Best moment from Falcon Ridge 2003

Discussion: Best moment from Falcon Ridge 2003
John J. Ryan · 20 years, 11 months ago

Okay returnees from Falcon Ridge, it's time to reflect on the weekend. What was the bestpersonal moment of the festival? It could have been a performance or a non-performance related moment for you. This is going to be a hard question for most, including me.

Best moment? Irene Goodnight during Nields main stage. Arm & arm with friends just like the Drinking Song. What away to end a fantastic weekend.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Always a hard question but I'm going to say Thursday night dancing in the aisle to Richard Thompson with some of the best friends and best people in the world.
Drea Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Well, I didn't have any FRFF moments.. but I did have a Richard Thompson one! *G*

He played the Toronto Bluesfest on Sunday and absolutely *kicked* *ass* - had to dance sitting down due to all the people there (he wasn't on the main stage so it was somewhat more crowded). Only performer on the N.T.O. stage the entire weekend to get an encore (three songs!!), playing a total of an hour and a half :)

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
He always does encores, I've seen him do three and it took over an hour.

Doesn't Pete Zorn, the guy on the mandolin, guitar, and the family of saxes totally rock?
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Whoa whoa whoa....

ZORN is playing with him?!?!?!

Where?!?!?!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Everywhere, he's part of the tour. go to www.richardthompson-music.com for the schedule.
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Holy crapburgers!
Had I known that, I would have gone to see thompson this weekend.

Worth it for zorn!!!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
It is worth it for Richard Thompson, he's a Folk Rock Legend.

It was so much fun watching all the other performers watching him. Maura Kennedy was bouncing the whole time and Pete was totally transfixed except for when he'd turn to share the experience with Vance Gilbert who was also enraptured.
Erato Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

OMG, I so totally didn't know that about the other performers watching him

yes, richard is amazing.

nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Really? Never heard of him before this year.

He sounded alright from the camp.
Perhaps I'll check him out sometime.

Hell, if ZORN, of all people, was willing to play with him... he must be at least decent.
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Scratch this.
I thought he was talking about JOHN zorn.

I have no idea who this pete zorn character is.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
only a completely kickass guitar, mando, and sax player. that's all.
nate... Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Thas coo.

But he's no JOHN zorn.
:)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I love what Melissa said: "What did that mandolin ever do to him?" He was lucky it didn't catch fire.
k-rock Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
best moment? in general, being with so many friends - new and old and relishing every relaxing moment in the sun (and rain!). I don't think i could pinpoint one exact moment. good music + good friends = the best moments in my life.
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Greg Brown:
C - is the way to begin
H - is the second letter in
I - I am the third and
C - is the fourth letter in that word (That's the middle of the word)
K - just fillin' in
E - gettin' near the "N"
C - H - I - C - K - E - N that's the way you spell chicken.
John J. Ryan Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
That song is definitely going on my FRFF 2003 compilation. :)

absolutely had to be during vance gilbert's performance critique when he was talking about how folk singers don't get respect, and that exact moment the portapotty sucking truck started doing its noisy business in plain view right behind him at the family stage. what a riot. imho vance has always been the second funniest act at frff.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
if crossposting were possible on here, I'd also add this to the thread about performances that were extremely moving.

the Kennedys performance of "When I Go" on the mainstage on Thursday was absolutely amazing. it was so quiet in the crowd that you could have heard a pin drop on the grass.
Sally Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

The signing of Enormous Penis during the DVN workshop set.

Elsewise, watching dar and crying atop the hill during Iowa. Didn't get through the first chords without being reduced to the tears.

uhmmmm...waffles, stolen wristbands, stumbling upon lower camp and meetingbill, and mari counting up to 15...or trying to, at least :)

It's a girl! Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

 My favorite moments

 - Eric Schwartz at the dome-- especially the "kids songs"

 - Richard acknowledging his stalkers at the DVN mainstage show

 - singing myself hoarse at the Beatles workshop

 - laughing at the little boy running up and down the hill in his underwear during the Nields mainstage set

 - getting to have a more extended goodbye by going out to 4 Brothers with Neal and Carey on Sunday

zil Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
HEEEE!!! I saw the little kid running 'round nekkid... *sigh* kind of reminded me of my young life. ;-)
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
everything ellen and gordondon mentioned, and:
~eric's song for me and gordon ("that's what stalkers are for")
~"damn skippy!"
~performing aoll of "once more, with feeling" with john
~the chain of hugging cute girls on thursday night
~everyone being so sweet to me and taking such good care of me
~getting time to hang out with so many of my fave fruheads and musicians!
J. Andrew World Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

I think there were three moments I will tresure from this years Falcon Ridge

1) Kissing Ellen hello.

2) When Butch Ross joined Russell Wolff in the Budgie Dome

3) When I was mistaken for a member of DVN

Cold Mewwonade Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Mine would have to be when Donnie Wright screwed up a chord on the workshop stageduring Like the Ravenand yelling "shit" rather loudly.... Vance Gilbert's reaction was 10x better.... "Damn, they're rewriting Dave's songs already..... that's it, I'm naming my next album 'Raven Shit'"
Songbill Back · 19 years, 11 months ago
Hmmm... best moments...
--The general vibe of chilling out with nice folks in the Lower Camp common tent... so much so that going to see the music seemed almost inconsequential
--Eating filet mignon in the tent after the rainstorm on the first night
--Shelly coining the term "Shantytown" for our row of small tents
--Listening to AJ in the next tent over try to reason with his kids to pleeease go back to sleep
--Putting so many faces with names
--Ellen doing cool drawings
--Waffles
--Getting to know Karen, Andrea, Paul, Kat, and many others
--Meeting Sally on a lazy afternoon and having a great talk

There's a few... and I didn't even mention music!

the close of the 'stomp, drop and roll' *g* workshop when they sang 'you are my sunshine' and mike clem took his son, james, up on stage with him and held him on his hip thru the whole song and james sang along.

yes. it exceeded even the pete and maura and chris and meredith thompson all onstage together factor.

it was THAT cute!

this is a really hard choice...but i think it has to be when Tracy Grammer played "I go like the raven". it was absolute musical perfection. and meeting her afterwards...

also, helping Cadence lead "Evolve". *sigh*. happiness.

You did a great job, too!
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 11 months ago
For me it was not so much one moment but just all the times when the green downstairs pavilion was full of people sitting and laughing and talking.

Getting to meet Zil was a pretty awesome moment. She's so sweet and so beautiful.

And I picked up a crying baby and she stopped crying. This still amazes me. AJ and Lisa's little Melissa got me wanting a baby. Heee. :) I am so not used to kids and holding children terrifies me...I always think I'll do something wrong and break them. Our camp kids were awesome. :)

Zil, did I see you? I know I didn't meet you... did we maybe pass each other at some point and smile at each other and I thought "Damn she looks familiar..."?
zil Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I dunno.... I don't think I saw you. I was looking for you actually, really wanted to meet the gella. asked andrea where you might be fund, but allas I never found you. I saw a lot of people who seemed familiar... hippies always seem familiar and comfortable to me. part of the reason why 10,000 people didn't make me curl up and die.

zil Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

the best point for me was the people.

so much so that on the way there I realized that i hadn't even looked at who would be there for performers. cause it didn't really matter much to me....

I put off going to see people because I was sure I'd dissapoint and because of my delay I missed seeing Sara (and many dome people) and was pretty upset over that fact. I missed seeing josh play too. grr. people who mean loads to me and I didn't see them more because I'm an emotional cripple. I mean now I'm fine (relatively speaking *snort*) and I plan to find some way to camp next year instead of hotel-ing it... its just that first step.

I was a bit emotional when I went to lower camp... dah. with the exception of holding Bruce's hand on the way there I haven't recieved affection from anyone in MONTHS. and I had forgotten what being loved feels like... being safe.the first hug made me crumble, some because of the contact but mostly because I love andrea. "hi, nice to see you, can I put my face on your chest and cry?" yeah... actually... I don't let anyone hug me unless i love them, so you know who you are.

most of yuo I didn't say goodbye to, theres a reason. if you thought I cried when you met me it'd be nothing to the crying if I had to say goodbye. it was bad enough saying bye to Bruce and Teri, dude I was late to work for all the tears.

I didn't feel numb anymore.

but now I'm back in hell. without the hugs and the love first hand. I'm heartsick.

but atleast i know you're there and I know what it feels like.

I feel like I'm forgetting something....

OH YEAH! Sara, that'll show ya! don't shower or you'll miss me! but seriously, *pout*.

A girl named Becca Back · 20 years, 11 months ago

Aww...you didn't have to worry about disappointing anyone! We were all determined to love you already. ;)

Seriously, it was great to meet you. :) You should definitely camp(downstairs, of course)next year so we can see more of you!

*Hugs.

Just being there was special for me since it was my first time there. Sadly I didn't see a lot of the bands but it will be better next year since i've been planning for next year. But musicwise, the best moments were when you had all of the musicians there together on stage and one would lead and then everyone else joined in. That was just F-U-N. That gospel wake up call with EFO, DVN, The Kennedys, the neilds sisters and the other "unannounced" guests was just so completly moving for me. Anyone got a recording of that session? I would like to have a copy of that song. other things: driving back straight to st. louis was a hell lot of fun (2pm to 8am the next day....). not to mention all of the torrential rain storms we ran into. i must tell you that there are few sights as awe inspiring as seeing lightning light up the whole entire sky and you're the only one on the road. all right. can't wait to see you all next year....
Sara Woodward Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I had to leave before the gospel wake up call, had to work today and don't function well when I'm short on sleep. who were the "unannounced guests" so I can torture myself with the knowledge that I should have stayed?

I know it's a bit after the fact - I'm not good at picking favorite things. Even worse at justifying my decisions.

That said, one of my fave moments was during Groove, Stomp, 'n Shout, when EFO was singing "Hole Hearted" and Eddie stepped up to the mic to sing the chorus with Julie. EDDIE SINGING SOLO!!! I didn't even know that could happen.

And how about the on-stage Fruvous references:

Storm during DVN's mainstage set, singing the call and repeat part of Fishsticks - first he did a prettyoff tempoVanceGilbert thing, and thenbusts out with"Once I was the Kind of Spain... I know that was totally cheap."

Nerissa Nields (she's the blonde, right?) talking about nerds - I don't recall the context, during Groove, Stomp, and Shout - oh, I know - something about wanting to find the hot guy and the one who approaches you is the geeky Moxy Fruvous fan who asks if you've read the new Harry Potter, and you have, and then asks you who you preferred Jean Luc Picard or James T. Kirk... She was definitely taken aback when we nerds actually yelled back our Trek preference, and leaned back and said "they're answering!" to Maura Kennedy, I think.

Somebody yelling out "King of Spain" during Vance's mainstage set, and him saying that Falcon Ridge is a wonderful place where people don't look at your outside and judge you...so much so that they could mistake him for "5 white guys!" Which is ridiculous. We all know that Richard is Chinese...
