Poll: Who's your favorite hobbit?

Y'all know I"m in love with Pip.

I've always thought there was so much more to admire in Sam's character than in the others.

The way I've always seen it (since the first time I read the books years ago) Frodo didn't really have a choice. (And for that matter, Bilbo didn't have much more choice than Frodo did.) Merry and Pip just wanted an adventure. But Sam went on this huge dangerous journey -- not because he wanted an adventure, and not because he had a great task put on his shoulders, but because he wanted to make sure his friend would be OK.

Of course, I have a cold, and my reasoning is usually fuzzy to begin with, so, uhm, feel free to call me a loony and tell me I'm wrong.

As I remember, Sam DID have a great task put on his shoulders.� Gandalf sent him along as punishment for listening in at the window.� There's a selflessness in his character, in that he stayed the journey to keep Frodo safe... but there's also part that kept going to avoid crossing the wizard.

Of course, it's been a while since I read the book... and the first movie was so long ago.� I may be mistaken.� It wouldn't be the first time.

And I agree, Samwise Gamgee is has the strongest character.�

I had always gotten the impression, at least in the movie, that Sam really wanted to go and keep Frodo safe and Gandalf gave him the assignment as a kind of wink-and-nudge assent to what he already wanted.

But I also may be remembering wrong. :)

You are right Andrea. Sam wanted to go with Frodo and "see the Elves."

Well, Gollum is mentioned in Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lot of Love" - and I wouldn't be suprised if William Shattner has a cover version. Of course, Gollum's really Smeagol, so I don't think you would've said "other" Hobbit. Am I close?

I'm very much a Beatles girl but I had my Zep phase in high school. And my Floyd phase but that didn't really die, just got less fanatic. Zep, not even into them anymore. Ah well. :)

Because while I love the movies, The Hobbit is the only one of the books I enjoy to read.

Yeah, I'm rereading The Hobbit...he is one great character.

When I first read LOTR I was so disappointed that Bilbo wasn't the main character. After he went off I considered not finishing it. I flipped through the pages till I found his name again in the Rivendell chapters so I continued reading.

Smeagol was not a hobbit per se. He's mentioned as a "hobbit-like" creature.

He is a hobbit, akin to the father of the father of the Stoors. That can be found in "the Shadow out of the Past" in FOTR

The TV-Guide channel has been running an RotK "Behind the Scenes" snippet. In the Sean Austin interview part, he says that Gollum used to be hobbit.

Samwise Gamgee is the most expressive, emotional of the performances of the trilogy. He has only one goal: Look out for Frodo's well-being! Nothing more.� It requires him to summon up courage he never knew he had at times, to see that Frodo does not give up, and do whatever he has to to make sure Gollum does not get the ring, and Frodo throws it in the fires. It is at times heart-breaking and exhilarating to see (for example) Sam pick Frodo up because he can not go any further. To see him try to get to Frodo, whom is on a boat, knowing he can not swim.

Plus, there's the fact that, no matter who else you're talking about, Sam'll kill'em if they try anything. *nodnod*

Legolas finally got it out of Pippin that he's the prettiest elf in the fellowship [however, Pippin purposely failed to remind Legolas he is the *only* elf in the fellowship]... Aragorn is *still* not king... Arwen is playing "aloof,unavailable elf princess"... Elrond still thinks he looks good in purple... and they're all accusing Boromir of being a pervy hobbit fancier.. but of course, as said above.. no worries.. Sam will kill him if he tries anything... however, he convinced one of the other little halflings to blow his horn of Gondor.. *dies*

frodo is intricate, clever, and so. very. pretty. thatwillbeall.

I voted for Frodo. The only other one I considered was Bilbo. Frodo is the most complex by far. He is the one that really has to make the difficult decisions. He carry's the weight of the world on his shoulders and never forgets it.

As 'Nay was always so damned fond of reminding me, Smeagol wasn't neccesarily a hobbit, per se. He was either something hobbitlike, or a sort of "hobbit neanderthal," a "protohobbit" if you will. His hobbitish status was really a product of the speculation of an old gray wizard who was probably off fighting Nazgul in Arnor at the time when Smeagol's people actually lived.

Hobbits proper are scared of water, and Smeagol and his family were totally down with water. Yo.

Long after, but still very long ago, there lived by the banks fo the Great River on the edge of the Wildernald a clever-handed and quiet footed little people. I guess they wre of hobbit-kind; akin to hte fathrs of the fathers of the Stoors, for the loved the River, and often swam in it, or made little boats fo reeds.

Not all hobbits hated water, the Brandybucks didn't. Merry, Pippin, and Frodo were all experienced boatman. Frodo's father died in a boating accident.
