Poll: Did you or will you vote today?

Did you or will you vote today? When someone runs unopposed I write in someone as a protest. That happens a lot with judgeships in New York. In previous years I've voted for the guys in Fruvous, hobbits, and cartoon characters. This year I voted for New York musicians who are actually elegible for the positions; Christine Lavin and Pete and Maura Kennedy.

There was an unopposed candidate for county board this year, but I decided that a protest vote would be more of a protest against him than the idea of him running unopposed, and it was a candidate I could get behind, so I wasn't going to vote against him just for the sake of voting against him.

I voted and am very nervous about the outcome of the election here in California. *bites nails*

Whew! All the propositions were defeated, what a relief. It's nice to occasionally have an election go your way, you know?

If i lived there I'd have voted for non-partisan redistricting. That would be better done on a national level though.

Well of course I'm for non-partisan redistricting. It's just that that proposition in California would have allowed Schwartzenegger to appoint three judges who would do the redistricting. Not exactly non-partisan, eh?

There's no such thing as non-partisan. Someone's got to approve/appoint/assign/grant that ability to somebody/some organization/some group of people. So political persautions will always factor into those kinds of decisions.

Districting should just be a numerical game and the boundaries should be designated as having to be contiguous and roughly geometrically rhomboid. :)

I have come to believe that redistricting should be done by computers using an algorthim that takes into account socioeconomic but not political considerations. The devil of course is in the details.

I totally, completely agree with you. I just really thought that the plan on the ballot in California was likely to be a *particularly* partisan solution...and therefore was happy to see it defeated.

I voted! Nothing major of note here except the Constitutional Amendment defining marraige as between a man and a woman and prohibiting all forms of marriage/civil union between same sex couples.

My sister told me about that one. She said she hoped that people would be confused by the way it was worded. A vote for the proposal is a vote against gay marriage.

Oh the wording on virtually all the ballot items was atrocious. One I read three times and still couldn't tell you what it was doing. I had to go dig up some editorials on them and sift through what they said.

There should be a requirement to use proper english when describing stuff on a ballot.

Unfortunately, the amendment to ban gay marriage passed overwhelmingly.

Unfortunately most proposals are worded to be as opaque as possible, not as clear. They really should hire a non-partisan high school english teacher to phrase them. Any editor would reject them immediately.

I voted. Rochester had a mayoral race (incumbant Mayor Johnson is retiring), and there were two propositions on the card -- one for allowing the state legislature create its own budget if it can't agree with the governor on one before the start of the fiscal year, and one to borrow money to repair roads.

Elections for two City Counselors and school-board members. I didn't know enough about the races (or care enough to learn about them) to add anything but noise.

School Board is really tough to be informed on. I once voted for someone I went to high school with. That was nice.

Ohio (albeit a bit late for the 2004 presidential elections) finally got voter verified paper trails in their machines.

New Jersey, my new home, hoever, doesn't have them in their machines. I have no way to be certain my vote was counted.

Well, I know for a fact that Atlantic County mysteriously "loses" the absentee ballots of registered Democrats.

Ask me for that story sometime.

Meanwhile, PA doesn't even bother sending OUT absentee ballots to registered Democrats.

...Although I may just have missed the deadline. Blah. Why didn't they have a fax machine?

Just before voting, my mom and I got to talk to one of the mayoral candidates of Fairfield, Ohio, where we live. He made a good impression on us, so we both voted for him. The guy ended up winning by ONE VOTE. If we hadn't talked to him, he wouldn't have won. How cool is that?

Just make sure to let him know that he now owes you big time. I see a cushy political job in you future :-)
