Poll: How do you feel about the Israel/Palestine separation wall?

Israel has a right to defend its existence and protect its borders.

The whole problem with the Palestinian/Israel peace initiative is that the Palestinian leadership just will not accept the existence of Israel, I mean, hell it's in the PLO's charter to see Israel "pushed into the sea". You can't have peace if one side doesn't want the other to exist.

So yah, in the meantime, Israel has the right to take whatever measures are necessary to protect its citizens from attack.

First off you used biased language in the questions. The Israelis call it a fence, the Palestinians a Wall. The use of language in this situation is highly charged.

Now as for the fence. I think it started as a hoped for panacea by the Israeli left. They thought they could end the terror by putting up a physical separation at the pre-1967 borders. If built there I don't know if it would have been effective but it wouldn't cause as much harm as the current divider. When the likud took over the idea they changed it to protect israeli settlements in the west bank. That meant building it on Palestinian land and that caused all sorts of problems. People became cut off from their families, jobs, and fields. Others feel that Israel means to use it as the future border. I don't think that is a valid argument but appearances count too.

I also understand why Israel is building it. It is the same idea as a gated community. As long as there is freedom of movement the bombers can get to their targets with impunity. If the barrier had followed the original plan I'd have no qualms about it except to doubt its efficacy. The way it is now it is creating hardships and in the process recruiting more terrorists.

So I answered other.

you're right about the biased language. In retrospect, only calling it a wall was stupid and narrow of me...i've done a lot more research since i submitted that poll.

What else do you call a 20 foot hight concrete structure with razor wire on the top and gun turrets every couple hundred yards? A freedom partition?

let me clarify something: i agreed with gordon in this situation because i think a poll should be nonbiased in the wording, and calling the wall a "wall" does reference my position as to what i think of the wall... and my personal opinion has no place in the actual poll question.



i can't always accurately call the wall a wall, though. there are some places where it's a fence. a barbed-wire electric fence. honestly, i think the semantics game is kind of silly... it does the same thing, regardless of the materials used to construct it.

If it looks like a turd, and smells like a turd, then you can safely call it a "turd".
