Top 50 Driving Songs

   Discussion: Top 50 Driving Songs
iPauley · 21 years, 8 months ago
This year is the centennial of the first cross-country automobile trip in the U.S., and to help mark the occasion, Berklee College of Music in Boston has released a list of the 50 all-time top driving songs, as compiled by a professor there.

What do you all think? What were the best ones he picked, and what did he leave off that should have been there?

(His top 50 were all songs about cars or driving, but I personally don't care -- what makes a good driving song for you?)

I love driving songs. There are songs that I have to pump the volume up all the way when I hear them in my car. Here are a few.

  • Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf

  • Running Down a Dream - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

  • Born to Run - Bruce Spingsteen (actually lots of songs by the Boss are great driving songs)

  • Fun Fun Fun - The Beach Boys (See Springsteen Comment)

  • Get in the Car - Some weird guys

  • The William Tell Overture - Rossini

  • Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

  • Maybeline - Chuck Berry

I like songs that I can just belt out.

My list would include some nice Billy Joel, Beatles (why wasn'tBaby You Can Drive My Car in the top 50?), Kansas (Carry on Wayward Son), CCR, Queen (Bicycle, Crazy Little Thing Called Love), Great Big Sea, Paul Simon, Barenaked Ladies, Spirit of the West, ... (K-tel moment) ... and many more!

I like to have a varietyof music available, depending on my mood and the traffic situation I may need to be hyped up or mellowed out. Usually I want something I can sing along with but sometimes instrumental jazz that I can scat to.

"Get in the Car" - duh.
"Go", "Animal" "Glorified G" - Pearl Jam
Primus' Pork Soda... (the whole album)
The first Squirrel Nut Zippers album.
"circles", "Moon Sammy", "Uh, Zoom Zip" and.. many others - Soul Coughing
"Blew", "Love Buzz"... umm.. most of Nirvana's stuff.
Ditto most of FoW's stuff.

Wow, I really need to either make a bunch of driving mixes, or we need to turn this into a "Top 50 Driving Albums" thread.

:D
