Jason's quick mini-faq: 1 - What's Bit Torrent? - Bit Torrent is a peer-to-peer network to share content... in this case, Fruvous shows. Bit Torrent software is free, the downloads are typically very fast (if you have broadband cable/dsl/t1/etc), and the client is NOT spyware. Since the content can be legally shared, the RIAA won't be knocking on your door. One more important thing to note is that Bit Torrents are fast because all the folks downloading simultaniously are sharing the pieces they've received with others who are also downloading the same content. The upside is that they're fast when lots of people are on at once. The downside is that they effectively 'die' after a while... typically a few days or more. 2 - What's an SHN? SHN is a data compression format that compresses WAV audio files approximately 2:1. Unlike MP3 compression which is "lossy", SHN files can be extracted to WAV format which are absolutely identical to the original. In this case, you're downloading CD-quality audio in exactly the same format it was recorded in on the original DAT tapes. Burn it to CD and you've got what I have... no loss at all. Upside - super quality. Downside - still kinda big files to download. 3 - What software do I need? You need two basic pieces: A) a Bit Torrent client. The official client can be downloaded from bitconjurer.org (link above) or for better results (especially for dealing with multiple torrents at once) check out either ABC http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/download.htmlor TorrentStorm http://www.torrentstorm.com/pages/downloadfile.php?downloadid=2 B) software to decompress SHNs to WAV files (so you can burn them to CDR using any popular CD burning software... hopefully you've got that already! Check out etree's links at http://www.etree.org/software.html In general, for Windows PCs, I would recommend mkwACT. If you happen to use Nero for burning CDRs, there's a plugin available to let you burn audio directly from the SHN files (decompressing "on-the-fly"). http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org/files/nxmyshn.zip There are also SHN plugins for popular players like Winamp so you can just play the files right from your PC if you want without decompressing. That's it for now... more shows comin' soon... one "partially untraded" gem tonight. </tease> - Jason
what do you mean "they effectively 'die' after a while...."?
Since Bit Torrents are a peer-to-peer sharing network,at least one person/computer needs to be "seeding" the show (content) in order for someone else to download it. Speaking broadly, you're only seeding as long as you keep the SHN content on your machine, and keep the Bit Torrent client window open. Unlike some other peer-to-peer networks, it's VERY clear what content you're sharing with others at any given time. Folks just don't keep sharing for very long after they've completed downloading... the kindest ones might keep a window open for several days, so some torrents may go strong for a couple weeks, but generally the content becomes unavailable a few days after it is announced. Of course, someone, be it the original seeder or any other kind person, could purposely keep the torrent alive for MUCH longer, but it's not common. Upshot... if you see a Bit Torrent announced and the content looks appealing, jump on it soon or it may be hard to get.

I'm home for 5 days and can't leech any torrents until I get home. *siiiiiigh*
Don't worry, Ellen. I plan on keeping them up that long, anyway... And if I can't, I could probably be convinced to send you CDs. :-)
Hee. Thanks so much. I take this as a belated christmas gift:) Worked like a charm (Bittorrent always does;-)
Please keep these up until I get back home next week! I want these shows, and I'll be willing to leave a Torrent window open on my machine for a while for others.
No problem at all. I've intended to do this anyway:) Enjoy!
Can we set up a Bit-Torrent forum on this site so that many of us can upload shows to be downloaded? Many of us would love to have Fruvous shows we don't currently have.
Well, we could set up our own tracker, but the nice thing about using etree's tracker is that the shows get exposed to a much wider audience. The show I put on etree got about twice as many downloads as the one that was on another tracker. Also, etree's will allow anyone to download the torrent file from their website. Were you suggesting our own tracker, or just the ability to upload .torrent files to be downloaded, regardless of where they're being tracked? You're welcome to use my tracker at acousticville.org if you want... or another copy to be installed elsewhere like on fruhead.com or fruvous.com. - Jason
Is it at all possible for Mac Users to get a hold of these things? :o(
Yup, the Mac version of BitTorrent works beautifully. Actually it seems to work better than my PC version does. ;)
Glad to see some mac users out there. After getting the Bittorrent file, try using xAct for decoding:

According to my experiences TorrentStorm works way better on a PC ;-)

Decoded fine with Carbon Shorten under Mac OS X v10.3.
W00t! Thanks, I was at this show. Do you happen to have the other night of the two night engagement (it was either the 24th or the 26th)?
It was July 26th, 2000. It was by a stroke of luck I was even at that show, even Murray remembered that I supposed to have a band gig that night, but it was suddenly cancelled, which allowed me to go. I've only been to 4 Fruvous shows, so I'm very happy I was at both of these shows. Within these two shows you pretty much get the entire live repetoire of Moxy Fruvous. I believe I counted just4 repeat songs from both nights (Heatseeker, Pisco, Michigan, Disco Bargainville). How many bands do you know that can do that (Or at least CHOOSE to do that)

Josh, any chance you could set up a new forum if these BitTorrents are going to keep coming through? Trying to skim through this thread to make sure I've caught up with all of the posts so that I don't miss any, I thought it would be a lot easier if there was a new topic started for each one in their own dedicated place.
This is a great thing and I hope it continues. If I had any shows worth seeding I would, but I doubt I have anything that no one else ever taped. That and I know minidisc is frowned upon. ;)
Put 'em in the Fruvous forum, that's what it's there for. :)
And yeah, this is wonderful. Thanks for doing this, guys!
Well you missed my point completely, but I guess you don't want to make a new forum and I can respect that descision. :)
I think it was a meeting halfway thing. Each torrent can have its own thread in the fruvous forum so they're still more clear/obvious than this thread. Doesn't quite make sense if non-fru content starts milling around in this group though, but I dunno if that's out of scope anyway.
Hrm.
See, I put mine in the main thread so as to consolidate to one area.
I think it makes more sense than spreading them around.... what do ya'll think?
Look at it this way, if enough shows get published to make each having its own thread a problem, then it's a good problem to have. :)
Yeah, good point... I'll put my next ones in their own threads. About the only thing we don't have on this forum is the ability to upload the .torrent file, but using etree or other trackers like it makes that a non issue. :) Up next: 12/30/99 - Iron Horse 2/21/98 - Fruhead Convention
were you still thinking of redoing 10/30/98, or shall I seed that?
This is a great thing and I hope it continues. If I had any shows worth seeding I would, but I doubt I have anything that no one else ever taped. That and I know minidisc is frowned upon. ;)
How about the Pawling show from April '99?
Am I really the only one who has that?
Well, I have should have CD's of it somewhere. Unless I'm mistaken though, I believe you were the only taper.
True, there weren't many "regulars" at that show, were there...
I was there! And while I'd been to a bunch of shows, I was not a "regular" at the time. I think Kat was there too - we figured this out later. During off-mic Spidey, Mike grabbed someone's tape-recorder and screamed into it. It was Kat's.
As for the Mike Errico in the bar thing... they did this little song "Mike, where were ya?" Dave went to the bathroom a bit later, and they sang "Dave, where were ya?" to which he replied "I was checkin' the NASDAQ!" But that's not what I initially heard...if you switch the "S" and the "D" - well, I kinda thought it was a cancer self-exam kind-of thing.
I have never told anyone about this.
...if you switch the "S" and the "D"
*snorts cranberry juice out nose*
hahahahaha
Hmmm then you weren't too far away from me, because i think I was at a table one row closer to the stage and slightly below that incident. :)
I don't even see that on the list of shows from fruvous.com
Well that was an interesting show with interesting circumstances.
The original book date was the same date as one of the Westbeth shows in NYC. Fruvous never announced it and I only found out about it because I was attending a show at the venue and they had it advertised. I bought tickets anyway even though I figured it would get cancelled.
Of course it turned out that it was accidentally double-booked and there were misunderstandings and whatnot. So the show was postponed. But then Dave got sick and the show got postponed again.
By the time the show actually happened, it was long sold out mostly to locals and members of the venue (Towne Crier).
Oh and the opener was Mike Errico, and they called him out from the bar (which is on the other side of a wall there) during their set and jammed with him for like 25 minutes.
well, I have no interest in errico... but, I say post it!
:)
It's clearly a rarity.
The only problem I have right now is that I have no audio editing software for my Mac yet and precious little time for a project like that right now. :(
Well that and I have absolutely no idea where the minidiscs are. Though I'm sure I could find them. The CDs I made back when the show came out were okay though so if I can find THOSE, we might be in business. A few other people have them as well, I think.
Still, it'd probably be worth it for someone with a better digital sound card than a SBLive Platinum to have a go at transfering them. Anyone wants to do it, I'll clone the MDs and send them your way.
iLife '04 comes out in 9 days... GarageBand looked pretty sweet. It doesn't appear to be designed with levels/tracking in mind, but I suspect it can do it no problem.
Of course that doesn't help any with time/money issues or locating the MDs. ;) If you do find them, I can do a clean conversion for ya.
Oh I ordered iLife '04 moments after it showed up at the Apple Store. :)
The discs have been located and Nate and I are going to work on getting them transferred.
I don't even see that on the list of shows from fruvous.com
That's because I'm a bonehead. The actual date of the show was 4/26/2000
I'll continue to make new threads for the new shows I seed. I think doing that will help organize things better.
It was one of the two Fruvous shows I've attended that you have. :) 10/31/98 would also be pretty sweet. Regardless of what you do, thanks for this! I've been sharing all of these shows until the number of downloaders drops to zero for a long period of time.
Funny... I just pulled 2/6/99 out last night and it sounds awesome. Save for some occasional talkers and the brief fight scene ("you wanna go?!?") I couldn't really ask for more. Should have it ready soon enough...
As for the 10/30+31/98 shows, Nate and I recorded them to 8-track digital recorders and I did a rough mixdown through an analog mixer a few years ago. I've never been particularly pleased with the results and plan to do a proper digital mixdown on a PC shortly.
