She has a voice like a band saw cutting aluminum siding in a small enclosed space.
AND she's so ugly she could stop watches. Other than that I'm sure she's fine.

i like Celine Dion.
yes, i really do. however, i can't say i like any of her albums after "S'il Suffisait D'aimer". much of the newish, "radio-friendly" stuff she's done all sounds the same. "Live A Paris" was a musically stunning album. "Les Derniers Seront Les Premiers" is a great song, as is "Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore". "Au Coeur Du Stade" was also a great album. there are just so many little intricacies in the delivery of the songs. or at least there was, until crap like "let's talk about love" and "a new day has come" came along. ick.

shes a horrible singer... when it comes to mechanics. sure, shes got a pretty voice, but doesnt sing properly. She'svery nasal and sings from her throat, not the diaphragm, where sound should come from. Once earlier on in her career she lost her voice completely for two weeks (like, couldnt even TALK) because of this. allegedly the doc told her that would happen again and her vocals are so strained she could lose her voice permanently later on.
plus, shes annoying :)

I don't know. On the one hand she's managed to perform a million horrible songs that made me want to cut my ears off. On the other hand, her early stuff wasn't so bad, up until Celine Chante Plamondon which I used to put on all the time at my parents' house.
Bad: she's hideous and has her own theatre in Las Vegas. For crying in a bucket. Good: she's really funny. I saw either Wayne Brady or Ellen Degeneres interview her last year and she seemed like such a cool, funny person. Nothing like what I thought. So I don't know.
actually, the support should come from the entirety of the torso. locking your diaphragm is unnatural.
the sound should be resonant and the air focused at the ridge behind the front of the teeth, and, really, the sound all comes from mouth shape. don't get me started on those accusations of people singing "nasally".
exactly.
people think that locking your stomach muscles = using diaphragmatic support, a physiological fallacy that many teachers still use, which works against relaxation. the word "diaphragm" needs to be removed from the vocal instruction vocabulary when it comes to breath support. you're really using your lower abdominal muscles, pushing down.
ooh. i love that album. i sang "Je Danse Dans Ma Tete" at some sort of school talent show once. it was such a bad fit for my voice and i kind of butchered it, but it was fun.
My chorus teacher in high school told us to forget that diaphram crap, diaphram is involuntary. She told us to sing from our genitals.
No it isn't any more than someone driving with his feet wouldn't be driving properly. There are many activities which have a right way of doing things. yes some people can overcome poor mechanics and still succeed but it is far easier if you do things right.

i'm not the biggest celine fan.
okay, i'm not. at all. i avoid her music. but come on people. "she's hideous" "she's so ugly she could stop watches." please. so she's a mediocre performer who has made it big.well gee. we haven't seen that anywhere else before have we? frankly, i think she's a lovely woman. i still won't listen to her music though ;) (which, while often trite, is still better than some other shite out there)

I know I'm a minority in these discussions, but I like her, respect her, and think she has a good voice. I also like Barbara Streisand and on some songs even Christina Aguilera (very few songs).
Celine Dion not a singer-songwriter and I don't think you need to be one to be a good musican. I've heard some good songwriters who suck much ass at singing, but get away with it because their music rocks. There's nothing wrong with specializing.
now that was a little creepy.
(when is a tub not a tub? when it's a jar.)
I'm with you on liking her voice, although I wish she'd emote a little instead of just singing loudly.
La Babs not only has a voice, but she *can* emote. Christina I find hard to like. Although not as hard as Britney. :D
I've always been disappointed by Barbra's acting career, she didn't do nearly enough musicals and hardly any of real quality after Funny Lady. She was a good enough actress to win an Oscar. She had a voice meant for musical theatre and has such a small body of work. She could have been the greatest ever.
