i can't speak for Pierre...but if you've ever read Lessing's Mara and Dann you'd know why there aren't many votes..

not too keen on Davies either...my next venture will be to try Garcea Marquez, probly "Love in the Time of Cholora"

Love the Godfather films which is why I voted for Puzo. I'd have liked a "no opinion" option.

You are right that if I were going to read one that's the one I'd read. I didn't like the film [field of dreams] that much and it isn't really my kind of baseball story. Actually I love baseball films but prefer my baseball reading to be non-fiction.

Garcia Marquez is the only one I've read at all, and I've only read one of his books, but I liked it, so I counted him as my favorite. Someday I'll probably even read something else by him, but my to-read list is ridiculous so who knows when I'll get there.

The only one I've read anything by is Davies - the Salterton and Deptford trilogies. Liked them a lot though, so he's my fave.

once, when i was young & foolish, i went to the library & tried to read one book by each of the mblaboa authors (though i was a fan of atwood & garcia marquez before the song).

i don't remember which pierre berton book i got, but i liked it (it was a book of essays), i read a w.p. kinsella, i don't think it was shoeless joe, but uh, i know it was about baseball... it was good, but i was surprised it wasn't more humourous (because of the line). i read bone black, by bell hooks & i have loved her ever since (she's also an excellent speaker). the doris lessing book was play it as it lays? unless i'm getting her mixed up with joan didion. i chickened out of reading burroughs or puzo.

the robertson davies book i got was rebel angels, & i never finished that one. it was really trying my suspension of disbelief, & then i got to the part where, while being set in the modern-day u.s., a twenty-year-old says "but that's fantastic!" & she doesn't mean that's good. after that i just couldn't carry on, it's a weirdness of mine.

Play it as it Lays is indeed Didion, and it is a fantastic book despite not being related to MBLABOA. :)

i chickened out of reading burroughs

It's not so much chickening out as realizing that Burroughs is an incredibly difficult read.� Not difficult in the big words sense, but in the "I�too have to be a morphine junkie to understand where he's going with this" sense.� Don't get me wrong, I love his contemporaries like Kerouac, Ginsburg & Corso... but Bill Burroughs is a little more out there for lack of a better term.

I haven't read his work, but I once listened to a record (vinyl and everything) of him reading some of his own works. So I figure that counts. It wasn't particularly compelling to me, but my bf at the time absolutely loved him.

Am I the only person on here who reads Pierre Berton?(Spelled wrong in the poll - not to nitpick. *g*) Such a fantastic author...

I've read 6 of the authors, plus seen some movies. I chose Marquez, as One Hundred Years of Solitude was one of the first books I read straight through and then opened the first page and started again.

I specifically picked up Ondaatje and Davies because of the song; the rest were independent thereof.
