Have you ever been on jury?

I got called for grand jury the first week of my last semester of college. When they were going around the room asking if any of us might have a reason why we could not do it, I rose my hand, and the woman who was interviewing us just looked at me, asked "student?" and when I wound up as being a (never used) sub.
If I were in a situation where I could afford to take the time, I would like to do it some day (I'm too curious about seeing things first hand), but seeing as the grand jury met on one of the three days a week I had class, right when all of my classes were, it wasn't much of an option.

Well, I've been to jury duty twice but was never picked. The first time, they let me go after the second day. The second time, it was a civil case that was settled during the jury selection and I was dismissed after one day. I still don't think I would have been picked cause I'm a pesky social worker and all. :)

I was on jury duty once...it was an attempted murder trial. The guy was acquitted because there weren't any witnesses. It took about four days.

I got called once when I was in college... but got out of it by officially moving to VT.
Now I just got called again, and I'm actually going. It's the end of this month...so... we shall see how it goes. Everyone I know has just gotten dismissed. Out of all my friends who have gotten called, and showed up, not a one actually had to serve.

In Rochester NY back in 1995 I think (right around the time O.J. was big in the news)...it was one of the most interesting processes I ever took part in.

I used to get called for jury duty every three years. I only got to voir dire once and I wasn't picked. I'm not actually sure I was rejected as they got to 14 jurors (two alternates) before they got to me.
I did do grand jury once, it was every other day for four weeks. That was sort of fun as you see a cross section of all the types of criminal proceedings. Lots of drug cases, some assualts, weapons possesion, and one child sexual assualt. That was the first time I heard the term "special victims."

I've ALMOST been on a jury in that I was an alternate. I had to sit through the whole trial as if I were a juror but then me and another guy didn't get to deliberate. We had to sit in a room by ourselves while the others deliberated. You don't find out who the alternates are until after the trial natch.
The thing that is interesting is that they convicted the guy, and if I'd been on the jury I don't think that would have happened. Hmmm;
According to something I hear every now and then on CourtTV, when interviewing alternate jurors, they almost always disagree with the verdict. I guess that's what happens when you don't get to participate in the deliberations.

I was on a 2-day criminal trial back in December of 1992. Loved it; it was fascinating. I was disappointed this year when I got called, went, but the court's A/C system was broken so the judge dismissed us all at 9 a.m.

Sigh. I was called for jury duty. But then I had to move very suddenly and I completely forgot to go. So now I'm just hoping nobody kills me.
You should call. I know in MA they can put out a warrant for your arrest if you don't show with no explanation.
I'm afraid to call. And it's been like 2 months now. Sigh. I'll carry a picket, but I'm having trouble coming up with a chant.

Never-ever been called for jury duty. It also helps that I'm not eligible yet... Youth has its good parts!

I've been summoned twice to 26th and California, the sweet spot of Chicago. Both times I participated in voir dire -- I think nearly everybody called for criminal court petit jury service in Chicago ends up in voir dire because of the sheer volume of cases. First time was a murder trial, and I wasn't picked, probably because I volunteered that a friend of mine was murdered when I was in high school. (Which was true.) Second time was a very small-time burglary charge, and I was picked as a regular juror.
True to form, I actually overslept the next morning and woke up about 10 minutes before the case and 10 miles from the courthouse. In a total panic, I somehow found the presence of mind to call the number on my summons and let them know I'd overslept. They wanted me there anyhow, so I took the quickest shower ever and hailed a cab whose driver was probably quite sorry he stopped when he heard where I was making him go. I made it there only 25 minutes late -- amazing for the distance -- but the rest of the jury was _not_ pleased. Because of the advance notice, the judge was able to take care of other stuff in the meantime, so at least the court wasn't all that upset at me. After all the runaround, it turned out to be a pretty open-and-shut conviction -- 3 hours of trial, 25 minutes of deliberation, and 3 secret-ballot polls before we got to "guilty."

To become eligible for jury duty in Australia the government, I can't recall if it was state or federal, sends out a questionaire.
One question was: "Have you ever lost your driver's license for 12 months, or more?" "Surely," I thought, "there must be records the government keeps." I ticked "Yes," to see what will eventuate. Result? Nothing. I haven't heard of jury duty since filling out that questionnaire about a quarter century ago. Do I feel bad about it? No. My opinions and attitudes are so excentric, the selectors would never pick me anyway. My answer just obviated the need of them wasting their time considering me as a juror.

The case got settled before the trial really began. Someone asked for a recess after the judge's instructions to us (just before were were supposed to hear the opening statements from the lawyers), and about a half hour later, we were told it got settled. Heh. Shortest jury duty I ever did. The other times, I had to be there for three to five days (without being selected) before they let me go.
