   Discussion: Are you voting today?
A girl named Becca · 22 years, 4 months ago
I'm not voting, because I just registered to vote yesterday and that wasn't early enough for tomorrow's election. And yes, the governor's race in VT is really close and my vote might have mattered, etc., etc... But hey, I'll vote next time (probably for something really exciting like a school budget...). Before I turned 18, I had every intention of being an exceptionally active, well-informed citizen. Guess that didn't so much happen.
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I'm a bad person too. I didn't know about the 30-day thing (which seems silly in the electronic era, what are they trying to prevent, a drive-by-voting?). Plus, there aren't any interesting local issues and I'm sure as hell not voting for some random (Republican |Democrat).

Oh well, at least I won't get called to jury duty! *ducks*
nate... Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
*nods*
I got bit by the same thing.
*sighs*
Just my luck too, for the first time I actually WAS going to vote!
sheesh.
sheryls Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
actually, i know nothing of the issues around here or in ohio at all - it's not that i dont care, it's just that i failed to do my research this year. i'm registered in BG and all, and i voted in 2000. the first i heard of most of the candidates and issues was last night during that wierd remake of Carrie. (i rarely watch television)
Talcott Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Yeah, Ohio has been really bad about getting any information out. I even tried to do some research and couldn't find much. I found some background, but nothing on any issues. Right now I'm half tempted to just vote against the people who ran the worst attack ads.

Although I do like Hagan (the democrat for governor), even if he is Captain Janeway's husband ;)
Mostly though, I just want anyone other than our current governor to get in...

zil Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
well with me its that I don't care. I know I should care. I try to care, but in the end I just end up saying "fuck it" because when it comes right down to it I never like any of the candidates and I really don't care if they move the boat ramp to a different location on sebago lake (this is always a point of contention in these highly hickish parts). I know of a few people who are voting for me as the next govener of maine... because I made my own signs and put them all over southern maine... VOTE ZIL FOR GOVENER.
Agent Scully Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I forgot that was on - how was the movie?

I hate when they do TV remakes!
goovie is married! Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
you know, i've never seen the original or read the book, altho i've always wanted to...i caught some of the remake last night and now i'd really like to go back and see and read the original.
Agent Scully Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Watch the original movie.

Scared the [bleep] outta me when I was 12. :)

No one can replace Sissy Spacek as Carrie White.
sheryls Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
they fudged the ending. bigtime.
trunger is counting... Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
If anything, the 2000 Presidential has taught me that my vote does not count. Only Florida's vote counts and they're kinda screwed up bunch down there. Not that I'm saying anything bad about Florida, mind you. Go Pack....I mean Rams...uh....vote for Nader!
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
My guess is that Florida's vote probably doesn't count in local elections that don't take place in Florida. We do vote for people other than Presidents, ya know. :P (I use the term "we" loosely...because, as mentioned earlier, I'm not actually voting today...)
Andrea Krause · 22 years, 4 months ago
I have never voted and I'm 26. The first time I ever really WANTED to vote was 2000 but I didn't get registered in time. I so much did not want Bush elected. Whoops. Not that it would have made a difference since CT didn't go that way.

I just have a hard time wanting to vote. I care about issues...but I don't find the motivation to research them and see which candidates match up with my views. And I don't want to make a half-assed voting attempt on party lines just because. If I vote I want it to be because I know what I'm voting for and I believe in it.

Yes, ultimately it's my fault for not being informed. But that doesn't make me any more motivated to GET informed! I suck.
Starfox · 22 years, 4 months ago
The races here in Texas have been all about mud slinging and tying the other guy to Enron. So, I am proud to say my vote will go towards a worthwhile goal: insuring the Libertarians get enough votes to remain on the ballot for next election.

Libertarian: It's the only way to vote. :)
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
> Libertarian: It's the only way to vote. :)

I agree! I think that the government should pass a law forcing people to vote Libertarian.
iPauley Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Now, how democratic would that be? :-P

-- Pauley
Starfox Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Very democratic, if the Libertarians were in a majority. See, that's why we have a republic, not a democracy. :)
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I think the real question is, how libertarian would that be? ;P
Starfox Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Not libertarian at all, but that doesn't make my original statement any less true. ;-P
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I was just being an ironic punk as always, don't mind me ;-)
Starfox Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I know that, you know that, but they seemed to not know it. Perhaps you should but "j/k" and smiley faces for the ironically impaired?

I still think our Libertarian candidate for governor should have paid for one ad that said "Vote for me, at least I'm not Rick Perry or Tony Sanchez."
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Um, actually, I did know that. I thought it was pretty clear, especially from the ";P" that I was attempting to go along with the irony, not say it was dumb because I'm "impaired" and didn't get it. Perhaps my impairment is in making my own irony evident.
Talcott Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Well, while I think it's fairly obvious that I'm not a Libertarian, I will agree that it's a worthwhile goal.

Getting any party other than the big two on the ballot would be a good thing!
iPauley · 22 years, 4 months ago
Since, for the first time sicne I turned 18, I've got a car and the day off, I don't need an absentee ballot this year -- I'm running home for the afternoon to vote, as well as do some other things while I'm home for a few hours. Hrm, having spent the last 5 years in Rochester, I know more about things going on up here than I do about things back home. Perhaps I should change my registered polling place next year.

The only election I ever missed was my first. It was an off year election, my first away at college and I didn't get my absentee ballot. Since then I've voted in every general election and primary. I'm kicking myself for not working on the campaign this year. McCall is being killed in the NY Gubenatorial race.

I actually ran for democratic county commitee once. I lost. I didn't vote for myself. I didn't live in the district I was running in.
Jºnªthªn Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
will it count? In my state, if they don't have it in hand by Nov 5, it doesn't count.
goovie is married! · 22 years, 4 months ago
i just got back from voting. i know i'm moving out of maryland in a few weeks, but lots of people i care about will still be here, so i wanted to do my part, however small and inconsequential it actually is.
J · 22 years, 4 months ago
I'm not an American, thank god!

I did marry one thogh and I supose I could vote but I really dont know the first thing about the american government.
Im just now figuring out the Canadian one
Agent Scully · 22 years, 4 months ago
They all get their patronage friends in. They don't really care about the issues they advertise about - well they do to win the vote, but afterwards they don't.

One woman running for county clerk - I grew up with her kids, her kids were terrors (blowing firecrackers at the dog while she was out of the house). She's a political idiot.

Either way I vote, a$$h--es get in, their patronage friends get in with $50-90 a year jobs, the rest of us make $7 per hour with college degrees unless you go the patronage route, they cut the funding for the schools (???) and our area is heavily taxed. So we're screwed either way.
dgodwin Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I voted. I was going to vote for the Marijuana reform party governor canidate (NY), Thomas K. Leighton, but I never heard anything about him before. I guess he should've spent more money on advertising, and less money buying pot! ;)
nate... Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Or at least more money on buying pot for YOU, eh?
;)
Agent Scully Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I saw that!

I was going to vote for that party too!

And what a Par-TAY we would have! *puff*

:D
Starfox · 22 years, 4 months ago
That people seem to think we have a democracy here in the United States? We don't! We have a constitutional republic. Sure, not as easy to roll off the tongue as "democracy", but it's true. We do NOT have a system of government of "one person, one vote."
Agent Scully Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
People in general or the whole nation? Sounds like you're grouping everyone here into the "collective" of people.

Don't do that.
Starfox Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
People in general. Not specific sets of people.
Drea · 22 years, 4 months ago
Our politicians are idiots too.. but at least I live in a country where the party with the most votes actually wins *g* Would someone explain to me why positions like Comptroller are voted on (and judges for that matter.. wtf is that about?)?
Rachel Beck · 22 years, 4 months ago
I voted absentee yesterday. For the second time. Don't worry--it's legal. The state of Minnesota decided that those who cast ballots before Sen. Paul Wellstone died could request another ballot (and their first one would be tossed out).
Rhi: so confused · 22 years, 4 months ago
My birthday's in December- and I'm suddenly feeling very, very young. But if I could vote, I would. Go Jennifer Granholm!
Kevin - King of WiFi Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
yeah, im off by *counts on fingers* 10 months, which is a shame, it's supposedly very close, but i have no idea what is *truely* going on, the media lies about this crap except for the numbers that they have to correctly report.
John J. Ryan · 22 years, 4 months ago
You think with all the signs for "Vote for "insert name here"" everywhere, they'd have signs for "Vote for "insert name here" by making a right here..."
danced with Lazlo · 22 years, 4 months ago
well, with the exception of the gubenatorial (sp?) race, every candidate who was not in the Democrat box was in the Right To Life box. I don't like to be defined by party lines, but God *Damn!*
Agent Scully Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
I was looking for some who were "independent" and those boxes were blank. So I decided to screw around and vote, "liberal, independent, conservative" etc.

Even for the governor I didn't vote in the "regular" category.

I did that when I was one of those "patronage f---s" with my college job and I don't intend to ever be one again. :p I don't like the idea that my job depends on who is in office and whose a$$ I have to kiss which is very predominant in WNY.
