Poll: Best Christmas/ Holiday movie EVER! |
Discussion:
Best Christmas/ Holiday movie EVER!
Yes you do. You didn't mention the great theme song by Fame's Mr Scharofsky, Albert Hague. Slaid Cleaves does the best version of it ever featuring the classic accordion solo by Oliver Steck.

Some people will probably want to mention It's A Wonderful Life.
A Charlie Brown Christmas has to be a classic (Is it considered a movie?) Scrooged is Bill Murray at his finest. Die Hard can also be called a Christmas film, sort of. Home Alone is also a sort of Christmas film. Jingle All The Way is a laugh riot.

hands down. I love that movie.
I'm also fond of Miracle on 34th St.
I forgot to mention that film in my "Others" list. The remake of that film featured the Rutgers Marching band one year before I joined. They had to do a mock Macy's parade, and they needed a marching band. They also had an extra put on a Rutgers band uniform in order to shoot a shot of him ducking out of the way of a flying cymbal. Great shot!
Rutgers usually gets those calls for any New York shoot (I got called once for a David Letterman bit, his own Thanksgiving Parade starting a random cabbie) I also remember a wonderfilm film called Gift Of The Magi. Cute little film about a married couple who go to extremes to buy each other gifts, and it ends up because of the extremes they go to, the gifts they get for each other become irrelevant. Truly a film that defines the term "It's the thought that counts."
OK how did I miss this when I put in my own vote for IAWL? I'm a donut I guess. At least I'm not a failure, "No man is a failure who has friends."
How could I forget the GRINCH?
heh..shows I've been working toooo hard lately! I loved Charlie Brown too...and NOT HOME ALONE! grrrr. heh! I got cut off on a few, but I didn't want to put a million up there..Josh would have had me offed! heh! I also forgot MO34thSt.! I must have been lacking creative thought ..I clearly should have asked John! heh! *hugs* ~J~
I voted for Olive..It's my Fave of the New Christmas offerings..I love that Dan Castellaneta, Michael Stiep, and Drew Barrymore are all in the same cute story! heh!
and a filghtless Reindeer nemed Schnitzle! The songs are AWESOME, and it's FUN! ~J~
Don't forget that John Linnell penned one of those songs!
true!
oO we're not that bad!...we're really cute and funny..We're not that bad!.......except that Bunny!...Oo

That would be 'Babes in Toyland' with Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves. Drew and Keanu sing. :)
My thoughts exactly when I watched it!
and I own it on video! ARGH! :)
My cousin was an extra in that movie. In one of the crowd scenes near the end, look for a white Persian cat with a blue outfiit--that's Lisa.
As much as I love the George C. Scott "Christmas Carol," "The Christmas Story," and the abovementioned Drew Barrymore vehicle, I would have to vote for "It's a Wonderful Life." It's not nearly the nostalgia trip it's sometimes considered to be: The lead character jumps off a bridge, for Pete's sake, evil goes unpunished, and the Depression is still on at the end of the movie. But love and neighborliness might be enough for today. Pretty cool.

My favorite was always A Claymation Christmas, with the California Raisins, and hippos ice skating to "Angels We Have Heard on High"
Oh, and the two dinosaurs arguing about what "Here We Come a Wassailing" is about. Heh. .oO Here we come a waffling along the leaves so green Oo.
no, that movie rocked, for me it was between that and charlie brown christmas, which has vince guaraldi, who plays the only christmas music i like, besides happy christmas by john lennon
Christmas Time Is Here Again by the Beatles is also one of my favs!
Ringo - "O-U-T spells OUT!"
whatever happened to the california raisins? huh? they ROCK!! :)
I heard it through the grapevine that they all pruned up.

i voted for a christmas story, but i'll also put in a good word for the muppet family christmas, the christmas toy, and of course, emmet otter's jug band christmas (now out on dvd, apparently). not to mention christmas eve on sesame street and the fraggle rock christmas special. yay jim henson!
I was torn between A Christmas Story and Rudolph claymation 1964 thing (mainly because it's one of the earliest childhood memories).
Problem is, they are all just so dang good. Although I absolutely detest It's a Wonderful Life. Not because it's a bad film, but because it gets beaten to death every Christmas.
Not since NBC bought the exclusive rights to it. Now instead of it being shown about 50 bazillion times during the holidays, it is only shown once, as per NBC "tradition". At least until the next tradition comes along.
I've never understood complaining about this. I mean, you do realize that you can change the channels on your television, right? This is an awfully odd stand for a professed libertarian to take.
I miss It's a Wonderful Life being on TV all the time. I prolly only watched it twice all the way through per season, but I'd witch bits and pieces a million times. Plus, if ever I was bored during the holiday season, I could watch it.
"I've never understood complaining about this. I mean, you do realize that you can change the channels on your television, right? This is an awfully odd stand for a professed libertarian to take."
What? I can't complain about something I find annoying just because I'm a libertarian? Notice I do not say they should be FORCED to not show it. And NBC buying exclusive rights to it is not FORCING anyone not to show it. NBC bought an investment because they thought it would equal ratings and equal $$$. I also don't like SUVs and bitch about them, but doesn't mean it's not a libertarian viewpoint. Back when I only had broadcast TV and it was on 6 out of 9 stations I could get, yes it was quite annoying. Especially when the other three channels were a spanish channel, a sports channel, and a local station that sucked ass.
HEY! NO FIGHTING ON MY POLL!
take your sides...Michael, you want some water sweetie? Starfox! NO EATING THE SPIT BUCKET! ok.. "ding"
you say that now, but what did you say after about the 5th or 6th easter when they played The Ten Commandments?
Ahhh!
I loved that movie! It took me my whole childhood to watch, since it was so long, and I always had to go to bed before it was over..same for Sound of music! I could watch that on every statation all the time! *drool* ~J~
The problem with Emmet Otter is the wrong version is released on DVD/VHS. It's missing some of the songs we're used to seeing. Check out when buying it to make sure you're getting the version you are used to seeing.

You forgot to mention the only Christmas Movie to make the list of top ten films of all time and I think the only one to make the AFI top 100 films of the Century. It's A Wonderful Life is a perfect film. People tend to think of it as syrupy but large parts of it work as Film Noir. It deals with a man's feeling of isolation from the rest of the world and the idea that he is a total failure. The ending is not about his overcoming all his problems it's about realizing what he already had.
I hate that I didn't vote for A Christmas Story. I'm a huge Jean Shepherd fan and had been for years before the film was made. It's an amazing story which translates into being a great film.

I picked White Christmas. This may be largely influenced by the fact that I watched it last night. MmmmBing. Muppets always rock as well. And I love Miracle on 34th Street. And Scrooged. And even The Santa Clause.
HATE A Christmas Story though. I don't know why...I've just always despised it and have felt like a freak because of it. Seems everyone else adores it. :)
Anything with Bing Crosby also gets my vote! Also a big fan of the Bells of St. Mary's (not strictly a Christmas film but they always show it). :)
I picked White Christmas as well, but only because Holiday Inn was not an option...Holiday Inn is another Bing (and Fred Astaire!) vehicle, and the film that actually debuted the song White Christmas.
weighing in here regarding my FAVE movie genre~the Christmas/holiday variety!!!!!
i voted for other coz i'd say that though i LOVE white christmas, i love holiday inn. bing...fred...what more could you ask for???!!! also the bells of st mary's is one of my faves...and its predecesor, going my way{which i nabbed last yr in the bing crosby disco-double-pack with holiday inn!!!} going my way is GREAT!!!! think sister act II, but with bing in the whoopi role...sorta.... GREAT MOVIE...heartwarming -and- funny. another good yet semi-depressingish-makes-me-cry-every-time is fred macmurray in 'miracle of the bells'. rent it. ESPECIALLY ifffin you like old movies. under the animated type of this movie/special i feel i should also mention my 2 FAVORITE specials, 'the year wihtout a santa claus' and 'nestor the long eared Christmas donkey'{which luckily and ironically is included on the YWASC dvd!!} i have watched nestor twiice this year already and am lending it to a friend at work coz i was telling him about it. also, santa claus is comin to town is great. and ya for the shout out for 'emmet'!!!! o/' bar-be-que! well, bless my spi-rit, i swear it nev-er fails o/' tee hee. and...Christmas eve on sesame street??? like, hi!!! cookie monster is -heavily- featured. again, what more could you want for your holiday season???!! heh..i could go on forver, but alas, i hafta shop coz we're having a decorate your cubbies/rows/sections contest with a winter wonderland theme and i must rise to the challenge. silly fools...they know not whom they're dealing with!{heh..i already ironically had my stuffed 'bumble' from rudolph up there on my ledge for decoration!!}
See, this is totally why your my sis Shelly!! :-)

I voted for a Christmas Story - I saw a bit of it this weekend, when he's helping his dad change the tire and says "Fudge!" - only that's not what he says.
And Charlie Brown's Christmas special is the classic - the new Peanuts shorts they played afterwards last night just didn't do it for me. But the Yule Log - now that's got everything. Plot, character development, cinematography, social commentary, everthing.
But the Yule Log - now that's got everything. Plot, character development, cinematography, social commentary, everthing.
"heheheheheheh...she said YULE." I have 4 hours taped of the Yule Log from WPIX in 1986 when we first got our VCR. I love getting cozy next to the TV and sitting in front of the fire...on the TV...*sigh* ;)
heh! you're right!
I was out of my mind not to pick that one! heh! (there's a great version with a big hand lighting THE match that started it all!) Where can I get some fresh Sturgeon? ~J~
THE HAND WITH THE MATCH??? THE CREATOR??
I've seen the Hand With The Poker stir the fire once or twice, but never THE HAND WITH THE MATCH! It didn't happen to come out of a burning bush, did it?
heh!
no, it was just a hand... but looked very cool! "the creator!" heh! Melissa makes me happy!
I think of that as a Halloween movie, oddly. :)
I do love it dearly though... it is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Rich Little's A Christmas Carol!
It used to be on every year in the 80s on HBO and then they stopped playing it. :(
oh yeah!
wait...let's just stop there. Everyone will know we watched cheesey 80's Rich Little! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo! (most of these people have no idea who he is) I wish it were me! heh! ~J~
that was a classic christmas show! :)

feh. I bring up Mr. Magoo and everyone starts talking about something else. I'm hurt. Really.
i *HEART* mr magoo's chistmas carol and ironically almost picked up the DVD at hollywood vid last week for my collection!!!!
i think that mr magoo is one of the best scrooges ever. honestly. though i have yet to see the patrick stewart one. rowwwwrrrr. and listen to gella!!! she knows of what she speaks. carry on. :)
I really need to see if we ever taped it. :( I thought we did.

hey hey now... NO ONE thought of national lampoons christmas vacation?? im a huge NL movie series fan, and no christmas is complete without the airing of NL's Xmas Vacation on citytv or tbs!
clarke w griswold and all his family woes is just too comical to not have on the list! especially his rant near the end... just too priceless. "alleluia... HOLY SHIT! where's the tylenol...?" jen meyers
"Clark: Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Kiss my ass. Kiss his ass. Kiss your ass. Happy Chanukah."
"Clark: Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead? Cousin Eddie: Naw, I'm doing just fine, Clark." "Clark Griswold: Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no! We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here! We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f*cking Kaye! And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of a$$holes this side of the nuthouse! " "Clark: The silent majesty of winter's morn, the clean, cool chill of the holiday air, and an a$$hole in his bathrobe, emptying a chemical toilet into my sewer."
