Poll: What's your handedness?

I'm a dexterous righty 69 (84%)
I'm a sinister lefty 6 (7%)
I go both ways, I'm ambidextrous. 7 (9%)
   Discussion: What's your handedness
Josh Woodward · 21 years, 9 months ago
About 11% of people are lefties, but for some reason I expect that number to be higher for Fruheads. We shall see. :)
betsy =) · 21 years, 9 months ago
first lefty!

and currently, i am 11%..... but then again so's the ambidextrous guy....
I can see the bunny Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
Lefties are apparently more susceptible to mind altering drugs than righties.

Just one of those random things from listening to way too much CBC radio....
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
Lefties are also more prone to Crohn's disease. I'm a righty with it.
sheryls Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

Isnt Crohn's inherited? i'm at risk, as my grandmother had it.

i wonder if she was left handed?

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
It has a genetic component. It is more common among jews too so you have two markers. my mother had Colitus, that counts as a marker too.
sheryls Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
Oh, goody. and everyone knows there's no more pleasant test than that. Can't wait.
Jillian Bird Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

Lefty women are also more likely to be lesbians than righties

ellen · 21 years, 9 months ago
I think, out of all the fruheads I've ever met, I only know one lefty. I also don't go around asking people their handedness that often. :)
nate... · 21 years, 9 months ago
Lefties are SCARY!!!
nate... Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
But yeah... I'm VERY MUCH a rightie.

My left hand is completely useless for writing. Can hardly make letters unless I spend a long time.

Strangely, though, I do fine with guitar, piano and typing... go figure.

Really, you would think that right-handed people would play guitar the opposite way we do.... do fingerings with the right hand.. but we use the left.
Why is that?
Arbie Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

I know what you mean Nate. And I don't know why. Back in the day when I was in high school I was a trumpet player. A bored trumpet player. So I decided to take up French Horn, which uses the left hand instead of the trumpet which is right hand valved. I thought it would be a major adjustment but it wasn't . On the other hand (sic) I have never been any good at piano where theoretically, at least, the hands should be equally dextereous. Actually mine are equal, they are just both useless.

*joolee* Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

*shakes left fist at naight*

I'm a lefty for writing, hitting tennis balls, cutting food, and other craps...I'm righty for cutting w/skizzors, throwing, and other things I can't remember. But I'm more lefty than righty,I think I just conformed too much as a child. Curse the system!

Pacho · 21 years, 9 months ago

Handedness for what?

In boxing, I'm a leftie (southpaw). When writing, I'm a rightie. When one-handed typing (heh) I'm a leftie. For juggling, both sides are equally good (or bad, as the case may be).

I voted for right-handed, fwiw.

renita Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
>>When one-handed typing (heh) I'm a leftie

yah. but is that about typing left handed. or using the hand that isn't occupied with something else (ie: right handed other is more important)

on the second thought, I don't want to know ;D just a rhetorical question.
Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

good call Renita!

;)

sheryls · 21 years, 9 months ago

the painted fingernails on my right hand always look like crap(pointless use of devil sign face)(and strikeout) i'm having too much fun with this editor.

don't you seethat?

ok, i'm done, seriously. work is making me goofy.

yeah, my left hand is just as good as my right hand with typing, esp. since its the only hand needed to typed "test," which i type at least 500 times a day *grr*

as for guitar, i dont blame my lefthanded clumsiness, i just blame the extreme lack of talent :D I can play badminton left handed, fwiw. :D

Mistress Rabean Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

What does "fwiw" mean?

I'm right-handed, but I sometimes try to do things with my left hand just for fun (such as writing/drawing).

Pacho Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
fwiw means for what it's worth. i should have written fwiw
Laura P. · 21 years, 9 months ago

I am a righty, and so is my brother, but our parents are a lefty, and an ambidextrous. I always thought that your handedness was somewhat genetic, so how could that be?

Although what we learned in school about genetics was flawed, or at least overly simplistic. I was taught brown eyes and hair is dominant over blue eyes and light hair. Well I'm a brown-eyed brunette mom of a blonde-haired blue-eyed kid. I constantly have people ask him if he's mine. Ignorance!

renita Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
it's not just about dominance, it's about combinations,

for instance, is one of your parents blonde and blue eyed? because you could have a recessive gene that popped up in him.
so lets see if I can make this work...

from your parents you might have received

mom: blue/blonde
dad: brown/brown

and the father of your child might have received

mom: blue/brown
dad: brown/blonde

so you could both be brown eyed, brunettes... bute there's all kinds of recessive blue and blond in there...

SO. if the info you passed on to the child was blue/ blond mom genes...
and the father passed on th blue mom gene and the blond dad gene...

you could have a blond blue-eyed child...

now, I'm not positve I did that right... and it's still overly simplistic even if I got it mostly right...

yah.

Damn! You beat me to it! :P
renita Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
I'm speedy like that ;D
renita Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
oh yah.. and even then, it's not that simple at all.

for instance, my friend jesse has curly red hair.

the last person with curly red hair was a great great grandmother. no one inbetween her and him in the genetic train had shown that trait. but it still stuck around... that sort of thing can happen too.
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
That happened to me. I was the only one since my great grandpa in my family to have red hair, on either side. (The great grandpa was on mom's side.)
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

It's true that those traits are dominant, but you have 2 genes for each trait. You must be a hybrid (1 gene for dark hair/eyes, 1 gene for light hair/eyes), so you show the dominant trait (dark hair/eyes). However, you only pass on one of those genes to your children, so he must have ended up with 2 recessive (light hair/eyes) genes. :)

I, on the other hand, was taught that curly hair is a dominant trait, and I'm the curly-haired child of two straight-haired parents. Wrap your mind around that one for me. :)

Mamalissa! Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

but you have 2 genes for each trait

yes, there are 2 versions of every gene but most human traits are controlled by multiple genes. The 1 gene for every trait thing is the right idea, but a huge simplification. Unless you're a pea.

renita Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
and actually, there's only one gene and two alleles

two alleles control the one gene that expresses the trait.

;D

just to be difficult.
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
Heh...well, given my track record with correcting people, I certainly can't complain about your correcting me. :) And I definitely realize that it's been a while since high school biology class (4 years already...yikes), and I was probably getting oversimplified information and not studying it very carefully then, anyway.

i'm ambi only when i'm eating. i can wield a fork in either hand. i am dangerous!!!

wahooooo!

a good thing in the field I'm going into.

(but to be honest, I sign righty for the most part, eat lefty, clap with both)

heh

I was born 'Underhanded'... where's *MY* category!?!?!

8^P
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 9 months ago
I'm strongly right-handed but I always felt that I'd fit in more with the lefties. Two of my greatest heroes, Einstein and Da Vinci were southpaws. Not to mention Babe Ruth and Sandy Koufax!
George E. Nowik · 21 years, 9 months ago

lefty.

represent.

some things ambi, but mostly left.

The Dark God Tchernobog · 21 years, 9 months ago
I guess I'm technically a rightie (which I voted for) butfor the past 2 years or so it seems I'm becoming increasingly ambidextrous. I like this.
Andrea Krause · 21 years, 9 months ago
Now the real question is...does your handedness have a direct correlation to which hand you use to wipe. :)
sarah did not die · 21 years, 9 months ago

im right handed, left footed, and play pool all wrong.

favorite pool conversation with someone who actually plays well:

"you suck."

"yes i know."

"what handed are you?"

"right."

"then why are you holding it like that?!?!"

"because iam even worse the other way."

"well switch it."

*does*

"ok.... i was wrong... go back to doing it the stupid way."

basically... im a freak... but i write with my right hand.

Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
!

I play pool left handed too! We rule! :oD
Mamalissa! · 21 years, 9 months ago
Always been a righty, althoughsince I broke my right elbow last month I've given ol' lefty here a chance to shine.

I wonder how many of us made the "sinstra' and "dextra" connections.
Zach Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
I totally caught that. It made me excited. Isn't it Sinister and Dexter in latin, though? Or is that just a different case?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
I actually assumed that most people here would understand the etymology, Fruheads know stuff.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
I also assumed that people would know the word "etymology." I mean we all studied insects right?

[Hopes Bareena sees this]

You just earned 1419 Gordonpoints. I'll double that if you can tell me how I picked that number.

lefty. woo! go me! *punches air*

i'm left-handed for writing, but am right-handed and right-footed for pretty much everythingelse.
