Discussion: How many languages do you speak?
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 19 years, 9 months ago
Again?

Okay, well, I speak English fluently and some broken Chinese (mainly with my parents). I can sorta speak small bits of German and Spanish. I wouldn't consider myself fluent in either of those languages, so I picked two.
lawrence · 19 years, 9 months ago
If you interpret 'speak' literally, I suppose some might be able to answer 0, but in the broader sense of the term, anyone able to answer the question cannot possibly answer 0.

Not happy with the poll questions or options? Then let's see you do better, really! Suggest a poll!

er, sorry. reflex. :)
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
well I have, but Josh just doesn't like my polls, I guess.

I can speak english in a formal setting(like school), but In conversation I kinda speak a mumbled version of english with odd phrasing and the occasional new word.

And since a couple of my friends said it took them a couple of months to understand what I'm saying, I guess that counts as another language-
Jºnªthªn Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I did, so there. Truthfully answer... no. Possibly answer... yes.
Bender Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
which chinese dialect?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I'm not sure I put in 0 as an option. I think that Josh might have added it. I know I didn't mean to. I thought of saying "foreign languages" in which case it would have made sense.

He just doesn't like you. Your sweet ass is competition for his. :)
sheryls · 19 years, 9 months ago
i've learned 4 other languages but i cant speak any of them to save my life. i can say a few functional things in russian and japanese, probably get around with spanish and if i really dig deep i can come up with a few hebrew phrases.

unfortunately, due to my lack of fluency in any of them, in order to answer truthfully i had to choose "one" :P
caroline: tired. · 19 years, 9 months ago
I speak english. I'm learning french, but i can't say more than "my name is caroline." and various foods, sports, and the weather. oh, and i know things at the airport too. like a boarding pass.

if pig latin counts, then yes to that, and partial ubbi dubbi.
siobhan's a londoner · 19 years, 9 months ago
I speak English, I used to speak German to the level of a three year old and I'm learnig Icelandic with Fil so we can make people think we are talking about them behind their backs. You know we look at someone pointedly whilst talking about the weather or just repeatedly saying hello in ahocked voice
"Komdu Saell?" (hello in masculine form)
"Komdu Saell!" (see above)
"Jaeja!" (wow)
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
primarily Cantonese with some bastardizations here and there. Some people who speak that dialect can understand me, others are like "huh?"
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 19 years, 9 months ago

I am fluent in over six million forms of communication, and can readily...

Um, nevermind.
Bender Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I'm learning Mandarin.

I keep making retarded mistakes like saying, "I'm very cloth."

goovie is married! · 19 years, 9 months ago
english, and some french and spanish, and a very little bit of italian.
sheryls Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
in japanese the words for "hate" and "beautiful" are really, really close. so you could mean to tell someone they are beautiful, and instead tell them how hateful they are :P
caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
What I learned in french today-
pcheur = fisherman
pcheur = peach tree
uhm....yeah. so you could be like "my dad's a peach tree" or "i'm going to go cut down that fisherman."
the french are weirdos.
nitsita Back · 19 years, 9 months ago

..um.

peach tree is pcher...

but yes. we're weirdos

caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 9 months ago

"Caroline-chan wa kirei desu!" - "Caroline is beautiful!"

"Caroline-chan wa kirai desu!" - "I hate Caroline!"

caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I've heard both. In english, that is. :)

and...wow. that took about 5 times to see the difference.
Cali Back · 19 years, 9 months ago

I can pretty much speak English, some basic French, and I can completely understand Marathi when spoken to me, and can answer with some basic words.
lawrence Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
"Caroline-chan wa kirai desu!" - "I hate Caroline!"

Actually, doesn't that say 'Caroline is hate'?

'I hate Caroline' would be 'Caroline-chan o kiramasu.'

lovely that we've picked such pleasant verbs to demonstrate this confusion. :)
A girl named Becca Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Doesn't mean peach tree, as Nitsa said, but if I remember correctly it does mean "sinner."

Fishermen are apparently evil in France.
A girl named Becca Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I'm not!
A girl named Becca · 19 years, 9 months ago
English, French, Spanish, and German (in order of my learning them). Though in some cases I have trouble separating the 4 and actually only speak 1 language that is some combination of them. I thought about including Java but I don't "speak" it and, in any case, I'm by no means fluent. :)

Also, if all goes according to plan this summer (i.e. if I pass the necessary tests and such), I will be teaching Spanish in the fall. How creepy is that?
