I was checking something on AMG when I decided to look at their entry on Fruvous. It listed these artists as being similar:

  • Great Big Sea
  • Too Much Joy
  • Size 14
  • Presidents of the United States of America
  • Crash Test Dummies
  • The Bobs
  • Ben Folds
  • Cake
  • Ween
  • Ed's Redeeming Qualities

Some of these are the usual suspects, GBS for example. Others I never heard of. Does anyone know the bands in italics?

Presidents of the United States of America

Do you know the Weird Al parody "Gump?" That was based on their song "Lump" and they also sang the song "Peaches."

o/~ movin' to the country...gonna eat a lot of peaches o/~

Sadly I own that CD Single. ;)

Gump=Great song.

I heard peaches was about oral sex.

Most things are.
Dan Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Most things are good songs, or most things are about oral sex?
Bender Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
That's for you to decide.

I bought the CASSETTE single!
Phoenix Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Oooh. There were singles on cassettes. Who knew?
Agent Scully Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Called The "Cassingle". :)

My first Cassingle was The Look by Roxette in 1989. =D

i know of ed's redeeming qualities. in sensibility, i'd say they're most like the bobs. but with instrumentation & without singing voices.

Too Much Joy was a fantastic band, but nothing like Fruvous. They were geek rock, like Weezer, but more rock. They didn't do much with harmonies, but did do a lot with contrasting voices and call-and-answer styling. The only real comparison to Fruvous is that both groups use a lot of words.

TMJ compares more to Sugar, Material Issue, and Fountains of Wayne than to Fruvous.

is freakin awesome.... but... I see *no* relation to fruvous.

As far as cake... they're brilliant... but... I think of them more as a combination of FoW and TMBG.... with added talent. :)

I'm lovin' Cake at the moment.

But I agree... not really Frvous-y.
lawrence Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
ok, so I'm hearing a lot of recommendations for Cake, but the only song of theirs I've ever heard is that 'Going the Distance' one, which irritates me and I'm sure is not at all representative of their style otherwise.

what songs should I listen to to get a better idea of what they sound like? I mean, the description as a combination of FoW and TMBG has certainly piqued my curiosity. :)
nate... Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
oh god, yeah.

the distance is not representative.

I would suggest... hrm... lemme look here.

No Phone, Never There, Frank Sinatra, Short Skirt/Long Jacket, Daria

If you can listen to those and not be hooked, I think you probably wouldn't like them. :)

OH!!!

And their cover of "I Will Survive" is freaking awesome. :)

For me it was Comfort Eagle that first got me listening to Cake.
nate... Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
the album as a whole? or the song?

Nik Chaikin Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
the song, i saw a music video someone had done to it on albinoblacksheep.com
nate... Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
oo. linkage?

caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
here ya go.

i thought that music video was rather... crap. but the album was in my stereo all afternoon.
goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
if it's the music that irritates you about "the distance," then i don't know what to tell you, because a lot of cake sounds very similar. but if you want to try some songs, the first two i'd recommend to you are "short skirt, long jacket," and "sheep go to heaven."

A band worth checking out, though not listed on AMG, is The Arrogant Worms. In fact, they list Fruvous as one of their links on their website ("Moxy Fruvous... The original Bad Boys of Folk!"). Checked them out over the weekend - and you can hear similarities. Live Bait is a good intro - and you can get a very good dose of Canadian culture of which you can never get too much...
Phoenix Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
The Worms rule. And in this time of year nothing can beat their Christmas Turkey album!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Even better was the Arrogant Worms with Moxy. They played at the Bethleham musikfest in 2004. Mike in the worms was replaced by Mike Ford who brought Dave Matheson along with him. Not only was it a great show but we learned that Mike and Dave were Moxy which implies that Murray and Jian were Fruvous. That means the name of the band would have been Fruvous Moxy reading from left to right from the audience. Since it was Moxy Fruvous we are obviously meant to read from right to left as in Hebrew. Does that mean that Moxy Fruvous is Jewish?
Mamalissa! Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Yes, Gordon. It means that Moxy Fruvous is Jewish.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Orthodox? Conservative, Reformed, Reconstructionist, or non-observant?
Mamalissa! Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
It's "Reform," not "Reformed."

If you're gonna insist on labels, get 'em right.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
OK its Reform but then they have to drink Ice Tea, not Iced Tea :-)
goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
yes. there are lots of worms fans here. fhdc is where i first found out about them, in fact. live bait is great.

Heard about the Worms on AMMF.

Bought all their albums during Frucon II in February 1999 in Toronto.
