Title please...I have a friend who fell in love with a video of hers and has been trying to find the song. I think it was called Always and the album Something Beautiful which confused me since I'm such a Great Big Sea fan.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I believe the song is Almost. And I think the album is All of Our Names. I have it spinning in my car a lot but rarely have the case around and I'm too lazy to look it up right now. :)
zil Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
two perchased at the same exact-a-minute. modest mouse- good news for people who like bad news and ben harper- live from mars (ben harper selection is a re-buy because the ex sold my first copy... oooooevilboy.)
Snow In Summer Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Morrissey's "You Are the Quarry" I'm a Smiths fan from way back & this is perhapsthe closest I"ll ever get to a new Smiths album. it's that good, if you like that sorta thing.
Nathan Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I bought the newest Magnetic Fields album, I, the other day, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.
Rimbo · 20 years, 9 months ago
Well, invisa-Zil, let's see . . . I think . . . yeah, it was Ben Folds' Speed Graphic EP.
zil Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
yeah, me=invisa-ble. I'm in a weird invisa-mood lately.
angelmusicmaven · 20 years, 9 months ago
I think my most recent purchase was Ron Sexsmith's latest. It's yummy. Actually... I think the new Down the Line EP was even a little more recent than that, perhaps. Ah well, they're both very nice... *lying in wait for Andy Stochansky CD to come out*

Patty Griffin-Impossible Dream.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Melissa is the shit. I truly believe she can write love and heartbreak like nobody else.
zil Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

James Darren, This One's From the Heart.

That's James Darren as in "The guy who played Vic Fontaine in the last season and a half of 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'."

Thea Gilmore, "Avalanche" (Compass, 2003).

Run, don't walk, to buy this CD.

"Have you heard that you're a liar
Have you heard the music died
Have you heard that the messiah
Went and joined the other side...."

(Okay, it's not all depressing stuff, that lyric's just the latest one I've caught that really impressed me)
Phoenix · 20 years, 9 months ago
this was one cdbaby order:

Kym Tuvim - On the mend (not a '04 release but fabulous. A folkie friend pointed me in her direction)
Brian Webb - live (with a Patty G and Leonard Cohen cover but Tobias - a song about a crack head - is my current favourite; even if it breaks my heart on every listen)

Oh so much happiness!
Bender Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I'm of the opinion that it's impossible to properly cover a Leonard Cohen tune. I mean, it's possible to do it aesthetically well, Rufus and "Hallelujah" for example, but you just can't capture that... soul that Leonard gives. The essence. The grit and the... the... lack of words, hi.
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
dwwd. The Heino pic totally cracks me up!
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
See, I'm the exact opposite. Leonard's songs are absolutely wicked beautiful. But I just can't stand hearing him sing them. Something about his voice, and the cheesy style he gives them. It takes another performer to liberate his songs. :) His really early stuff was ok, but anything past the first couple albums makes me cringe.

And before you ask, I adore the voices of the likes of Tom Waits, Greg Brown, etc. :)
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yeah, I agree completely.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Hehe and I've not heart Leonard Cohen much but I happen to feel exactly this way about Tom Waits, Greg Brown, and Bob Dylan. :)
Bender Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Listen to a young Leonard Cohen singing The Story of Isaac. The album?Songs From A Room . Then report back. That's homework, young man :)

Actually, Bird on a Wire, From the same album, would work too, but the first one I mentioned is a song very close to my heart... I learned it when I was seven. Yay for musician dads.

If you disagree, cool! (But I'm right ;P)

Then listen to Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and write an essay comparing and contrasting their use of the same biblical story.
J. Andrew World · 20 years, 9 months ago
Dude, she is like all famous now. It's kinda cool, last june I saw her open for Erin McKeown at the Iron Horse and now she has been featured on NPR and VH1.
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yup. Nellie is said to have a great management. And she's opening for Sting on his upcoming European tour. Go fig.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I've been telling people to go see her before she gets big. She was playing places in New York with no cover before this last tour. I've never seen her when I was more than 10 feet from her. Now I might never get that close again.
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
> I was more than 10 feet from her. Now I might never get that close again.

Not unless they modify the restraining order, no.. ;-)

Costello's "Blood and Chocolate"

AMAZING album.
It'd been so long since I lost my first copy.

Kris 'engaged' Bedient · 20 years, 9 months ago
Friend made me a collection of a live version of all the songs from their albums, plus all of their covers. It fills 3 CDs *sigh*
Kat Kunz · 20 years, 9 months ago
franz ferdinand, s/t. and let me tell you, 9 out of 10 music critics aren't wrong--it's all kinds of fun.
Adam Hartfield · 20 years, 9 months ago

A 10-LP set on Command Records called "Command Performances." I can't wait to get its cheesy goodness!

Paul · 20 years, 9 months ago
Ashley Hutchings and The Albion Band (a compilation cd) some live some studio excellent music
Bruce Rose · 20 years, 9 months ago
Three at once. I found a decent used cd store and went a little crazy. When I'd finished culling my selections, I had these three:
1. BoDeans - Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams
2. Ani DiFranco - Little Plactic Castle
3. Chicago soundtrack

Tomorrow, I should go back for the ones I put on hold. They're obscure enough that they should still be there. :-)
zil Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
wheee! little plastic castle rulez! ... adam took my copy. I think he took almost all of my favorites.

Mike Ford - Stars Shone on Toronto

Has been on permanent repeat since I got it. Damn, he's good. It's a wonderful recording, but not nearly long enough *g*
Brian Dinsky · 20 years, 9 months ago

Robert Randolph and The Family Band - Unclassified

really good group. i'm not sure how to classify them. they sound sorta gospel church rock bandish. great slide guitar, at that. i really really like their sound.

Erato Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Oh, they're wonderful! (The Robert Randolph Band, that is). I saw them last year at Singer-Songwriter weekend. So, so, so much fun.

Talcott · 20 years, 9 months ago
Indestructable Object - TMBG, which I really like a lot. It feels like a good blend of their older and newer stuff.

zil Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I dunno you may not be awake. as we speak talcott is "enjoying" The Day After Tomorrow for free with free popcorn and SODA (yes soda you durn pop peoples) while the invisa-zil works. beatch.
Prinut Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

British Sea Power - The Decline of the British Sea Power
Gorillaz - Space Monkey vs. Gorillaz: Laika Come Home

the first is interesting...growing on me
i haven't listened to the second one enough to make my mind up....but they were both cheap :-)
Queen Lisa of Darlington · 20 years, 9 months ago
Just bought Nelly McKay AND the new Glenn Tilbrook (ex-Squeeze) solo CD from Amazon so I guess that's a tie for new CDs purchased ... (turned on to both of them by, no surprise here, listening to WXPN on two road trips north in the last few weeks). Also, re: "Blood and Chocolate," while that's not my favorite Elvis Costello album per se, it does have the distinction of having one of my top three of his songs on it, "Blue Chair" (and because I KNOW you all want to know, the other two are "Party Girl" off "Armed Forces" and "God Give Me Strength," from the Burt Bacharach CD). Now that I know the Fordy CD is available, excuse me while I trot on over to MapleMusic.
