Black and White TV

The rotary phone discussion made me think about Black& White TVs. I remember getting our first color set. I think I was about 14 or 15. I still watched a black and white till I was 21 or so.
I don't really recall us having a B&W TV. Besides those little portables with batteries. I do remember having those huge dials that went chunka-chunka-chunka as you switched around channels. And remotes to the VCR with cords. And having to worry about UHF and VHF.
I still use a chunka-chunka style console set. My two newer sets both fell due to lightning strikes.I use a cable box for actual channel changing, but I still have to chunka-chunka when I hook up the old game systems. :-)
We never had one in our house, but my grandmother had one and I watched it quite a bit as a child.
I remember when I was pretty young I associated "black-and-white" with "boring" (maybe because boring things were often on at my grandmother's house?) and tended to tune out anything in B&W. So it wasn't until I was 13 that I realized that the characters from the beginning of The Wizard of Oz had any relationship to the people in Oz. Heh.
Seeing The Wizard of Oz for the first time in color was such a revelation. In B&W you don't get that amazing moment when she opens the door to Oz and everything is in technicolor. You also don't get the joke about The Horse of a Different Color.
I loved Creature Features. They even used one of my Creature Quotes; "The Mummy had no daddy.
I also loved Chiller Theatre with the great six fingered hand coming out of the ground

I am aware of the existance of black & white television sets....I have never seen one, though.
*ducks*
Yes there was, it was around when I was a preteen. It was just not available where you lived. It wasn't available where I lived till I was in my thirties.
