National Novel Writing Month will be upon us before you know it. I know quite a few of us have done it in the past and are planning to do it again, so I thought it would be nice to have a forum for discussion of characters, plots, word counts, writer's block, and ninjas. And monkeys. And ninja monkeys.
If you're new to NaNo, you can learn more about it at their web site. Basically, it's a challenge to crank out a 50,000-word novel during the month of November, and I've always found it a great way to get me feeling motivated and free enough to write creatively. So who else is in for this year?

I have a first chapter of a novel due November 25 anyway, so I've been thinking about it. As a creative writing student who's taking 2 senior workshop courses and another senior course that requires intensive reading and the keeping of a constant "intellectual journal" (ugh, why am I taking this class?), plus working three or four days a week, it would be pretty much insane, but I'm thinking about it.
Just got a keyboard for my Cli. This enables me to be a completely portable Kath. So... there's another push towards NaNoWriMo. Convince me ;)

I am just going to write in minute detail what happens at goovie: sign my card!'s house concert. If you are going do something interesting, my Roman a clef depends on it.
ok, but no details about the orgy...oh, wait, you aren't invited to the orgy. :)
I thought I fan everyone else with palm fronds and feed them grapes.

Never heard of it. Very well might do it. Being a short story kind of girl, it'll be a challenge.

If you're interested, you can sign up starting today. The NaNo site's forums are also open, and they can be an excellent way to procrastinate; I'm still a little pissy about some things that went on there last year, but hey, if others are willing to forget and move on, then so am I.
*sigh* ok, I give in. I'll do it.
My novel's gonna suck, tho.
You have to wait till 3pm pacific time today. That's when the gates open.

last year's novel only got to 12000 words this year's will get to 50000 nano-wormy: the second frontier.
but there's no rule saying you can't have your own novel-writing month in october instead of november. :)
baaaaa.
we'll cheer you on, too. even tho we're not as cute as the boy. :)

anyone have a plot yet? i so completely do not. november is going to be painful. :)
Heee...one of the commands my doberman used to follow was "Plotz". :) He wasn't trained in English, we didn't have him first. :)
do you care to share it with the rest of the class? :)
protagonist is named Zevi, short for Zehava, she's not heterosexual, and she wants to be a rabbi. She lives in a small apartment in Brooklyn (or Manhattan) with Ceci, short for Cecilia, a formerly Catholic, currently pagan friend of sorts. Her other friends who have not shown up yet are Brigitte, also formerly Catholic and currently pagan, and Yasha (?) who is a half Jewish (patrilineal) Atheist. They're gonna have wacky adventures or somesuch.

I have to volunteer this week then I'm off to Chicago. I don't have time to write this year. Unless of course I go the same route I did last year. I haven't gotten much hate so far this year. Here is last year's novel.

my goal by the end of the night is 6500 words. i am at 4000. let's see how this unfolds. This is crazy. No one is allowed to wig out here, but I cleared 8K words over the weekend. That was in three separate sittings, mind you. I wrote after midnight for about an hour and a half; Saturday evening for several hours and for most if not all of the afternoon/part of the evening today. The end is obviously a long way off, but I'm already worried about how to tie it all together at the end. I've already changed part of the plot idea, because I'm afraid I'm never going to find the end. And, if necessary, I can always make the character actually MOVE back home instead of just visiting. :)
6734 at the moment. and my main character still doesn't have a name. gah.
right now she's [prot] for protagonist. eventually, if she ever decides to tell me what her name is, i'll be able to do the find/replace thing and take care of it.

Hm. I finally made up a name of TWO words and decided that if I need/want to, I can change the lead character's namelater. I'm not excited by the name, but it's a bit of a spoof that I can live with. The cat, however, needs a new name. "Snoogy Woogums" just doesn't seem a masculine enough name for a Blue Russian, does it? I did see my plot go off on its own little tangent before I whipped it back into shape. While many people advise against editting, I went back and added descriptions to pad the word count. I was able to rein the plot back to where I think I want it. Let's just see if it stays there. But if you change "snoogy woogums" into a one-word name you'll reduce your wordcount. And depending on how prominent SW is in the story it might make quite a difference. For the same reason I have considered changing "Marni" into "Mary Anne." Two words instead of one every time she is mentioned by name!

Countdown to NaNoWriMo. I worrying, it will be my first writing competition. I think my text about Ethical Dilemma will be okay for it.
