Who Represents You?
Do you know all your elected officials? I thought I did but the congressional website said that I had a different congressman than I thought. I found out when I voted that I was right and the website was wrong. So Yes I know all my elected officials. Tell us yours. I'm just going to list the top officeholder at each level.
- President of the U.S. - George W. Bush
- Vice President of the U.S. - Richard Cheney
- U.S. Senator - Hillary Clinton
- U.S. Senator - Chuck Schumer
- U.S. Congressman - Anthony Weiner
- New York State Governor - George Pataki
- New York State Governer Elect - Eliot Spitzer
- NYS Attorney General - Eliot Spitzer
- NYS Attorney General Elect - Andrew Cuomo
- NYS Comptroller - Alan Hevesi
- NYS Senator - Frank Padavan
- NYS Assembly - Mark Weprin
- New York City Mayor - Michael Bloomberg
- NYC Ombudsman - Betsy Gotbaum
- NYC Comptroller - William Thompson
- NYC City Council - Tony Avella
I hear that William Thompson is a mighty fine comptroller. In fact, one of the best comptrollers around. But man. Betsy's going to fuck your shit up as a your ombudsman. Keep an eye on her. She mustn't be trusted.
I always thought "comptroller" was a word made up for that simpsons episode.
:D
What do you think happens if a Comptroller and an Ombudsman have kids...
I can't believe I wrote Ombudsman. The title is Public Advocate. The position is always described as being an ombudsman, not a word you use every day.

This was fun. I had to look some of them up, though. Huzzah, we now have a democratic senator in the state of misery!
OOO you put in the party affiliations. I should have thought of that.
Your congressman's name is Weiner? *snerk*
I'm sorry, that was out of line. *self-thwap*
Though it does remind me of a thread I saw once on another site about current House Majority Leader Boehner's name being pronounced "bay-ner", which negated a bunch of potentially crude jokes. :-P
-- Pauley
What annoys me is that he pronounces his own name wrong. It should be pronounced Whiner. "ei" is pronounced like "eye" in German. Nobody says Einstein as "een-steen" but in most other cases people get it wrong. Somewhere along the line Weiner's family gave up and it became "weener."
That's just about my only complaint with him.
Actually, by that logic, shouldn't it be pronounced 'Viner'?
You are right but nobody does that. Nobody calls and American Vagner. People do get teh EI right sometimes. What is really weird is that in English EI is pronounced ay as in neighbor and weigh. But that always has that GH attached to it.
Isn't Wagner the composer pronounced Vagner?
Yes I was thinking of him. The thing is he's German. Nobody calls the actor Robert Vagner. Or the Baseball Player Honus Vagner.
> NYS Comptroller - Alan Hevesi
Oh, Alan. You've gone and broken my heart...
Tony Blair - Prime Minsiter
Lynne Featherstone - MP
and my local council is majority labour.
I think that is it.

"Prime Minister?" "MP?" Now you're just making up political positions.
Barbara Lee speaks for me!
I was just discussing this with someone yesterday when I discovered a poll in which 27% of respondents had never heard of Dennis Hastert.
So, the real question is, which people should everyone be able to identify (elected or otherwise)? Here's my list:
The President
The Vice President
The Speaker of the House
The Secretary of State
The Chief Justice of the United States (and bonus points if they know that 'Chief Justice of the Supreme Court' is incorrect)
Their representative in the House (except DC, which doesn't have one)
Their senators (again, not including DC, which isn't allowed any)
Their governor (DC residents should know their Mayor)
But doesn't DC have a non-voting delegate for the House of Representatives?
Does your username say "Let's go Arizona!" because we were the first state to strike down an anti-gay marriage proposition?
Has that been officially called anywhere? I mean, it's looking like a pretty sure thing at this point, but none of the news sites are saying it. Probably because they're too chicken to properly report it.
On the other hand, Virginia did send Webb to the Senate over Macaca, but the homophobic bigotry amendment passed overwhelmingly. Not only does it outlaw gay marriage, but it outlaws all forms of civil union and anything that can approximate marriage in any way at all. It makes unmarried couples into second class citizens.
Excuse me it is not nice to refer to Allen as Macaca. His full name is Macacawitz!
Hey now, are you casting aspersions about our soon-to-be former Senator?
From his point of view yes as he thinks it is an aspersion to call someone Jewish.
Is there a way we can amend Jewish law to make him not Jewish? I'm sure he'd want that too.
If the bill outlaws all civil unions, wouldn't that make it easier for people to bring it to the VA supreme court as unconstitutional?
The VA supreme court has been made irrelevant by it. It's an amendment to the Constitution. The only way to get it overturned now is by the US Supreme Court, which will be a lot harder to do.
In New York Governer Elect Spitzer has promised to move to legalize Gay Marriage. I don't know if he'll be able to get it by the Republican Controlled State Senate.
yes, yes it is. Go Arizona for defeating that discriminatory and very limiting proposition!
Where should it go? Mexico?

Can I go too?
Yeah, but nobody knows who that is. I don't think the person who holds the position is even aware of it.
(although I have to imagine with a Democratic house now, DC might be treated a bit more favourably for a change.)
ya know...the sad thing is that I actually work with a person who not long ago uttered the question "Who's Condoleza Rice?"....her excuse is that she doesn't like watching the news because it's boring and there's never anything good on it. anyone else work with morons?
At least she didn't say she prefers Uncle Ben's Rice.
Or call Rice an Uncle Ben.
