singin' the blues

i'm working on a weird little project involving me, a laundryroom, a microphone, recording software, a guitar, a banjo, possibly a doumbek, and a whole lot of warblin'. it'll be kind of like Redbird on sedatives. so i'm quite curious... what is everyone's favourite bluegrass/traditional song?

I've always been partial to "Rocky Top"... or, I was until I saw the Tennessee womens basketball team in the championships for three straight years.� Since their band only knows "Rocky Top" and "Rock And Roll Part 2," it got to be like nails on a chalkboard.

Townes Van Zandt has loads of cool stuff. "To Live is to Fly" is killer, "Poncho & Lefty", "White Freightliner", "Waiting Around To Die", far too many others to name.

My favorite trad song is Wildwood Flower. I have tons of different versions and I can even sort of strum it on my autoharp. :)

(It sounds a bit better on there than the Nields tunes I can play on it....)

You said bluegrass or traditional but the thread is named for the blues. So here are my two favorites. St. James Infirmary aka Gambler's Blues and House of the rising sun.

Not at all traditional but have you fiddled out the chords to Antje's merry go round yet? You should really play it at some point and it would make me happy...

Mama You Been On My Mind, version by Dylan and Baez, if that counts as traidtional fonl or bluegrass, I'm not sure.

ok....so, yah, i grew up in the farm country of central PA.....where the country/bluegrass music is aplenty.... there's a song that lotsa leeeetle country bands we'd go to see used to sing and has been around for EONS called 'mountain dew'. i feel that little jimmy dickens recorded a version of it, but could be any other classic grand old opry-type.

also 'the orange blossom special' is another classic one.

i also like 'i never picked cotton' by roy clark{though dunno if i'd say it was a -classic- bluegrassy song}

i'm sure i could think of some others, but then i'd get MORE 'southern belle/country girl' pickin' from y'all. ;)

it's not "the real old mountain dew," is it? that's a trad irish song.

Can we open this up to country artists and songs as well?� I think that a lot of the old drinkin' songs would sound great in a bluegrass arrangement.� I'm specifically thinking of Merle Haggard (Rainbow Stew and Red Bandana come to mind immediately,)�but George Jones may fit as well.
