So who else here had TVs that weren't remote control? I got a really early remote control TV in 1963. My parents got it for me when I broke my leg. The remote was purely mechanical. When you pressed the button a hammer struck a metal cylinder tuned to a precise note. The TV had a sensor that would hear the tone. There were two buttons, One controled the volume and turned it on and off. Each click would make it softer in steps till the TV went off. The other made the channel go up by one.
We didn't have a remote for the TV until I was around ten.
Our VCR, that we had until I was in high school, had a remote, but we rarely used it because it was connected by a wire (like an NES controller).
Woot! We had a Zenith TV with an ultrasonic remote that we got from my dad's cousin in the mid 70's. It was a gigantic beast for its day; I think it had a 25" screen or some such. I loved playing with the remote. Ping! Ping!
Sadly, it died a horrible death one night and was replaced with a 13" portable on a rolling cart. I remember rolling it up to the edge of the couch to watch my Saturday morning cartoons.
Today, I have my four device remotes, which I eschew in favor of the 3 universals. The only time I use the CD recorder remote is when I'm recording from LP and need to insert new-track markers.
My main remote is a univeral RCA, prior generation to this. I lurves it.
I was the remote control.
I don't think we got a remote until 1986 and that was for the Cable Box.
Our TV came from a Hotel sale (because we couldn't afford one from the store - previous TV was B&W until around 1976-77) and had dials on it until it died in 1987.
Not only did we have tochange the channel by hand, we had to go outside and rotate the antenna. :-) It was the only time I was allowed to climb the fence, so I never complained much.
heh.. yeah, I had to do that too.
One kid would stay inside and watch the TV.
The other would be outside turning the antenna pole by hand.
"better... better... bett..WAIT! Go back!!"
A universal remote for the TV and VCR, and the remote for the DVD player.
And if I didn't have a generic DVD player that the universal remote can't find, I think we'd just have the single remote.
My Logitech remote replaced 8 remotes - TV, HDTV receiver, satellite receiver, audio system, VCR, DVD, air conditioning, and fan. I wish it could control the lights and open the door for the dogs...
Between my room, the livingroom, and my roommate's room, we have about 11 or so.
tv, vcr, dvd, stereo and...er, my fan. :D yes my fan has a remote. yes i'm lazy.
i also have remote controls for the 6 disc changer in my car on the back of my steering wheel, but that's not really *a* remote as much as it is a feature.
tv,dvd, airconditioning...now I need a remote for my computer...
d'oh!
Right, the one for my computer....
So 12.
I don't like you.
Oh yeah!
In my room there's 7: A/C, DVD, Stereo, VCR, TV, Cable, and a Universal one that is still programmed to work with stuff at my parents' apartment.
In the living room, there are at least 4, maybe 5. One each for the TV, VCR, and stereo? and two remotes for the Cable box (which was leftover from Jill's move).
So 11-12, unless I'm missing some in the other bedrooms, which is very possible.

i tend to end up with no remote for most tv's b/c i throw them when i get mad. so for awhile my family replaced them with universal ones... but i broke those too. so now theres one in my room, one in my bro's room, and one in the living room for the DVD player. i have 3 remotes in my house.
I broke our VCR remote once. My dad made me fix it. I got an object lesson in electronics care and electronics repair, plus I learned not to bounce remotes off the floor because the batteries died. :-)
My TV still has dials, but that's because I lost my newer ones (mfg. 1991 and 1997) to lightning. The 1985 model just didn't care.
So, there's no remote for the TV, but there are 6 remotes in the house. Maybe 8, unless I actually tossed the ex-TV remotes at the last move.
I don't have any of my very own, but I think there are 4 in the house. One for the DVD/VCR, that also works the tv, two upstairs, (tv and vcr separate) and one for the stereo downstairs, which is on its last legs. I wish i had one for my stereo...it's annoying to have to get up from wherever i'm sitting to push a button.

I picked up a Sony Universal Commander remote that had been put on clearance at CompUSA. It is now programmed for my receiver, my tv, dvd player and VCR.
The only downside is that the unit is a bit older and didn't have codes for some of the units. (Including the Sony receiver which uses a new codeset). Had to have the remote use its "Learn" function to pick up a bunch of the signals.
