Songs with the same title

Discussion: Songs with the same title
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 11 months ago
The theme on WFUV today is songs by different artists with the same title. How many can we think of? I sent in Jerusalem. Using only artists the station plays I came up with this:
  1. Dan Bern
  2. Hugh Blumenfeld
  3. William Blake perhaps performed by Judy Collins
  4. Steve Earle
  5. Eddie from Ohio
  6. Don McLean
  7. Mirah
  8. Sinead O'Conner (written by Marty Clowes)
  9. Jimmy Webb

There's a ton for "Hallelujah" as well. Though there's only the One True Hallelujah in my book.
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
On an only-slightly-related note, I once made a mix CD with theme of songs by different artists whose titles respond to each other. The centerpiece, of course, was BNL's "Be My Yoko Ono" followed by Dar's "I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono," but I was surprised by how many combinations I came up with. I don't remember all of them at the moment.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I plotted out a mix a lot like that once but never got around to making it. :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Which one is that?
Josh Woodward Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
...
sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

try "Stay" - i once figured out like 15 artists that have a song called "Stay."

Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
heh...and I know of at LEAST three artists with albums called Play.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
And one "artist" had a TV show of that name. What was that guys name? Jean something?
meh Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" => Suzanne Vega's "I'll Never Be Your Maggie May"?
meh Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Doing twelve things at once, fell back asleep after my alarm, and somehow have to make this real-reply to the topic, 'cause it's fitting...

I know of at least two songs called Narcolepsy. :-)
Alex Ruben Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Are you saying that the definitive performance of Hallelujah is obvious?
Josh Woodward Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
No, since the One True Hallelujah has a bunch of versions, at least three of which are classics (Cohen, Buckley and Wainwright). But all other songs titled "Hallelujah" that don't begin with the link "I heard there was a secret chord" are just wannabes. :)
Alex Ruben Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Cheers to that.
Songbill Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
1. Fruvous
2. Bruce Springsteen
3. Elliot Smith
4. David Byrne
5. Vic Chesnutt
6. Ellis Paul
7. Ferron
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Isn't there one by Martina McBride or Faith Hill or whatever country chick? :)
Songbill Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Oh yeah, that was a big hit. Martina McBride.
Phoenix Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
10. Antje Duvekot (Will be on her new CD)
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
That wasn't on there, but certainly would've qualified! :)
Phoenix Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I'm still waiting for a Teddy Goldstein song called I won't be your Brad Pitt :D
Phoenix Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Terence Martin (on his first recording "Division Street")
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Hey, what about Handel's Hallelujah chorus? He was totally there first!
Josh Woodward Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
There are no bonus points for being there first. And his title has the word "Chorus" in it, anyway. :P
Josh Woodward Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Ani DiFranco, too, on "Little Plastic Castle".
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Now, the "Hallelujah Chorus: A Soulful Celebration," that is quality stuff.
Mamalissa! · 18 years, 11 months ago
How could you forget all the artists with songs called "Present Tense Tureen?" There have got to be at least thirty.
Songbill Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
There's Prince's for one.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

Dammit....REO Speedwagon's "Past Perfect Soup Bowl" is sooooo close.

derek harrison Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I love Rebecca Pidgeon!
Josh Woodward · 18 years, 11 months ago
There are a lot of "California" songs. Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Foucault, Joni Mitchell and Josh Ritter just off the top of my head. Add in variations and you have millions. :)
Songbill Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

Jerrilyh Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

Don Henley - New York Minute

Nas - N.Y. State of Mind

Interpol - NYC

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Those aren't exactly the same title though.

Is the Interpol song actually "NYC" or "New York City" There are songs by both titles

NYC is from Annie and "New York City" by the Cubs and covered by TMBG.
Jerrilyh Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Yeah the Interpol song is "NYC."
Rimbo Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Ryan Adams' "New York, New York," off of Gold.
Bruce Rose · 18 years, 11 months ago

The Cubs are a baseball team. The band is simply called cub (and apparently they preferred to not capitalise the 'c')

Huh.
I never realized that wasn't a TMBG original.
Interesting.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I thought I might not have the name exactly right but I figured you'd correct me if I was wrong. I was right about that :-)
Bruce Rose Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

renita Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
they were from vancouver :) and totally awesome.

they had songs about how great a pet chinchilla was (satan sucks, but you're the best), going on a picnic (you bring me carrots and celery) and other cool things.

it's very happy music!
sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
haha, pet chinchillas are great if you're a fan of dusting your entire place once a day :D
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 18 years, 11 months ago
This is Me by EFO
This is Me by Girlyman
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 18 years, 11 months ago
What about Album titles? The only one that pops instantly to my head is Play by Great Big Sea and The Nields (which, btw, confuses my iTunes).
lawrence Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
yup, those confuse my iPod. if I shuffle by albums, it'll actually intersperse the tracks from the two albums. same with GBS's and R.E.M.'s Up.

you'd think it would be an easy problem to solve, too, they just ... haven't.
sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
yeah you think album title wouldnt be a key they search on, you know? maybe albumid.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Evolver by The Mammals and the Kennedys.
Rimbo Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Moby has a Play, too.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
And Squeeze. I have GBS, Squeeze, and Nields and my CD database used to get mighty confused.
Phoenix Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Hee I can imagine. I only have that Squeeze album so no confusion ;D
