first, the one most likely to convince me that these guys are hot.

Uhmm... where to start.... good question.

My personal journey began with Wood.... odd place to start... but a great album.

Probably Live Noise would be a good spot... it's kind of a greatest hits of sorts. After that... decided which song you like the most from Live Noise, then buy those albums.

wow, you catch on faster than I do. The nearest I could figure was the "curious listener" was a band name ;-)

Anyways, "Wood" is my personal favorite, but I don't know about it as a starting point. I would say that "Live Noise" would be the best first album, just because of the length and variety of it. Granted, I usually like to get live albums as my first, since they're a step above greatest hits, and do say a good deal about the band.

Myself, I started with "You Will Go To The Moon" and that definitly worked to get me into the band.

and my first was live noise, for all the reasons mentioned here. what a great way to get into fruvous.

I started with YWGTTM, and thought it was pretty good, but not THAT great. It was only when I got Bargainville that I really got into the band. It was sort of a risky investment, considering that I thought YWGTTM was only okay, but one that really paid off. I loved it on my first listen.

I suppose Live Noise isn't a bad place to start, but I usually think it's a good idea to hear the studio versions of songs before the live ones. I know a lot of people disagree, but it makes sense to me.

Heh, that's exactly what i did. started with "Live Noise", loved it and got bargainville. what avtualy got me hooked though was an MP3 of "King of Spain", the "Bargainville" version.

Mmm.� Wood.� Yes.� Wood.� Wood.� Yep.

I started at the beginning, with bargainville.... I'd either go for that or Live Noise.

Both have a good variety of songs.

I started with them�live...never heard a note before my first concert�and I higly recomend that route. What's that you say? Hiatus??? Oh, very well.

Then I'd suggest Bargainville. I walked out of the concert and bought�Bargainville, Live Noise and You Will Go To The Moon.� I was sooooo hooked.

actually, come to think of it, what am i saying. my first fruvous experience was a live concert. but i surprisingly was not hooked. and i only remembered the drinking song. what's up with that? i didn't get hooked till this spring, and i'm still on a high.� i've turned my entire family onto them.

I had someone knock on my door before to find out what kick a** band I was listening to with Live Noise.

See I began with every single album on my MP3 player on my computer. and I listened to the songs constantly on shuffle. I didn't even know what songs were on what album until I actually went out and bought them.

Wood is my favorite, but it might not be the best thing to start with, because it doesn't have all the political stuff/acapella stuff/silly stuff.

I would start with Live Noise and Bargainville.� ooh, but you know what? B is also a great starter.� Definitely Bargainville though. It's got King of Spain, Gulf War Song, My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors, the Lazy Boy. . .yeah. Get Bargainville.

Then get everything else. on half.com. :)

My question is: How did you find out about the band?� If a friend introduced you, then they aren't a real friend unless they offer to loan you their copy of Live Noise.� If you "just heard about them somewhere," then start with Bargainville (the beginning) or B (the least expensive).� Both feature a quirkier version of Fruvous than the newer albums,� Wood is a great album, but not for setting the hook.� You have to grow into it.� You Will Go To The Moon is my favorite (which means I never loan it out).� I think it shows everything the band can do... it's not the best or worst, just the most encompassing.� Thornhill is another one you have to grow into.� It was on the new release display at my local Borders when I first heard Live Noise.� Listening to it too soon kept me from getting into the band for another year.

Maybe if we knew some other artists... are you more interested in their Cher, They Might Be Giants, or Journey aspects?� Knowing your listening habits would help us make more educated recommendations.

Dude, we had this down to a friggin science on the newsgroup... specific combinations and ordering of which albums to use for introduction and hooking depending on the personality of the... erm... recuit. It was scary.

I heard them on NPR, then got Live Noise, then saw them in SF, which made me go out and get YWGTTM and Bargainville, and look for FDC, which lead to FHDC, and eventually to Mollie. If I had first purchased Wood, which I now love, I might not have bothered to see them live...
