   Discussion: 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

How many covers are their of this song.  It's a Richard Thompson song and  I know Butch Ross and The Mammals have covered it and I think some chick with a guitar (perhaps Dar?).   Are their anymore that are floating out there?

1952 VBL is the greatest song ever, period, finito.

Ok now that that is out of the way; you didn't mention the most successful cover of it; the Del McCrory Band. It was named bluegrass song of the year. Yes they did a bluegrass version.

Before all these covers came out I tried to talk the Kennedys into doing a version of it. Richard Thompson is their favorite performer. They thought it was too closely associated with RT. Too bad, I think it would work great as a man/woman dialogue.

So have I mentioned that it is the greatest song ever written?

Someone who didn't know I was a RT fan came up to me one day and told me:

"Said James, in my opinion,
Nothing in this world
Beat a 52 Vincent and a red-headed girl.

Was the greatest line from a song. "

The Del McCrory Band version is also available in a karaoke version which I have!

J. Andrew World Back · 17 years, 11 months ago
But who was the chick with the guitar?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 17 years, 11 months ago
I sort of feel I should know this. Could it be Antje Duvekot? I wish I had a brain.
J. Andrew World Back · 17 years, 11 months ago
Did she play FRFF main stage years ago?  I think that is where I heard it.

antje played the new artist showcase a few years ago...but she only did originals.
J. Andrew World Back · 17 years, 11 months ago
I think it was FRFF '99 or '00 where I heard some female sing it.  Maybe it was Cry Cry Cry.  Maybe it was Dar solo.  I honestly don't remember, but the first time I heard it was by a chick with a guitar.

There's more than one woman who has covered it, but the best known one that I'm aware of is Mary Lou Lord.

How did you dig up a two year old forum? How did I not comment on the shock that someone started a forum on 1952 VBL and it wasn't me? Have I mentioned that it is the greatest song ever written? How much do I love this song? I have this picture on my profile. Red Molly (not the band)

If I remember correctly, I started this thread for you., Gordon
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 15 years, 10 months ago
Thank you Andy.
Said Gordon; "In my opinion, nothing in this world' Beats this Richard Thompson song and a red headed girl."

vote for the mammals... as it's the only version I've heard.

Don't forget Jeff Lang, off of Disturbed Folk, vol 2.

Great version.

The rate this song has been covered, we could put out a double disc album.

"Hi there, this is Wink Martindale, and we have a compalation for you, "'52 Vincent Black Lightning" featuring Humans on guitars.  This double disc album includes '52 Vincent Black Lightning, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, '52 Vincent Black Lightning, and Many more.  Don't wait!  As a special bonus we will throw in a spacial bonus collection of all the covers of Yesterday.  (Beatles version not avalible)  That is right, over 3000 versions of the same song can be yours for a very special price of $24.95  Don't wait call now!"

And yes, all the fictional ads in my head contain wink martindale.

A search of my hard drive shows that the document "JOINT APPENDICES for the 2005 BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARDS FOR RESIDENTIAL AND NONRESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS" from the California Energy Commission (don't ask) has all the words "1952," "Vincent," "Black," and "Lightning" in it.... For some reason I thought I had a live Dan Bern cover of it but I couldn't find it.

Didn't Tracy Grammer do a RT song last year at FRFF? Though perhaps not that one in particular... I can't recall.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 15 years, 10 months ago
She did it this year. I heard it from the Budgiedome. I couldn't be down there to listen because of the storm.
Misch Back · 15 years, 10 months ago
Yes, Jim Henry sang the lead.
John J. Ryan Back · 15 years, 10 months ago
It was also the last song played on the main stage this year, just as the hail storm was kicking into gear.

By a performer.  "Never Turning Back" was sung on the mainstage at about 7:30.  I think it was one of the staff members.
