I only like tomatoes that have been turned into tomato sauce.

Mhh. tomatoes!
Slice them up, add some salt and coarsely ground black pepper, oh, and some olives, diced onion, lettuce, fetta cheese, capsicum. Toss the lot in a mix of olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice... Oops, I seem to have gotten a bit off topic here. Ok, the tomatoes available in our supermarkets look nice, but are tasteless and feel mealy. The greengrocer down the road probably gets his from his cousin. They are of irregular shape and some of them need to be left on the window sill for a little more ripening, but they taste great. I wish they were available all year round. Other than that, New Zealand tree tomatoes are tops.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I'd rather have the words there than a tomato.

I love big nummy funny-shaped rain-split juicy real garden tomatoes. Tomahtoes. Whatevah. (But never tomatoe.) They have to be from a garden or a farm market ... supermarket tomatoes are plastic. But real tomatoes, sliced ... with mozzarella and olive oil and basil and salt. MMMM. Or onsquishy white bread with mayonnaise and salt. Or on crusty garlic-rubbed lightly toasted Italian bread. Or baked with onions and zucchini and olive oil and rosemary and garlic. Or on pizza. That's heaven. And then of course there's a good tomato-based pasta sauce ... a staple in this house. Salsa's all good. I even like cream of tomato soup, but if it's the canned stuff it's GOT to be made with milk. Of course, I throw so many crackers into it it winds up being more like cracker soup. Grape tomatoes are cute and snackable, and garden-grown cherry tomatoes are quite acceptable, but supermarket or salad-bar cherry tomatoes are just gross. They're like little red ping-pong balls. Their skins are really thick. And when you bite them they squirt you. They also taste like they're rotten. And Manhattan clam chowder? That is just so, so wrong. That about summarizesmy tomato-ey opinions.
I'm too lazy to research this, but banana ketchup probably existed long before tomato ketchup, since ketchup originally was a south Asian condiment made witha variety of local fruits, spices, and pickling agent, long before Heinz made its tomato version an American staple. I think authentic ketchup must be a lotlike chutney -- and banana chutney is also really good.
i like tomato prducts, not raw tomatos. mmm sauce, ketchup pizza, mmm
Whatever tomato winds up in my bottle of pasta sauce. :)

I believe that would make me your Minister of Information. I like the sound of that.
i'm so with you on this one, my dear. my uncle used to grow the BEST tomatoes on earth. i could eat them right from the vine. grocery store tomatoes are bland and blechy and crunchy. tomatoes shouldn't be crunchy. or white. they can be green, however, sliced thin with a little batter & parmesean and pan-fried. yum. grape tomatoes are okay, i'm not a fan of cherry tomatoes. but man. a nice, room temperature juicy pulpy tomato with a little salt...heaven! havent had a good one in years, since my uncle stopped growing them. ooo. I forgot about fried green tomatoes. yum. *shudders* at white or pale-pink tomato insides. ick. I'm fortunate to live in a great area for growing tomatoes, and the ones from southern NewJersey are the cream of the crop.In good years you can even find themin local supermarkets for a few short weeks. This wasn't a good year though -- too cool and damp. Usually I plant a dozen vines and wind up giving hundreds of pounds of excess to the local"share the harvest" food bank, but this year I didn't get around to planting, and given the weather that wasn't much of a loss. The local harvest was quite poor. I missed eating good tomatoes, though.

okay, so there are more tomatoes in the world than the ones you would usually see at the supermarket. How about Heirloom tomatoes?? Many of thoes have a very unique taste, and are the most wonderfull shape and color! Some are purple-ish and striped. Some are sqatt and have lots of ridges. Heirloom tomatoes are not USUALLY found at supermarkets. They are grown from select seeds that are often not hearty enough to survive mass cultivation or a grocery store shelf. A market near me sells them at times, and sometimes, I will get a few just to try. If you have a specialty market, try heirloom tomatoes. Lots of variety, not just plain red, and a treat for the palate and eye!! Also, as a note, try this with apples too!!! You will never eat a red delicious again!! :) And, most of the time, the tomatoes that make tomatoe sauce, are plum tomatoes. :)
How about Killer Tomatoes? They can kick the rain flies of Killer Tents.
I too am a tomato lover, and my parents used to grow the most fantastic tomatoes - all different kinds. My favorite is when they're still warm from the sun. As for green tomatoes, any other Pickled Tomato fans out there?
