Poll: My favorate version of the song is by...

How many covers are their of this song.  It's a Richard Thompson song and  I know Butch Ross and The Mammals have covered it and I think some chick with a guitar (perhaps Dar?).   Are their anymore that are floating out there?

Ok now that that is out of the way; you didn't mention the most successful cover of it; the Del McCrory Band. It was named bluegrass song of the year. Yes they did a bluegrass version.

Before all these covers came out I tried to talk the Kennedys into doing a version of it. Richard Thompson is their favorite performer. They thought it was too closely associated with RT. Too bad, I think it would work great as a man/woman dialogue.

So have I mentioned that it is the greatest song ever written?

I think it was FRFF '99 or '00 where I heard some female sing it.  Maybe it was Cry Cry Cry.  Maybe it was Dar solo.  I honestly don't remember, but the first time I heard it was by a chick with a guitar.

There's more than one woman who has covered it, but the best known one that I'm aware of is Mary Lou Lord.

A search of my hard drive shows that the document "JOINT APPENDICES for the 2005 BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARDS FOR RESIDENTIAL AND NONRESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS" from the California Energy Commission (don't ask) has all the words "1952," "Vincent," "Black," and "Lightning" in it.... For some reason I thought I had a live Dan Bern cover of it but I couldn't find it.

By a performer.  "Never Turning Back" was sung on the mainstage at about 7:30.  I think it was one of the staff members.
