Discussion: Do you have a cell phone?
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 20 years ago
I have both. the land line was really useful during the blackout. I used to think that never needed a cell phone. Then I got one, and now I get antsy when I don't have it with me.

And, is it me or did we do this poll already? It could easily be me.
A.J. · 20 years ago
But I'm thinking of dropping the landline in favor of VOIP. I have some reliability concerns, but with the cell phones as backup maybe that doesn't matter. It would be hella cheaper.
lawrence · 20 years ago
I pretty much only use my cell phone for long distance when I'm at home, and I only turn it on (or bring it with me, even) out of the house when I need to arrange plans.

I hate talking on it, and I much prefer the comfortable size of regular phones, despite their not-exactly-ergonomic-anymore designs.
stealthlori Back · 20 years ago

ditto. mine turns itself on when there's an incoming call, but i never initiate its useat home unless i'm trying to reach steve on his. (shared account with free calls between our phones.) i don't even use it for long distance that much, because i have issues with the signal getting weak and voices sounding faint. and if it's the rare occasion when i don't have any sound issues going on, the person on the other end usually does.

for me the cell is mainly a safety precaution when i'm travelling, and a way to touch base if i'm out running errands and need to get hold of someone to let them know i'll be late or whatever. it is not a prominent feature in daily life.

of course, most days i'd be perfectly happy living without a land line, too. :D

I really expected many more people who quit the landline & went wireless. ;-) I haven't had a landline in what seems like years and don't miss it at all.At work, most of my friends communicate through either texting or just calling to check on things... it's faster than email most of the time. *shrugs*

Same here.... haven't had a landline in about 4 years now.

I've never looked back.

It's an outdated and obsolete technology.

:)
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years ago
That's a bit much. It's not obsolete yet. Especially won't be obsolete while there are still places you can't get celphone signals. My celphone reception is great everywhere BUT home...so using it as my actual phone line is impractical.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
Ahh, see, I have yet to find a place (other than some backroads in VT) where I don't have signal... so I have no such problems.

Heck, I even have 4 to 5 bars at falcon ridge. :)

ETA: I can even use it in my BASEMENT.... (just went to try)... so... I have no use for landlines...
That said, however, I can see using landlines if you're in one of the rare places that doesn't have cell coverage... like rural maine... or the northeast territory of VT.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years ago

I also think land lines won't become obsolete until you can plug and play whatever handset you want into your cell plan, y'know? If I want to use my little portable flip phone? Enable that for the wireless plan. If I'm home and want to use a different phone, enable that for the wireless plan.

I think between near-universal coverage and absolute flexibility of handsets...that would be the point at which I truly agreed landlines were obsolete. Because coverage and comfort truly are roadblocks for some people. Not for you, obviously, but you aren't the only customer that dictates obsolescence. *grin*

nate... Back · 20 years ago
you aren't the only customer that dictates obsolescence.

Clearly.

;D

But yeah, handsets aren't an issue for me... I have always preferred headsets... and those are interchangable between all phones... land or cell... so... I haven't had a problem there in years. :)

sheryls Back · 20 years ago
no land line here. 3 cell phones though :D 1 is mine, 1 is john's and 1is his work cell.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
Yeah, I thankfully don't have a work cell phone.... it's enough to have to remember to switch from cell to pager when I get to work.

Heh.

Works alright, though, since that's how I remember to switch.... when I get to work, I leave the cell on my desk and put the pager on my belt, and when I leave I do the reverse.

It does get confusing, though, since I need two pagers... one for weekdays and one for weekends.

sheryls Back · 20 years ago
we have a duty pager that rotates around the department. you get it for 1 week and you are on call 24/7. unfortunately, my boyfriend is in the department so when he gets it, and i get it immediately after, we get it for 2 weeks! oh yaye.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
oy!
what fun!

:D
Erato · 20 years ago
I only have a cell phone. I don't use the phone much so paying for a land line isn't worth it. Plus, with free long distance and free night and weekend minutes, it's a better deal for me anyways.

haven't we had this poll, like, six times already?

*sits back and waits for someone to reply with, "'Not happy with the poll questions or options? Then let's see you do better, really! Suggest a poll!'"*

actually, due to work nonsense, i have two cell phones. i continue to have a land line. i honestly wish i didn't have a cell phone period, but there have been enough circumstances where they've been (really) necessary that i'm glad i do. i don't use it very often though if i can help it, though...
Annika · 20 years ago
I have two cell phones right now and now that I'm at my mom's for a bit again there is also a land line.
I wasn't actually going to post anything, but I thought I'd toss this out there, www.phonescoop.com if everyone who ever purchased a cute little lg phone stopped there first I wouldn't have a large portion of the calls I get..
sheryls Back · 20 years ago

? i love my cute little LG phone. it's the best phone i've ever had. it's far better than any motorola i've ever used - i have the LGVX6000, and it's never let me down. even after it's surgery (i replaced the faceplate, despite it not being truly changable).

my only complaint is that i cant cradle it between my head and shoulder very well, but you can say that for any little flip phone.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years ago

I do OK with my little LG 4010. Paul has the same one though and has had problems. I think it's just the fact that it's a free-with-the-plan phone and isn't meant to be stellar. But I don't need much, I like it, it serves me well. And after many years of being afraid of flip-phones I've adapted nicely. :)

nate... Back · 20 years ago
LG phones are the best!

Right now I have a 4500..... I actually still have my 510, too, which is by far the best phone I've ever owned in regards to ring tones... but... the 4500 is better in other ways.

The 510 had this thing where you could set it to vibrate twice... then ring. No other verizon phones have been able to do that, and it was AWESOME.
Annika Back · 20 years ago
crazy.. I get more calls about lg's not working than any other phone.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
That's ... really weird...

But maybe it's just due to you working for a second rate cell phone company?

I'm quite sure it's not the fault of the phone.
:)

Don't get me started on cingular, either.... they can't even get their damned CALLER ID working right. *shakes head*.... talk about basic.

ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years ago
Hrmm..my Verizon LG 4400 is able to vibrate twice and then ring. That's my current setting. Though the ringtones just suck.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
well, ALL cell phone "ringtones" suck.

What ever happened to having a bloody "PHONE RINGING" sound.

:P
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years ago
Mine is set to ring like an old-skool rotary phone. It freaks people out when it goes off. :)
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years ago
yeah I have a ring like that too. Scares the heck out of me.
lawrence Back · 20 years ago
seriously. the worst I heard was 'YOU HAVE AN INCOMING CALL!' which was on one of my coworker's phones. worse, though, he would set it to a better ring and a lower volume, but that didn't matter - every time he plugged it in to charge it would reset the volume to the maximum and pick a random ring.

those are the sorts of phones I want to hack and replace the people's ring 'tone' with the sound of a crying baby. :)
nate... Back · 20 years ago
hahaha.
Amen.

Despite your hatred of cells... and my love of them... we totally overlap on ringers.

People who have their phones on ring instead of vibrate in public.... ESPECIALLY if they have an annoying ringer.... just need to die.

Bender Back · 20 years ago
my ringtones are ironic injokes. I keep it on vibrate when I'm out of the house (I turn the damned thing off at shows/movies/concerts/funerals).

the problem is, I get earwormed with the songs.

my improv instructor has the best ringtone ever. "Our House", by Madness(?). It's really excellent.
Arbie · 20 years ago
I have had several cellphones but they are all just paper weights at the present time. I had a cell and no land line for awhile and it was ok except that there are two of us and if one of us went out with the phone the other was stuck without a phone, and it is weird to be at home with no phone access. Some people might think that is a plus. ;-)
emilie is CRANKY · 20 years ago
have left my phone at home today. silly emilie.
Phoenix Back · 20 years ago
This happens to me, too from time to time - but vice versa - leaving it in an drawer in the office :(
Bender Back · 20 years ago
