Beautiful in a strange way.

I was just listening to Tom Waits' singing Jersey Girl. Tom's voice sounds like he gargled with lye yet the song comes out as beautiful as a song can be. It always moves me to tears. What else do you know that is beautiful despite not fitting our usual notions of beauty?

In the film Kissing Jessica Stein, they have a conversation about men who are "sexy ugly." For example, Willem Dafoe or Harvey Keitel--not quite meeting our societal standards for good looking, yet still possessing a certain somethin-somethin.

What I love about the "sexy ugly" thing is how I'd never heard of it before the movie but when they described it during the movie I *immediately* got it and could give my own examples. For me that is good evidence of a real, valid category.

It's hard for me because my tastes seem to half run counter to the general accepted beauty standards. (moreso in men than women) So it's hard for me to always decide who is sexy-ugly because someone who's sexy-ugly to others is either sexy-sexy or ugly-ugly to me. :)

There needs to be a sexy-geeky. Because that's easier for me to see. Like I think Gene WIlder was hella sexy. But not in the "traditional" way. But also not ugly, so not sexy-ugly.

I'm totally going to see Gene Wilder speak next Tuesday.

YES! It's been bothering me for years (well, maybe one and a half, since the movie hasn't been out that long).

Not really on topic, but I'm seeing Dave's True Story tonight. They had several songs on teh KJS soundtrack, including the one played during the kiss. When Dave Cantor, the songwriter, saw that he said, "I can die now."

Once again, I have a hard time not making fun of Jian.� I'm not sure if he's beautiful in a strange way, or strange in a beautiful way.��

I'm somewhat inclined to believe he's just strange in a strange way.

nope. i'm just someone who has seen almost every old episode of the simpsons, and whose best friend is obsessed with the simpsons, owning seasons 1-5 and quoting them every chance he gets.

plus, i like that episode. moe's cool looking before his face gets smashed in. ;)
