NaNoWriMo 2003

   Discussion: NaNoWriMo 2003
goovie is married! · 21 years, 6 months ago
National Novel Writing Month will be upon us before you know it. I know quite a few of us have done it in the past and are planning to do it again, so I thought it would be nice to have a forum for discussion of characters, plots, word counts, writer's block, and ninjas. And monkeys. And ninja monkeys.

If you're new to NaNo, you can learn more about it at their web site. Basically, it's a challenge to crank out a 50,000-word novel during the month of November, and I've always found it a great way to get me feeling motivated and free enough to write creatively.

So who else is in for this year?
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
nooooo.
come on. you know you want to... :)
lawrence Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
I'm probably going to try again, and then give up after two days and two paragraphs, because I'll again realise that I write way too concisely to actually come up with 50,000 words.
Melinda J. Beasi Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
I'm really tempted to try it this year... hmmm...
ellen Back · 21 years, 6 months ago
I might do it, especially if I don't get anywhere on my story before then. I figure I can write a lot of boring, meaningless descriptions that I can then turn into images for a graphic novel form
zil · 21 years, 6 months ago
i'm in the process of writing one now... I don't think I have the energy to start a new one and finish it all in one month...

NaNoWriMo 2003 expects too much of me, damn the NaNoWriMo 2003 .
hkath · 21 years, 6 months ago
I have a first chapter of a novel due November 25 anyway, so I've been thinking about it. As a creative writing student who's taking 2 senior workshop courses and another senior course that requires intensive reading and the keeping of a constant "intellectual journal" (ugh, why am I taking this class?), plus working three or four days a week, it would be pretty much insane, but I'm thinking about it.

Just got a keyboard for my Cli. This enables me to be a completely portable Kath. So... there's another push towards NaNoWriMo. Convince me ;)
Wintress · 21 years, 5 months ago
OKay. I've heard of this before and now I'm obsessed. I already have an idea I'm working with. In fact, I keep myself awake just thinking about stories I can use. Oh MAN am I going to hurt in November!!
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 5 months ago
I am just going to write in minute detail what happens at  goovie: sign my card!'s house concert. If you are going do something interesting, my Roman a clef depends on it.
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
ok, but no details about the orgy...oh, wait, you aren't invited to the orgy. :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
I thought I fan everyone else with palm fronds and feed them grapes.

Shelly Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
hrm.

Mamalissa! · 21 years, 5 months ago
Never heard of it. Very well might do it. Being a short story kind of girl, it'll be a challenge.
goovie is married! · 21 years, 5 months ago
If you're interested, you can sign up starting today. The NaNo site's forums are also open, and they can be an excellent way to procrastinate; I'm still a little pissy about some things that went on there last year, but hey, if others are willing to forget and move on, then so am I.
danced with Lazlo Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
*sigh* ok, I give in. I'll do it.

My novel's gonna suck, tho.
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
yay gella!
ellen Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
I'll sign up today as soon as it lets me :)
Wintress Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
Is it just me or is the signup not working correctly? I click the "I certify I'm 13 ..." link and it promptly tells me "that nickname has already been taken." Well. Great, but I didn't put in a nickname to begin with...
danced with Lazlo Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
You have to wait till 3pm pacific time today. That's when the gates open.
beth-pseudocanuck! · 21 years, 5 months ago
if i had a good idea, i think i could do it. gotta start planning now, though. yay! something to plan!

i'm so pathetic. lol.

so yeah, i think i'll give it another shot this year. i died last year after about 3 pages. ha.
soul groove feline · 21 years, 5 months ago

last year's novel only got to 12000 words

this year's will get to 50000

nano-wormy: the second frontier.

Shelly · 21 years, 5 months ago
so can i cheat and start it now and input it then???

*g*

i, like, have TIME now. which. in november, i won't. :P
Wintress Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
uhh. Sorry, no. It's blatantly against the rules to start prior to November 1 12:00:01. :) You CAN, however, start research and do outlines. Prose written before the official start is, if I remember correctly: "punishable by death."
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
but there's no rule saying you can't have your own novel-writing month in october instead of november. :)
Bender · 21 years, 5 months ago
I'll try... and I think I'll have a boy cheering me on, so that'll help. maybe. don't expect more than a page or two from me, though.
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
baaaaa.

we'll cheer you on, too. even tho we're not as cute as the boy. :)
meh · 21 years, 5 months ago

May as well give 'er a try -- the idea of a timeframe will either kill the story in my head currently, or push it out into daylight somewhere.

Either way, uhm, yeah.

danced with Lazlo · 21 years, 5 months ago
who's willing to share usernames?
meh Back · 21 years, 5 months ago

CloakedStoat :-) "Old" standby that's probably not the best choice, but it's an easy username/password combination for me to remember, as I've used it before.

Heee...one of the commands my doberman used to follow was "Plotz". :) He wasn't trained in English, we didn't have him first. :)

goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 5 months ago
do you care to share it with the rest of the class? :)
danced with Lazlo Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
protagonist is named Zevi, short for Zehava, she's not heterosexual, and she wants to be a rabbi. She lives in a small apartment in Brooklyn (or Manhattan) with Ceci, short for Cecilia, a formerly Catholic, currently pagan friend of sorts. Her other friends who have not shown up yet are Brigitte, also formerly Catholic and currently pagan, and Yasha (?) who is a half Jewish (patrilineal) Atheist. They're gonna have wacky adventures or somesuch.
Wintress · 21 years, 4 months ago

Anyone else overwhelmed after just a few hours?

What happened to the lovely dialogue I had in my head? The descriptions of people and places so I can reach my 50K sometime this month?? AGH!!

hkath Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
Heh, barely. I had to go pass out when I got home last night. I'm just starting now, but it's coming together ok. The important thing is if you find yourself pausing for too long, just give yourself a whopping slap :D
soul groove feline · 21 years, 4 months ago

i am already behind on my wordcount?
ack. 1617 as of the writing of this post.
how is everybody coming along?

goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
3173 of utter crap so far!

stacey, you're pretty close--it's 1667 per day, i believe.

is anyone posting excerpts anywhere?
Laura P. Back · 21 years, 4 months ago

I'm shooting for 2,000 a day, just in case I need to take a day off. Yesterday I made it, but that was only the first day.

I amso not ready to post an excerpt.

hkath Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
Dude, good idea. We should post excerpts here. Like a local forum, except... the locality if FHDC, not, like, Idaho. :D
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 4 months ago
I have to volunteer this week then I'm off to Chicago. I don't have time to write this year. Unless of course I go the same route I did last year. I haven't gotten much hate so far this year. Here is last year's novel.
danced with Lazlo Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
fix your link.
soul groove feline · 21 years, 4 months ago

my goal by the end of the night is 6500 words.

i am at 4000.

let's see how this unfolds.

Wintress Back · 21 years, 4 months ago

This is crazy. No one is allowed to wig out here, but I cleared 8K words over the weekend. That was in three separate sittings, mind you. I wrote after midnight for about an hour and a half; Saturday evening for several hours and for most if not all of the afternoon/part of the evening today.

The end is obviously a long way off, but I'm already worried about how to tie it all together at the end. I've already changed part of the plot idea, because I'm afraid I'm never going to find the end. And, if necessary, I can always make the character actually MOVE back home instead of just visiting. :)

goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
6734 at the moment. and my main character still doesn't have a name. gah.
Laura P. Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
Are you just putting "X" where the name should be or are you eluding the issue altogether with the creative use of pronouns?
goovie is married! Back · 21 years, 4 months ago
right now she's [prot] for protagonist. eventually, if she ever decides to tell me what her name is, i'll be able to do the find/replace thing and take care of it.
Wintress · 21 years, 4 months ago

Hm. I finally made up a name of TWO words and decided that if I need/want to, I can change the lead character's namelater. I'm not excited by the name, but it's a bit of a spoof that I can live with. The cat, however, needs a new name. "Snoogy Woogums" just doesn't seem a masculine enough name for a Blue Russian, does it?

I did see my plot go off on its own little tangent before I whipped it back into shape. While many people advise against editting, I went back and added descriptions to pad the word count. I was able to rein the plot back to where I think I want it. Let's just see if it stays there.

Laura P. Back · 21 years, 4 months ago

But if you change "snoogy woogums" into a one-word name you'll reduce your wordcount. And depending on how prominent SW is in the story it might make quite a difference.

For the same reason I have considered changing "Marni" into "Mary Anne." Two words instead of one every time she is mentioned by name!

Countdown to NaNoWriMo. I worrying, it will be my first writing competition. I think my text about  Ethical Dilemma will be okay for it.
Hilarycr · 6 years ago
Oh, I haven`t even expected that this site will be so cool, because by this time I`ve visited only this site http://buy-essays-papers.org/ and I`m satisfied.
