Poll: Have you ever submitted something for publication? |
Discussion:
Have you ever submitted something for publication?
Yes, I've had a couple of things published and I'm mostly emarassed by/ashamed of them.
ooh, are we bashing one of my former employers? cos i'm always up for that.
You aren't scammed till you buy the book, or the plack or any of the other things they try to sell you.
exactly. the contest? is real. the editorial department is in charge of judging those submissions and they put a lot of thought into selecting the winners. the real winners, that is. you're scammed if you think being a "semifinalist" or whatever means anything--any poem that isn't full of profanity or poetry.com-bashing is a "semifinalist." and you're scammed if you buy any of the crap they try to sell you--the books, the plaques, the mugs, the cds, whatever. you don't have to pay to be published, and you're never forced to pay for anything.
that being said, that company is seriously shady, and all the other editors who were hired and let go along with me would probably back me up.
It was a strange company, I think they deliberatly hired honest and qualified people to run the contest to give the scam aspecs a patina of respectability.

middle school *and* high school, baby!
book reviews (fifth - seventh grade), a really crappy mystery serial (eighth grade), an interview with a really crappy punk band from my school (freshman year), and some thing written from the point of view of a marshmallow peep (sophomore year) not like this counts or anything.

Well, depending on how you definie it, everyone who posts to this has something published.
I'm not as good at sending out submissions as I should be. So far, the only thing I have had published was what amounts to an inside joke for poets, in a small lit magazine a group of us threw together. Wwe had big intentions at the time, which we never actually followed through on.

I said no, because I figured it meant like actual public commercial publication or something. I've been published in high school and college litmags, but I didn't think that counted.
That's how I answered too. I was got things published in high school and college, I think always in the math/science magazines. I don't think I have copies of any of them anymore.
I was also one of the two authors of "the jounral of moral affairs" in college. We used the pen names Modus Ponons and Modus Tollens [spelling help please]. We wrote out a scenario and gave our moral judgement what was right. All I really remember was the "quote of the issue." "Humor is the ultimate morality." This lasted all of one issue, was hand written, and only read by us.
Yeah, I had a couple of musical reviews and an article in the high school paper, but I didn't count those. Though they never chose to run the article I submitted about Condomania. Oh well.

a few pieces in a kids' creative writing magazine, music reviews and news stories in the college newspaper, and one paper in an academic journal.
I read the paper in the academic journal. It was on the Heavenly Twins, see I can remember things.
My assumption is that it's written word, but I am assuming anything.

Been published many times over the years, I have done an album cover, a record logo, magazine spot illustrations, even a magazine cover (To top it off, the guy who did the cover after me, won a hugo award). Also, I have done two chap book covers and the second one has several orginal illustrations. Plus, I have my work on t shirts all around the world, and we arn't just talking about my cafepress store, either. So, yes I have been published.

I have a woman in my life that feels the need to have the world see my work, so she's real insistent that I submit my work to a fan comic for a con.

I've done my share of letter to the editor writing but I doubt if that counts. I was editor of a computer club newsletter and as it is hard to motivate anybody to help, generally I wrote most of it too. I doubt if that counts either. Robin is the serious writer in this family and she has submitted lots of poems to various places, sadly no one has given her a positive response (yet).
I dunno, a friend of mine had a letter to the editor printed in the NY Times and I think she considers that being published. :)

Hmm...
CD Album art. I had a photo published in the RIT Reporter's arts issue. I've written papers and found that they've been cited by two others. I'll probably have a paper published in a conference in the next year or so. Plus a few letters to the editor of various publications, and a couple of articles in GDT.
