jenn cass made it and david morreale didn't? bah.
yay for commonbond and jeffrey foucalt, tho.
J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Why do they Hate Russell Wolff? They never pick him and he was *WAY* better then anyone I heard from the New Artist Showcase last year! And what About pepper McGowan?
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Well, does he actually get his applications in? :) I know in the past he's had trouble getting around to it. Can't be picked if you don't apply on time! :)
J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
He did this year, we were talking about that. It bums me out. Maybe we should mount a letter writing campaign.
nate... Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
I'm all for it.
What the hell??
He's better than half the people on the MAIN stages, let alone the freakin "new artist showcase".

:P
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
FRFF is afraid of Camp Fruvous stacking the vote. :)
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Well, I dunno. I mean, I love Russell, but WA9 is at least close competition. :)
J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Becca, what the hell are you saying? First of all, We're about 9 is very talented but they are years away from being on that main stage position, they still are years off from being great song writers. Lets take Albany for example, beyond why someone would want to go to albany, why are they trying to make it? Russell is a fully realized Song writer and performer. wa9 atleast is has a stage presence, but their songs are not impressive. One day I think they will be great. But they are like cookie dough, and Russell is like a cookie! Hmmm....Cookies.....
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
no, andy, what the hell are *you* saying? wa9 rock. i think brian's well on his way to surpassing russell as a songwriter. he may be there already.
nate... Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
I'm not sure about THAT.
WA9 are a lot of fun, but they only have a couple jems, really.

Russell has a ton of very well-written songs.
Now, if he would only get a band.......
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
maybe i'm just blinded by my lust for pat klink. :)
J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago

AS a performer, wa9 is there. As musicians, they have skills in spades. As song writers, they are definatly lacking, even their better songs just don't have that punch lyrically. Russell on the other hand has learned along time ago how to get that lyrical punch. Russell is a far superior song writer. I will prove it to you one day soon!

J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago

I agree completely.
WA9 is definitely right up there with Russell...

But even so, I'd like to see them BOTH there.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Once again I closed the window when it was asking me if I wanted to post my entry. Grrrr.

I've seen Bethany Yarrow and Terrance Martin. Terrance is pretty big on the local folk scene and works with Cadence Carroll a lot so you know he has something on the ball.

Bethany Yarrow is Peter's daughter. I saw her once and liked her.
J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Peter Yarrow as in "I like Mike Clem's Beard" and was in Peter Paul and Marry's Peter Yarrow?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
That's the one. When I saw Bethany I was wondering if she was his daughter till he came up to me and asked, "Is someone sitting there?" pointing to the seat next to mine. He didnt' sit there, his friend did.
J. Andrew World Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
*taps into shelly* Did he have the mike Clem beard?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Bethany and Peter will be on WFUV this Sunday around 10 AM. John Platt aka Uncle Liquid Silk is interviewing them.

"Early bird camping opens Wednesday afternoon no later than 5PM for ticketholders with prepaid camping tickets. "

Does that mean they start letting people IN no later than 5? or that you have to BE in no later than 5?
John J. Ryan Back · 22 years ago
It means the earliest you can enter the campgrounds is 5 PM.  Of course, that hasn't stopped a lot of people from claimjumping.  Just bring a volunteer with you and don't come back. :)
danced with Lazlo Back · 22 years ago
but it says "no later" not "no earlier"
John J. Ryan Back · 22 years ago
I'm going to call up the office and put to rest this confusion once and for all.
Misch Back · 22 years ago
It's "Before 5." This is because they don't want to have to staff the front gate after 5 PM.
nate... Back · 22 years ago
*bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt* Incorrect. John called them.
John J. Ryan Back · 22 years ago
Actually, I emailed them.  Didn't want to tie up the one phone line they have there. :)
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years ago
*bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt* Incorrect.  John emailed them.  :)
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 22 years ago
From my experience last year, they let people IN by 5PM, though more likely than not, they will let you go in earlier.  But it doesn't mean you have to be there by 5PM or else you're locked out.  My friend and I were allowed into the campgrounds at about 3PM once we got our wristbands (which took a good 45 minutes of waiting time to get that even).
John J. Ryan Back · 22 years ago

Last year I got in because I had Melissa as a volunteer in my car.  So I went up and never came back down to even get a wrist band. :)

So hopefully this year I'll have a volunteer in my car again so I can go there nice and early.  If not, I'll just show up later at night on Wednesday.  I'll be there the previous weekend helping Steve Martin set up shop.

Drea Back · 22 years ago
I had to ask about this last year, as I had a *non*-volunteer in my car *g*

Leanne and I should be getting there sometime on Tues night, as I'll probably be doing an early parking shift on Wed - don't run me over! ;)
John J. Ryan Back · 22 years ago

The official answer:

Hi John,

The no later than 5P on Weds is quite literal, we will open the gates no
later than 5P. We can't always guarantee we will have enough early gate crew,
campgrounds crew, security etc to open earlier than that. But, we almost
always have managed to open by 1-2PM. We just don't want to guarantee that we
can do that.

We keep the gates open until midnight every night. No one is "shut out" if
they arrive late. They simply camp out for the night in an adjacent area near
the gate until the next morning, it's quiet and off the road and has
security. Dozens of late night arrivals do this every year. It's not a
problem and is much, much safer than trying to drive into the campgrounds and
set up at tent at that late hour. Anyone who enters in a car after full dark
requires us to have a campgrounds crewperson follow them in and monitor them
carefully until they are set for safety reasons. Hope this helps, Anne

i guess everyone was wrong about the hopeful prediction of the reee-turn of frvous for FRFF's big anniversary...

Ew. FRFF as the Fruvous return gig? I think I'd rather see it anywhere but FRFF. *shrugs*
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 22 years ago
If it makes you feel any better. Some musician, I forgot who, told me that if and when Fruvous does return it won't be at a festival.
hkath Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

And we should take their word for it because?

Gordondon son of Ethelred · 22 years ago
I'm very disappointed that there is no Cadence Carroll. She'll be there anyway as a volunteer. I hope she plays the Budgiedome.

nate... Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Yup, got mine too.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Could you send me an e-mail with all the info as to who is playing on what day?  I'd like to update that info on Budgiedome.com
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Oh, did it mention what the Saturday tribute workshop will be?
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
beatles again. maybe they'll do a better job this time.
nate... Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
again?!?! gah!

:P

laaaame.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Maybe they won't cut it short this time. Somebody screwed up last time.

They should just let the Kennedys do the whole workshop. I think Maura is Paul's love child.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

My take on the Beatles workshop last year:

I think the workshop was cut short because of the Dave Carter tribute.  All the performers wanted to rehearse their Dave Carter songs instead of the Beatles, so you got a lot of uninspired and rushed songs in the shortened workshop.  But here is my run-down of it all:

C & M Thompson - Ob-Li-Da, Ob-La-Da.  Did a good job with the harmony throughout, but not too much different.  But still fun.

Lucy Kaplansky - I'm Looking Through You.  True to the form, with a solo through into the verse.

Christopher Williams - Tomorrow Never Knows.  Probably the best of the workshop.  All the dumbek players playing (including Eddie Hartness) at the same time, with only an electric guitar the only melodic instrument.  towards the end of the song, it becomes one big drum circle.  Chris started in the wrong key, that was funny. :)

Eddie From Ohio - Nowhere Man - Mike Clem on lead, and well suited for the harmony of Robbie, Julie, and Mike.  Pete Kennedy on the guitar solo.

K & N Nields + Maura Kennedy - This Boy - More 3 part harmony.  Became "This Girl"

David Messingill - If I Fell - Played on a dulcimer.  Probably the most uninspired song of the workshop, but it was fun to supply the harmony part to it, harmonizing with a complete stranger.

Erin McKeown - In My Life - Once again, seemed rushed and thrown out there.

The Paperboys - I've Just Seen A Face - From what I understand, this is in their repetoire anyway, but man, they play it well.

The Kennedys - She Loves You - Played straight up.

Jimmy LaFave - While My Guitar Gently Weeps - This was played SO much better the previous night.

So of all the performances, we got only two that took a chance, I've Just Seen A Face and Tomorrow Never Knows.  I certainly hope they improve upon it this year.  But yes, have Pete Kennedy run the workshop again.  I bet they DO want another shot at this one, because the Dylan workshop killed the Beatles workshop hands down.

Mamalissa! Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

Erin McKeown - In My Life - Once again, seemed rushed and thrown out there.

Normally I love Erin, but I thought it was a terrible song choice for her.  If she does it this year, I think "Honey Pie" would be an awesome choice.

[*edit*] and then Mike Clem could come out and sing "Wild Honey Pie" in his "Rolling Pin" falsetto scream.

John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

Either that or When I'm 64 or Rocky Raccoon.  All of those songs are Paul's "Old-timey" songs that suit Erin's voice so well.

But Erin won't be there this year, so alas.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Honey Pie would be great. How about Blackbird?
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

Lost of artists would be great for Blackbird.  What folkie doesn't like to fingerpick?

For those of ya'll who like them... Max Germer, the original bassist for The Maggies, will be joining them on bass for a full-band set on Sunday, July 27.
