Discussion: All them crazy vanity plates
Bender · 20 years, 9 months ago

Today, I saw a plate that said "IAMAWMD"

Tickled me in a way.

What great vanity plates have you seen or had?

Mollie Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

there's some weirdo in virginia whose license plate says "fruvous." what the hell's a fruvous?
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

I had that plate in Indiana... because I thought it sounded cool. Some guy left a note on my car that said, "Fruvous? That takes MOXIE." and an email address. I wrote him and he told me about this great Cher/They Might Be Giants/Journey sounding group called Moxy Fruvous.

The really ironic thing is that my other car had a vanity plate that said MOXY. I'd have looked totally obsessive if anyone had any idea what it was about. Thank God for obscure Canadian groups. :-)

lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
heh. the funny thing was someone once asked me what it meant, because they knew French, and couldn't figure out what "Fru" meant.

Speaking of Fruvous license plates...

For a few years, I had the FRUVOUS plate in Ohio. I moved to California, and let my tags expire for a good two years while I was there. Anyway, I was parked on a street in Santa Cruz and I let the meter expire by a couple minutes. They had given me a ticket in that time! Not being one to bow down to The Man, I threw it away and moved on with my life.

A couple months later, I got an email from Jonathan, who lives up in the Bay Area where I lived. Apparently he has the "FRUVOUS" plate in California, and he kept getting these things in the mail complaining that he hadn't paid his ticket. He sends me a mail asking "hey, were you in Santa Cruz on xxx date? And do you have a blue Honda?" It turns out they had neglected to look at what state the plate was from when they wrote the ticket. He told them that his car doesn't match the description, nobody had to pay the fine, and no one was the wiser. :)

Hey, that was my story! :)
Michael (foof) Maki · 20 years, 9 months ago
There was a white car painted with holstein spots, and the license plate read (no kidding)
MOOOOO

I'd never have believed it if I didn't see it for myself.
Rimbo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Can you imagine what the report would be like if this car was the getaway car in a bank robbery?

"umm, . . . it looked like a cow, but it was a car. And the license plate is an M, then five O's . . . Mooooo."

Jºnªthªn · 20 years, 9 months ago
I was once at a light and saw the following 2 plates, side by side in front of me:
LABORQZ
BAHORQZ

One turned left, and the other went right....
John J. Ryan · 20 years, 9 months ago
I could browse all the vanity plates that were available. I thought about getting MINKCAR, but then I thought my car would get destroyed by PETA.
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 20 years, 9 months ago
In college, there was this sports car that was in this dull limish green color that was pretty hideous. Apparently the owner of the car told a friend of mine that he hated the color but it was a gift from his grandmother, so he didn't have a choice in the end. The license plate for it was BABYPUKE.
Kat Kunz · 20 years, 9 months ago
drove behind this one for a half-mile the other morning:

AUIELOX

Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
In a similar vein, I saw this one:

H2O2BLN
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Is that 'H2O2 BLN' or 'H2O 2BLN'?

And does anyone else remember Bumper Stumpers, the old game show?

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
It is H2O2 BLN

with subscripts it would be H2O2 BLN
Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
You are correct sir!
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I had to ask to be sure, even though that's how I read it the first time. I've got it now. :-)
iPauley Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

*snicker* I've been looking at BLN and thinking it's "blown," like they're talking about a supercharger on the car, or something. But I figured it out now. :-P

renita Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
this one i had to look up...

wouldn't bld make more send than bln though?

or do i have the second part wrong?
iPauley Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I think you've got it. I'd rather have seen both, with an 8-digit number: H2O2BLND. (makes it a little more obvious)

-- Pauley
Mollie Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Pauley said: I'd rather have seen both, with an 8-digit number: H2O2BLND.

Me too, but there's a 7-character limit on California plates.
iPauley Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Ahhhhhhh.

I know it varies by state... NY has 8, PA has 7...

-- Pauley
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
That makes sense, NY is a bigger state.
Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Since when?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
since somehow I was reading the other state as PA not CA.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Well what do you expect from a blonde?
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
....Okay, I am TOTALLY lost. I will be the big loser and come out and say that I totally am not a nerd in this regard and am stupid... what's it mean?
Misch Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
What is Au on the periodic table? + IELOX.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
It's aurum of course.
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I don't get it...is this an American thing??
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

*slaps forehead*

lol, I'm so slow.

Zach · 20 years, 9 months ago
I saw a license plate some time last week that read "IMA NERD". I got very excited and seriously considered following the car until it stopped and hugging whoever owned it.
lawrence · 20 years, 9 months ago
LG&ARY

the question is this - what kind of car did that plate appear on?
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Subaru Legend?

Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
A P "T Cruise"r?
Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I guess nobody got my joke...
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Acura made the Legend. Subaru makes the Legacy.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Aah yes you're right. I always get stuff like that mixed up. :)
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Can you really get an ampersand on a license plate?
lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
apparently you can in VA, where I saw this one. it didn't look painted...
Misch · 20 years, 9 months ago
My friend got the special NY plate with the RIT logo on it. The plate title? "NO SUN"

He drives a Dodge Eclipse.
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
OMG. So appropriate. Especially because they're in Rochester. ;o)
Jºnªthªn · 20 years, 9 months ago
I once saw the plate 1GGL000. I thought it was some Inuit thing until I realized it wasn't a personal plate.
