Favorably misheard lyrics

   Discussion: Favorably misheard lyrics
Andrea Krause · 21 years, 6 months ago
So, on the subject of misheard lyrics...

Are there any lyrics you misheard and they were actually the better for it? For the life of me I can't think of any of my examples but there have been things I've misheard for a long time and loved the line and when I found out the real words I was disappointed in the result. :)

Anyone?
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Argh it's bugging the hell out of me. I know the one I was thinking of when I wrote this was a Christina Abbott one but I can't remember what it was! :)

back in the early days of rem, when michael stipe was even worse at enunciating than he is now, people would often share their mondegreens with him and then he'd change the words of his songs to their misheard versions because he liked them better.
Mamalissa! Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
I thought "And the less I seek my source for some definitive" was "And the less I seek my soul for some divinity."
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
ooh, i like.
Eri · 21 years, 6 months ago
i have to go home and pay attention to music because i know i have a LOT of these!
nate... · 21 years, 6 months ago
How about, "Look straight at the common disaster"?
Zach Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
*looks up lyrics*

Holy crap! Coming disaster?! Wow....I had no idea....
*feels ashamed*
nate... Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
yeah, see? The misheard version is SO much better!
Shelly Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
*5,000 shellypoints for carey for using the word mondegreens*

*g*
Yvonne Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
That's what I heard...and sang... :D

*gets out lyrics*
danced with Lazlo Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
did you know that the source of that word is from a song called The Bonny Earl of Murray?
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
You mean...that's not what the line really is?
*Pout.
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Nope. I think "coming" is much better. The disaster is coming at you and you're looking straight at it, meeting it head on, realizing what you've lost. If the disaster were "common" it's impact would be lessened, don't you think?
nate... Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Exactly the reason I like it better.

Coming disaster is so predictable.

But with common disaster it brings in the whole sense of futility... of you wondering why the hell you still consider it a "disaster" even though you know everyone goes through it.
Shelly · 21 years, 6 months ago
i used to think that the nields were singing

o/' and, you know, this town is wrong o/'

which actually also made sense :)
meh Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
o/~ Ye highlands and ye lowlands, oh where ha' ye been...o/~
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
I did as well
nate... Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Well, I've gotta ask... what's the real lyric?
Shelly Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
o/' an-ge-la this town is wr-oooo-ooo-oo-oo-oong o/'
Shelly Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
*whew*

so it's -not- just me???

i thought i was a dumbass

s'hup!!
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Yeah it didn't occur to me until others referenced it that they would even use a proper name. I automatically think in general terms.
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Oh, and I also thought the rest of it was "and you must spread your wings and be gone" which made sense as well.
Shelly Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
heh. so did -i-

go us!!!!!
Laura P. Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
So what is the real lyrics?
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
Shell answered that a few posts up. It's "Angela", not "and, you know," and "and you must".
frumanchu · 21 years, 6 months ago

I always messed up the lyrics to their Piece of Mind opener. Since they customize parts of it for every show, and since I'm a Cleveland Indians fan who is used to getting my hopes dashed and being the butt of many a joke, it seemed only natural to hear the opening line as... "I understand about Indians' Season..."

Rachel Beck Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
If/when the lads come back from hiatus, I'd like to hear them sing The Bonny Earl of Murray.
Phoenix Back · 21 years, 5 months ago

Well, I decided to revive this thread. It really depends on the interpretation of favorable. It's up to you to decide. Here are my contributions:

1. Richard Shindell - Next Best Western: I am wretched, I am tired heard as I'm Richard, I'm tired (took me really a long time to get this right.)

2.It might be a big mistake(tm) to post this but here we go: Dar Williams - Another Mystery: Screw myself with an inscrutable pout heardas Screw myself and then screw the whole town. *ducks*

(really wierd. I talked with some guy at FRFF who heard it the same way.perverts unite:)

Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
I finally remembered!! I used to hear the lyric "I see through you" as "icy blue you" and was so sad that wasn't it. The phrase just hits me really strongly. So I used it as inspiration for a poem later. So at least my mishearing led to creativity. :)

Taken from the Soul Coughing FAQ

Doughty's Disclaimer of Luv
 -or-
 Explaining the Explanations

We get accosted by a lot of stoned folks--lovely people, though--who quiz us about
the nuances of meaning and overarching thematic content in our songs. I guess our
purpose is to cater to the discriminating drug user, so I can't complain. But mostly,
when I'm hashing out the lyrics, I'm thinking, "Ooh, nice word. Pretty word. Mm,
word tastes nice, I like." So it's mostly a sound thing, a musicality thing. Still, given
the couple of lucid flashes in the lyrics, I've been asked to discuss the songs.
Though personally, I'm more apt to dig the beats, and being that I can't read or
write notation, you'll only get the meatheaded metaphors here.

P.S. If you hear lyrics wrong and imagine some construction of words that doesn't
really exist, please bring it to our attention and we'll retool the lyrics to match your
mistake. We love that more than anything else. Also enclose any five percent
nations you may have.

Since the group was Boston, it may have been inspired by disappointing baseball. I'm surpised Chicago didn't do a version.

i like your reasoning, nate.

i thought it was "common" too....weird.

Once I was the King of Spades...

j/k :)

I actually used to say that all the time when playing bridge with Fruheads at school.
Laura P. · 21 years, 1 month ago
...I heard as "poison summer."
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 10 months ago

One I remembered this weekend is in Lode Star by Sarah Harmer I always had thought it said "the oar dips into ore-like water" and thought that was a really clever play on words, using homonyms but also conveying the blackness of the water/night.

I was sad when I found out it was "oil-like"...it still conveys the blackness but I liked the homonym aspect.

goovie is married! · 20 years, 10 months ago
in "walk on the ocean," i thought the line "wood becomes bone" was "words become more." i still like that better. i should use it in one of my songs.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 10 months ago
Hey why not? I used my misheard Christina "icy blue you" in a poem. :)
Bender · 20 years, 10 months ago
some blue rodeo song,
"...condoms in her eyes" (kindness in her eyes)

maybe she felt like she needed extra protection...
Mark Back · 20 years, 10 months ago

If when the lads come back from hiatus, I'd like to hear them sing The Bonny Earl of Murray.

Sorry... :-)

I Built A Little Empire out of some crazy garbage
called the blood of the exploded working class

I always imagined the working class exploding and John Linnell using the bloody guts to build his empire. hee ;)

"Cats from every background, lord, sometimes I'm overcome thinkin' 'bout it, making love in the green grass behind the stadium with you"

I thought it was very 60's and groovy. Cool guys from every background all making love with my brown eyed girl.
Rimbo · 20 years, 10 months ago
" . . . And as she beheld it, she said I misspelled it. 'Niedermorgensen.'"

As opposed to "need more be said." I always figured that would be a name that would be easy to misspell. How Ed would fit it on the back of his head is beyond me. Probably hyphenated.
jen · 20 years, 10 months ago
my mom used to sing that song that goes "my bonnie lies over the ocean..."

i didnt know what the hell a bonnie was, i always thought it was "my body lies over the ocean"!

ha, morbid.

jen
A girl named Becca Back · 20 years, 10 months ago
You mean....it's not "my body lies over the ocean"?!?!?!

O:)
Rimbo · 20 years, 10 months ago
Almost forgot this one:

"A trail of vacant derrieres / next time they'll be more thoughtful."

How a kick would cause one's butt to vacate is beyond me.
Bender Back · 20 years, 10 months ago

me, too.

I thought it was about a guy who died in a shipwreck who wanted to get back to his body.

I had a mental image of a guy floating face-down in a body of water next to a boat...

Hi, childhood trauma?

Rimbo · 20 years, 9 months ago
I know it's been a while, but I just remembered this one. I'm not sure if I've ever actually thought these were the lyrics, but sometimes I wish they were:

Get In The Car:
"Look at the curves and the overhand swerves,
baby's in Hanson."
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
they sang that at an NYC show - after admitting that Dave was the oldest brother in Hanson.

My friend Graham has trouble enunciating when he's excited, and he once called something an "obstacle illusion."
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

That's when you hallucinate a wall in front of you.

Rimbo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Hee hee. Or pylons. "Look out!!!! Oh, wait, there's nothing there."
Mamalissa! · 20 years, 9 months ago
.oO Where the deer and the cantaloupe play Oo.
A.J. · 20 years, 9 months ago
Here comes a stingray
There goes a manta-ray
In walked a jelly fish
There goes a dog-fish
Chased by a cat-fish
In flew a sea robin
Watch out for that piranha
There goes a narwhal
HERE COMES A BIKINI WHALE!

I always heard the last line as "Here comes a Caterwaul!" which I think is 10 times better than the real line.

Ligeia Lester · 20 years, 9 months ago
when I was young (really young) I wondered who the hell would sing a song called "Im your fetus"
Ligeia Lester · 20 years, 9 months ago
I also thought she was saying something about a "cross-eyed bear that you gave to me"

like a really ugly toy from a carnival or something...
Talcott Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
"And sadly the cross-eyed bear's been put to sleep behind the stairs
And his shoes are laced with irony"

Talcott · 20 years, 9 months ago
It wasn't until the drive to Frcon VI that I learned that it was a bad moon on the rise, and not a bathroom on the right.

Honestly, I think bathroom is a cooler image.
*shrug*
Nik Chaikin · 20 years, 9 months ago
The preset-tense has beans, which i thought was a realy clever play on words.
It's a girl! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

ooh irony... that's like rain on your wedding day, right?

It's a girl! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
"wood becomes bone?" dude, that sucks.
It's a girl! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Daytripper : When I was about 15 I heard the line "she only played one night stands" as "she only bled for my sins"

And last year I could have sworn the song Love Is by Sublime contained the line, "I can play guitar like a motherfuckin' pirate"

I'm pretty sure that's wrong!

Talcott Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
No, that's coensidence ;-)
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
like....Raising Arizona and Fargo? :)
Rimbo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
It's pretty sad that it took me so long to get that, Andrea. But it is well appreciated.
