   Discussion: Worst (capital) sin?
Pacho · 20 years, 11 months ago

For those not playing the Catholic home game, the capital sins are as follows:

  1. Pride
  2. Envy
  3. Wrath/Anger
  4. Sloth
  5. Avarice/Greed
  6. Gluttony
  7. Lust

A more developed discussion of the seven capital sins can be found here

The question is, which of the preceding list is the worst sin?

Pacho · 20 years, 11 months ago
Simply put: pride. It's the only sin that will truly blind you. Pride will allow you to justify envy, wrath, greed and lust. Pride will prevent you from dealing with sloth or gluttony.

but sloth prevents me from dealing with everything. Procrastinators of the world unite and take over!

Yes, take over the world...I'll do that tomorrow...

I just like being difficult on these polls. :D

I've never heard them called "capital sins" before. I always called them them "the seven deadly sins." Of course I'm a nice Jewish Atheist so what do I know?
Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I've heard them called 'the Cardinal Sins', not to be confused with Cardinal Sin of the phillipines.

how about the seven virtues? What are they called? I thought they were cardinal. What are the virtues anyway?

How about the seven wonders of the ancient world? The great pyramid of Cheops, the mausoleum at Halicarnassus the Colossus of Rhodes, the Hanging Gardens of Baylon, the temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the lighthouse at Alexandria (or Pharos), if memory serves.
Sarah Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
I thought they were the seven deadly sins also. Then again I'm a Protestant.

Pride is important, so I don't view it as a sin.

Wrath/Anger can be bad if it is unjustified or unfocused. Wrath/Anger in self-defense is fine.

Avarice/Greed I don't like since there is no fixed definition of Greed any more. Greed for the sole pursuit of money withour regard to any other values is wrong though.

So I had to go with Sloth. I can't stand people who just sit on the butts and don't do anything with their life.

Isn't Sloth what we work so hard for all our lives??

We ASPIRE to sloth!

I know that *I* sure as hell want to retire some day.
Sarah Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Geez. And I thought a sloth was an animal... (you can probably guess I chose the last option on the poll of being difficult)
Starfox Back · 20 years, 11 months ago
Yah, but when I retire, I don't want to stop being productive. The only difference is my productivity goes entirely to my own benefit and not traded for money.

i think envy can encompass some of the other sins as well- certainly it can lead to wrath and maybe to avarice if you're jealous of someone having more money than you. and there can be a link between envy and sloth because sometimes you just feel like "why should i even try- so-and-so will always be better at everything!"
