not just the usual suspects

I'd like to know what other Fruheads are listening to -- besides Fruvous *and*
besides the usual suspects (TMBG, Dar, Nields, EFO...you know...). We've got very
diverse tastes around here, and I'm curious to know what else people are into
right now.

I think quite a few people hear already know about him, but if you don't know Peter Mulvey give him a listen. Also Nick Drake

It'd take me eons to actually list out the music I regularly listen to, but lately I've been getting into.. Travis (dense post-Radiohead brit-pop, thanks Kat!), The Strokes (neo-70's NYC punk crossed with Cake), Wilco (rootsy rock), and The Old '97s (alt.country, very fun stuff). Oh, and here's to Peter Mulvey *raises glass* :-)

I think I screwed up my last post. Lets try again. Deni Bonet is great. She plays a Rockin' violin and has fun lyrics. Of course there are my usual suspects, Christine Lavin, DVN, and Slaid Cleaves.

Lately I've been really into Elliott Smith. I think he's really brilliant, I mean, really quite amazing. I feel like his music is in my blood...I know that sounds ridiculous, but I only mean it as a measure of how amazing he is. I kind of want him to be wildly popular (as he deserves) and I kind of want to keep him to myself. Although he does have a fairly wide fan base. He sounds kind of Beatley, but that doesn't sufficiently describe his amazingness. He writes these beautiful little harmonies with great lyrics. I strongly recommend him. I think he's working on an album now.

Elliot Smith is most definately brilliant.. I got into his stuff about a year ago. I love his lyrics. I definately understand how you feel about the whole popular/unpopular thing. I want him to get all the recognition and rewards he deserves for his amazing work but I don't want preppy bimbos listening to him just because he would be the next big thing.

I see this forum getting huge... and I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm another person with widely varied tastes and the recommendations to prove it. Lately, I find myself listening to a lot of Kasey Chambers (Australian country- folk singer-songwriter... imagine Gillian Welch with more attitude and a pierced nostril) and Robbie Fulks (alt-country hillbilly GOD). To balance the recent upswing in twang music, I'm also digging back to listen to the Clash and the rest of my old punk collection.
Not that any of the usual suspects ever leave my player for long.

Let's see...I tend to do a little bit of everything (I used to say that when it wasn't true...then I met my freshman-year roommate, who actually did listen to a little bit of everything, and who exposed me to the genres I was missing.). Some of my favorites, though, are Dispatch, Gin Blossoms (whom you may remember from "Anywhere you go, I'll follllllow you down..."), Goo Goo Dolls (might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they are really talented, and I'd recommend giving them a shot), Lisa Loeb (sort of folky, I know, but not usually included in the folk scene...), October/November Project, New Found Glory, No Doubt (occasionally, and mainly for nostalgia value...they were my first concert), and a variety of one- hit wonders whom I use on mix CDs (this includes 80's pop, boy bands, techno, hip-hop, mild punk stuff, etc.). Sorry, I didn't expect this post to get so long! :)

October/November Project,

Is this different than October Project? Is there a November Project? or is it just called October/November Project, having nothing to do with the dis-banded band October Project?

November Project is the successor band to October Project.

Right now I'm loving Dan Bern's last CD. "God Said No", Alaska Highway", "Tape"... great stuff. I also can't go a day without listening to David Francey's Juno award winning CD, The Far End of Summer. With Mike and Dave on "Banks of the Seaway. *grin* That's my entry for Six Degrees of Moxy Fruvous.

I forgot to mention Dan. I see him whenver he plays here. Alaska Highway is a great album. He never recorded my favorite song of his. I think it's called Hey God. It's hte one where god tells him about the commandment "thou Shalt not be mean to a moose"

I think the "official" title of that song was "Lightning Jazz". I have a couple of recordings of it from the Bottom Line shows with Fruvous and I also have the really wild one from Smith College where he didn't feel the audience was getting into his show enough and he just went nuts on the song. It's awesome. :)

personally, ive also dug out my old 97's cd, fight songs. it's almost fall, and it takes me back. im also listening to josh rouse, phantom planet (the band the guy from rushmore is in), the new coldplay, howie day, and wayne (an alt-countryish band from alabama).

I'm quite fond of Talvin Singh, Infected Mushroom, Tabla Beat Science, and William Orbit. I don't think those are "usual suspects"

I'd have to agree with Dan Bern and Kasey Chambers who were mentioned - both incredible, I must say. Of course I've been listening a lot to Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and the separate players in the band (Tom Wilson, Colin Linden, Willie P. Bennett...and yeah, Stephen). Tom's a psycho, Colin is an amazing blues guitarist and Willie P. is just a legend so what can ya say? :) The Supers and Starling deserve mentioning here as do Andy Stochansky, Ron Sexsmith, Andy White and (for a change of pace)K-OS who has this awesome hip-hop/world/R&B kinda fusion thing going on.

well, i've been on a weird grunger streak for the past, oh, 6 months or so (blame it on various underage boys *cough*). :D so i've gotten back into the foo fighters, counting crows, ash, nirvana, bowling for soup�etc. new faves are smashing pumpkins (thanks to a certain hobbit), weezer, queens of the stone age, RHCP, coldplay, the strokes, system of a down... and the list goes on. (oh, and HEDWIG!! omg.)

of course the bulk of my cd collection is made up of fruvous and fru-related bands (DVN, arrogant worms, russell wolff, EFO, plus the obligatory beatles albums and BNL who are, apart from fruvous, my favourite band of all time), but i'm also totally into CSNY, james taylor, paul simon, that kinda thing.�random other stuff, though: billy joel, justin timberlake, various�movie soundtracks (amelie, jurassic park and o brother where art thou being among my favourites), michael jackson, mr bungle, frank sinatra, al green, and i'm hoping to acquire some hanson from somewhere. :D

Jellyfish/Jason Falkner

I didn't realize he was in Jellyfish and the Grays (Greys? I can't spell), both of which I love! Weird when stuff dovetails like that.

Jason's so great! (and soooo fiiiiine) he has also toured as bassist or guitarist for a crapload of bands including Beck and Air... he should have something new coming out soon with Roger Manning from J'fish.� Andy Sturmer from J'fish just finished up producing a new record for a Japanese pop group called Puffy Amiyumi.� For any big Jellyfish fans out there, I'd recommend checking out Ebay or Not Lame Records to get their box set... 4 CDs of a band that just put out two?� Weird, but there are cool demos and some unbelievable live stuff.

I've been listening to Royal City, they're a local country-folk band. Very gritty. I mean, most of their songs have at least two mentions of bodily fluids kind of gritty. They're awesome.

I've also (of course) been listening to Dan Bern's newest CD "Fleeting Days", which is three CDs later than the one Lisa posted about earlier in this thread. I know some people have a dislike for Dan, but I can't possibly imagine anyone hearing this CD and not liking him :D

And of course, Ben Folds, Joe Jackson, Sharon Lois & Bram, TMBG, Les Colocs, old Beau Dommage albums, Danny Michel (*explodes in anticipation*), Andy Stochansky, Sleater Kinney, Guster, Simple Minds, Susan Werner, Guster, Crowded House, Cake, Badly Drawn Boy, Rufus Wainwright, The Nields sisters, Vance Gilbert, John Mayer, anything by the Muppets, and you'd probably have to throw in Dashboard Confessional, even though I'm quite ashamed of that one. :)

Did anyone find anyone good at the emerging artist showcase? That's how I found Girlyman this year. I already knew WA9. I found Zoe Lewis there in 2001.

I didn't see much of it but I heard George Wurzbach who I already knew. He's in Modern Man a group that is as funny as DVN, great praise indeed.

george wurzbach was really the only one i saw and enjoyed...but like gordon said, i already knew his stuff.

and girlyman and wa9 were in the emerging artist showcase *last* year. they and rachael davis were the *most wanted* artists of 2002, and appeared in this year's *most wanted* song swap. but everybody except gordon already had that straight. :)

the general consensus seemed to be that this was an off year for the showcase, but i'd love to know if anyone had a different experience. mmm...new music.

OK how sad is this. I of course knew what year girlyman and WA9 were there and originally said "last year." I then felt it was less confusing to write about Zoe by saying the year and was going to do the same thing for WA9 but instead changed "last" to "this." I need help.

The White Stripes are one of my faves lately, although I've been transferring files to an MP3 player so i've been listening to a little bit of everything - lot's of 80's stuff.
