Torrents: Help please!

   Discussion: Torrents: Help please!
Dolphin · 21 years, 2 months ago

I'm coming out of lurker-dom to ask for help with the torrents. I've downloaded the software (TorrentStorm and mkwACT). I've downloaded the torrent files (8). I tried last night to use TorrentStorm to do the extraction. It is VERY slow - I think I started around 8 p.m. and at 7 a.m. this morning it was only 20% done. It looked like a 6 K/s average download speed.

I have cable internet - am I missing a setting or something? Having never seen Fruvous live, I'm anxious to hear these shows!

Jason Reiser · 21 years, 2 months ago
TorrentStorm is the program that's actually downloading the content. Keep in mind that these shows are pretty big... no MP3 compression here. 6k/s kinda sucks though. On a healthy torrent with several fast seeds, you should often expect 40k/s or better... maybe MUCH better like 300k/s on many cable networks.

Which torrent is only going 6k/s? We can get a few more seeds on it to help out... or direct you to an easier first download. The FruCon1 disc I just posted should be a reasonable starting point since it's short at least.

Basically, at this point you're downloading the files themselves.

This is a long slow process, and really depends on who is online sharing them at the time you're downloading.

One thing that can seriously speed up the process, however, is to make sure you're not firewalling ports 6881-6889.

If you're behind a firewall, or router, these ports are probably closed.

If you have firewall software on the computer, configure it to allow this port range.

If you have a router, go into its configuration and forward that range of ports to which ever computer you're downloading the files on.

cheers!

It won't work by magic? ;)

Yay!
Ducks!!!
*quack quack*

(and, it apparently will, but I still forwarded those ports anyway. heh)

Thanks for the help. I did some reading last night on firewalls but haven't figured out yet how to check if that is my problem (I have a wireless Linksys router).

Wow - 300k/s would be wonderful!

I'm not sure which torrent is running (I think it's one from 1998) - I'm at work while my computer is chugging away at home. However, I'll try the FruCon1torrent when I get home.

If you have a linksys router, then it blocks that range by default.

The good news is, it's really easy to correct.... just check to see what IP address it has assigned your computer, then log into your router (type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of your browser) and you can set up port forwarding.

On my linksys router, "Port Range Forward is under "Applications and Gaming". All you need to do is fill in the blanks and click "save changes".

ellen Back · 21 years, 2 months ago
I'm getting similar speeds on all the torrents, actually, probably partially because I'm downloading so many at once. The sheer volume of the shows being put up creates a wierd little problem :)
Dolphin Back · 21 years, 2 months ago

I have done the port forwarding for my Linksys router and I'm now getting rates as high as 15-20k/s.

However, when I click the Leeches column in bt.etree, it still shows that I'm firewalled. Is there anything else I should do?

There is still one that I'm getting really low rates -from 1999-08-18.

ahhh... you may, actually, have to restart your computer, or at least release/renew your IP (and make sure it's the same) before the port forwarding will start from the router.

I'm using plain old Bittorrent because that was what I found when I first downloaded a torrent before any of this fruvous stuff started happening. But I've noticed that there seem to be several clients out there. Do any of you torrent experts have any thoughts on which is the best and why? Should I get something else, or just stay with what I have?
stealthlori · 21 years, 1 month ago
I'm trying to d/l the 3/8/98 show. It was d/ling fairly fast (for my machine) earlier this afternoon (25-30kps) and I got 24% of it in a couple of hours. But it's been dead the past couple of hours -- the red light's on, number of seeds has reduced from 6 to 3, and I'm connected to none. Should I leave it up in hopes that a seed will become available, or kill my would-be connection?
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 1 month ago

And see, what's weird is I have that one in my window. And it's the only one that never has activity. It's "completed". The others I've fully downloaded are now seeding and others are getting them but that one? Just sitting there.

stealthlori Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
ok, that's just freaky. i figured the 3 seeds must be busy with other leeches, not just sitting there.
Brian Bernardini · 21 years, 1 month ago
Did I miss a link to this show?
Brian Bernardini Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
Never mind. I figured it out. :)
A.J. Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
It is probably that firewall thing that Nate and Jason were talking about. If you look at the info page that Jason linked you can then click on the seeds listing for a particlular show and see all the seeds and leeches. The ones who have port numbers (the number after the IP address) in parenthesis are behind firewalls, and unable to talk effectively to many machines. This is explained in great detail if you follow the appropriate links on etree.

Looking at it, only one of the 3 current seeds isn NOT behind a firewall, so there may well be only one effective seed. There are two leeches shown, and one of them is also behind a firewall.

141.151.91.xxx:(6884) 16.0 kB 3.48 MB 0.004 24.58% 0 B/s 1.1 kB/s 2:50:13 4 days, 17:23:08 1:47

Is that you Lori?

The long and the short of it is that you have to tell your firewall to open ports 6881-6889 for both incoming and outgoing TCP, or you will have performance problems, and sometimes will be ignored as a seed.
stealthlori Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
yeah, that is me, and i did open the ports. i also restarted a few d/l's so that other leeches would catch on that i'm no longer firewalled.

i'm noticing a limit to how many i can have going at a time tho ... 7 is simply too many. :( so i had to shut down a couple of seeds that weren't being used, and lower my upload rate, at least until i catch up a little. i'll start up those seeds again in a couple of days ... promise.
A.J. Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
I had to restart my computer to start appearing non-firewalled
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
Speaking of restarting. I just tried "start transfer" on the 3/8 show to see if I could jump start it and it worked. It checked and saw I had the whole d/l first, then turned into a seed and is now u/ling. Just so weird because I didn't have to do that for any others...they all did it automatically.
Zach · 21 years, 1 month ago

Okay, I was hoping that under this topic my question would be asked, but it isn't. So I'm going to feel dumb now.

How do I listen to the BTs after I download them? I'm so confused.

nate... Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
See the beginning of this thread.

All the info you'll need. :)
stealthlori Back · 21 years, 1 month ago

I gave 3/8/98 a break for awhile so I could finish another show, but I just restarted it. It started outcrawling -- between 0 and 2 kbps -- but now it's popping along at 14-22 kbps. Yay!

Jason Reiser Back · 21 years, 1 month ago
ABC client or TorrentStorm? Most likely you set the upload settings for that torrent to stop uploading after you've uploaded some amount (probably 100%) or some other limit like 24 hours.
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 1 month ago

TorrentStorm. ANd it never uploaded at all until now. It downloaded and just said completed and sat there. All the others started uploading and still are.

I dunno, whatever, at least now I know how to kick-start it if it happens again. :)

nate... · 21 years, 1 month ago
I opened up the necessary ports, like, several days ago... and have been showing as not firewalled since.

Now all of a sudden, it's showing me as firewalled again.
No settings/IPs have changed at all.

Are there actually other ports it uses that I'm not aware of?

stealthlori Back · 21 years, 1 month ago

Likewise here.

Because I'm now using bargainville.org's tracker andit saysto forwardports 6880-6999, that's what I set up last night. (Using Linksys.) I have the TCP protocol checked.

I'm downloading okay from the bargainville torrents (although lower than I'd expect given the number of seeds out there),but my upload rate is practically 0,even when I'm connected to peers. My etreedown/uploads are not firewalled and have not been for several days, and they've been crawling, or ina couple ofcases rocketing, along.

Currently I have open: 2 etree windows seeding only; 2 etree windows leeching and seeding; 1 bargainville window that should be seeding only, but it is firewalled and there are no leeches out there anyway; and 1 bargainville window that is leeching at up to 10 kbps despite being firewalled, but isn't uploading worth a damn. So I have horribleshare rates on bargainville. :(

Phoenix Back · 21 years, 1 month ago

that's strange indeed. I'm having no problems with bargainville at all. Leeching at 50k and seeding at top speed as far as my connection is concerned (I only have 256kbit upstream).

J. Andrew World · 21 years, 1 month ago
How do I listen to them once they are downloaded?
Jason Reiser Back · 21 years, 1 month ago

Most of the shows have been seeded in SHN format. SHN is a data compression for WAV files. If you're using Windows, you can...

a - get an SHN plugin for WinAMP and play them from your computer: http://www.etree.org/shnamp.html
b - get an SHN plugin for Nero or another CD burning app and burn them directly to audio CDRs: http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org/files/nxmyshn.zip
c - get a program to decompress the SHNs to WAVs and then burn those to CDR with just about any burning software ever written: http://www.etree.org/mkw.html

If you've got another OS, yell with what you want to do or look at the software lists on etree.
