Along the lines of the songs that reference NYC post. I'm going to have a 10 hour drive to Stillwater, Oklahoma this summer, and it occurs to me that I should make the mix while I'm still at school with fast internet and a cd burner. So any suggestions? Really all I have now is Oklahoma! (from the musical) and Oklahoma Hills by Woody Guthrie. Any more? -Joy
[deleted because i'm too stupid to talk.]
Stupid American - EFO
Also it'd be awesome if you could find the Sesame Street Forgetful Jones version of the musical song:
Eeeeeeeeeeeeklahoma! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaklahoma! et cetera
heeeeee! totally. forgetful jones rocks.

"cold missouri waters," either the cry cry cry or the james keelaghan version
er....? are you sure you don't mean "Shades of Grey" by Robert Earl Keen, covered by Cry Cry Cry?
"highway 80," dave and tracy, and probably some more dave and tracy, too.
does "highway 80" mention Oklahoma?
(sorry. you know I like to nitpick :)
i haven't listened to cry3 in years, i don't have it with me, and i'm running on very little sleep. but you know what i meant. so i'll just bash my head against the wall until it bleeds, thanks.
and yes, actually, "highway 80" mentions oklahoma. "but i'm an oklahoma boy and i'm east coast bound/got a redneck woman in a blueblood town/and i'm goin back to see my baby just one more time." next time, try checking out the lyrics, which are all available at daveandtracy.com.
"but i'm an oklahoma boy and i'm east coast bound/got a redneck woman in a blueblood town/and i'm goin back to see my baby just one more time."
ahhhhh, yeah. I forgot about that line. I was thinking only of the driving part, which doesn't go through Oklahoma. :)
J.J Cale - If you're ever in Oklahoma (such a positive and optimistic song ;-)
And you should check out DonCon aka Don Conoscenti who is from Oklahoma and rocks the Casbah.
well, considering some of the tenuous nyc connections in the songs mentioned over in that thread, i thought it would be ok to mention over here.
i thought it would be ok to mention over here.
of course. I just totally forgot about that line. it makes sense now.
also:
i thought it would be ok to mention over here.
isn't this whole thread about ok? :)

Also, The Alto's Lament makes fun of the song Oklahoma.
I just found that song. It is -fantastic-
Is Oklahoma in Stupid American? *blink* oh, I love forgetful jones!! I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for that. But still.
Is Oklahoma in Stupid American? *blink*
sort of. it's in the printed lyrics, anyway.
"my heart is ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooklahoma."
it took me forever to notice the "klahoma" part in the song. it's there, it just goes by very fast.

Isn't there a Kinks song about OK? Like, Oklahoma, USA?
really? it's one of the first things I noticed about the song, and thought it was awesome.
Besides, with the number of states EFO mentions in their songs, I'd be surprised if they hadn't hit Oklahoma yet.

same here. a great robbie line. but aren't they all? :)

He's got a bunch of songs that reference Oklahoma, including "Oklahoma" (duh). The other one where the reference is pretty major is "Bobby Feller". Plus there's "Graceland" and "Annie Beasley", which both mention Okemah, but are based elsewhere. I'll probably think of more :)
Route 66 is the perfect song for your trip though you are taking it backwards.
Guster- "Ramona"
o/~ Ramona, you're miss Oklahoma o/~
Billy Gillman- "Oklahoma"
o/~ Son, we think we found your dad in Oklahoma o/~
Bob Schnieder- "Oklahoma"
o/~ she came from Oklahoma, she said the end of the world was on its way in a Chevy Nova o/~
Jimmy Webb- "Oklahoma Nights"
o/~ Oklahoma nights i will never forget you o/~
Vince Gill- "Oklahoma Borderline"
o/~ those Oklahoma city girls, they always treat you right o/~
Steve Earl- "Billy Austin"
o/~ i was born in Oklahoma, quarter Cherokee i'm told o/~
Woody Guthrie- "Pretty Boy Floyd"
o/~ every crime in Oklahoma was added to his name o/~
Tom Waits- "Swordfishtrombones"
o/~ he got 20 years for loving her from some Oklahoma governor o/~
Steve Earle- "Leroy's Dustbowl Blues"
o/~ Leroy was a farmer and an honest man, would have lived in Oklahoma all his days o/~
that's all i can come up with for now :)
I think Merle Haggard referenced Oklahoma a lot. Okie from Muskogee has already been mentioned, and I'm blocking the others. The only two I can come up with are:
Tulsa Time by (I don't remember)
You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma - David Frizzell & Shelley West
The All-American Rejects are from Stillwater, OK, but I don't think they've mentioned that in their songs.
and yes, actually, "highway 80" mentions oklahoma
another one on the same album that is about oklahoma but doesn't actually use the word "Oklahoma" is Tillman County.
good call. i was going to mention that, too, but since i was on so much crack yesterday, i was worried about getting something *else* wrong.
I'm confused, darlin'... do the songs HAFTA mention going TO OKlahoma? Or just mention it at all? and... 10 hrs? What about your average roadtrippin' songs? No? What about "I'm leaving NY" songs?
Am I ruining your life? :D
Pretty much any song on Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads is about Oklahoma.
Dust bowl blues
talking dust bowl blues
Tom Joad
Pretty Boy Floyd
then segue into Springsteen. He did a great version of Pretty Boy Floyd and his album Ghost of Tom Joad.
