Favorite Monarch

As long as we are talking about favorite presidents, how about favorite monarchs? Mine is not the King of Spain, but rather Elizabeth I of England. I don't really approve of the way she treated Edmond Blackadder but other than that she was great.

he was groomed by Franco to take over as head of state and to maintain the authoritarian government model that was Franco's legacy... the monarchy was restored in 1975 one month before the death of Franco... upon Franco's death, however, Juan Carlos immediately turned around and instituted democratic reforms and took the role of ruling, non-governing monarch, relinquishing most of his power for the sake of his nation and his people. Communist leader Santiago Corillo mockingly called him "Juan Carlos the Brief" predicting that the monarchy would be swept away along with fascism, but after an attempted coup in 1981 which threatened to derail the process of democratization, during which Juan Carlos called for unambiguous support of the military leaders and the people for the legitimate democratic government, the same Communist leader emotionally cried out to television audiences "God save the king!" The nation is so enamored of and devoted to its king that it is said of many Spaniards that they are not monarchists but "JuanCarlists."

Excellent point. I hadn't thought of him, but he probably gets my vote too. For some reason when I was trying to come up with monarchs I was stuck on the historical track. But yeah, Juan Carlos. Good call.

So far it looks like Prince Felipe should be pretty cool, too. :)
