Poll: What do you eat with your phosphate?

thank you. it is a hoagie. don't even try to say it isn't because it is and you know it is! so there! :)

I like the fact that there are regional differences in the names that we have for things like sandwiches and soft drinks. I think it gives our culture character. I don't think that any name is better than another. But I still voted for "Sub" (because that's what I call it) and "sodey pop" (Not because that's what I call it, but because it's so darn funny.)

I still think the words still all refer to slight variations in the sandwiches. although "submarine" and "sub" and, to some degree, "torpedo" simply refer to the shape of the bread that they all seem to share.

also, as a result, submarine makes the most sense, since the others appear to just be arbitrarily created words and don't describe the product.

that said, I still voted for hoagie because that's what they are in Philadelphia, where they make the best ones. :)

Phosphate, I believe, is a milkshake. I learned that word from The Music Man when Shirly Jones sits down in the ice cream shop and asks for a "Strawberry phosphate, please." I turn to my mommy and say "What the hell is a phosphate?" Sounds poisonous if you ask me.

Oddly enough, these are different. Have you ever had a sub that was baked? How about a grinder that wasn't baked? This isn't another pop vs. soda... and Grinders win out, no matter your regional differences.

at least, in toledo, we have subs, but grinders come from Mancinos. (at least, the best ones in town do) and they're baked. yum. yum yum, the grilled chicken grinder is to die for.

i'll third this one. they're "subs" in ohio, but our local grinder shop (bellacinos) is extra yummy. and yes, they're baked.

Huh.. that's the first I've heard of grinders being specifically hot.... you have to ask for them hot around here if you want it.

But, it's always been grinders for me..... though subs is acceptable.

And, sandwiches in a wrap were always "strollers".

Well I can't speak about non-baked grinders, but I've had *plenty* of baked subs. I worked in a place where we baked subs.

I eat a sub, though I'm in grinder country now, so I've learned to say that in order to be understood.

Bah, screw that! :) I'm a subber in a grinder country and I never bow down! People understand sub just fine, especially with the insertion of Subway into our region. Fight the power! Stand up for your sub roots! (Uh. Um. But still say soda. *grin*)

no way, yo! Subway doens't sell ground up F-grade meat! The stuff is pretty darn good and not as health-murdering as taco bell. And when I make them, there is NOTHING better. NOOOOOOOOOTHHHHHHHHHHHHHIN! =-O Speaking of which, I'm totally going home tomorrow and making myself a sandwich there. :D

they understand, but they giggle. at least the ones at my job do. :)

i prefer sammich!!! i manage a sub shop, but eat grinders every day. so there!

isn't it "po boy" I've never seen "poor boy" even though I know that's the origin...

it's po boy... but all the po boy's i've ever seen around here were really just open faced sandwhiches, and always baked... and even so... it's still sub :0)

oddly enough, i've actually seen it written poor boy...but only in one place, the college dining hall...and that hardly counts as the authority on anything...at all...

Everyone now is familiar with the use of term Sub because of the popularity of the Subway sandwich restaurant chain. Jian would call this an appalling case of cultural homogenization. I have hotten used to saying sub because the only place I generally eat such sandwiches now is at Subway, but for this poll I voted Hero because that's what the meatball sandwich at Grabsteins Deli in Canarsie Brooklyn was called. That's my heritage and I'm sticking to it. Hmph.

Oh, about the sub <-> subway thing... I don't know if that's true. It's just a speculative theory, but it made my argument sound good and gave me an excuse to sneak in some fruvous content, eh?

In Toronto and surrounding cities, I can only ever recall eating aformentioned sandwich at 4 places...Subway, Mr. Sub, Sub Xpress, and Quizno's Subs. All these places seem to have a common theme with their names...everyone I know here calls it a sub. To me, the word 'Hoagie' sounds kinda like a form of mucus. And I've never heard of anyone calling it a grinder, torpedo, or hero. Ah, sheltered Canadian.

And about being a sheltered Canadian... well, the only culture you people have is gotten from us through the corporate filters which carry it over the boarder. That's why you guys are so obsessed with our "evil corporate empire"... cause that's where you get all your stuff from. :)

ok, so, given this discussion, I was getting kind of hungry for one of these sandwiches. unfortunately, in the DC area, we're pretty much stuck with the chains, which means either Subway or Quizno's. keep in mind, though, that neither of these places invented the term "sub," so I hardly think the word's popularity can be considered cultural homogenization. the chains used the word originally because they knew people would recognise it and know what it meant.

anyway.

since I hate Subway, I decided to try Quizno's today, as there is also one walking distance from my apartment. and I found it surprisingly good. not special, by any standards, since chain food is still largely uncreative and non-unique, but quite tasty, which, in the end, is what really matters. and more surprising, still, was the fact that they didn't skimp on any part of the sandwich (I couldn't even fit my mouth around the whole thing, and that was after it had been wrapped and unwrapped) and that it looked remarkably like it did in the picture, considering it had been pressed down when wrapped.

now, if I lived in Philadelphia or any other place with good local sandwich culture, what I did would be considered a criminal act. but here, we have to take what we can get. :)

yeah, I've heard good things about quizno's... even though I've never even SEEN one personally.

But, it should definitely be a crime to get a sandwich from subway.

I'd sooner eat from McDonalds... at least they have the distinct flavor of CRAP food... rather than no flavor at all.

I'm not sure about that - I think I'd pick Subway over Taco Bell, for example. my main complaints at Subway are that there's no "default" way to get a sandwich, so you always have to choose what you want on it, which isn't good for those of us who aren't great at constructing sandwiches. and that the sandwiches are so thin and soggy. the Quizno's bread stayed nice and crisp, but soft enough to not be crumbly, the entire time.
