I'm not really religious. But I do love Christmas. I know that's kinda not right.

But I love decorating and giving (and getting, yeah) presents. I love playing Christmas music. It's just the most fun holiday for me.

Why is that not right?
Christmas has never been religious in my family.... it's just a great time to all gather together and be a family. :)
I voted for that too.
Sara Woodward Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
I'm with Andrea here. Not real interested in getting presents, it's always hard to think of things that I need, but I love giving presents. I shop sales all year, starting the day after Christmas so I can be mildly extravagant.

And decorating, where the snow glitters outside and the tree glows and the house smells like gingerbread and pine... :-)

I love giving presents more than getting them. :)

I'm a Jewish Atheist and I love Christmas. Of course the Christians just co-opted the ancient holiday of Lawrencemas.

La Saint-Jean-Baptiste, osti!

*ahem* strickly Quebecois holiday, June 24th. Yumm.
Back · 22 years, 1 month ago

I have bad memories of  that day in 1984 when we went to see the tall ships in Quebec.  We had Ontario plates, and people told us since we weren't french, or from Quebec, we were NOT welcome.  Others told us to get out of town before night fall, or our car would be bashed, and we would in danger.  It was the first time I felt like "hey, this isn't what Canada is about.."

*blink*  whoa..

umm.. it wasn't me!  I was only 6 months old at that time!

That's not the way I ever celebrated la saint-jean.  and it's NOT true that non-quebecois aren't welcome.   Besides,  french (france-french) people don't celebrate that.  I think it -is- only quebecois, but it doesn't mean people aren't welcome to join in the the fesitivities.  I'm sorry you had to be treated like that :(

Apologies to any Candians reading...

I love July 4th personally. Sadly, for most people it's just about a day off from work, some things that go boom, and picnics. Most people have forgotten the history and great tradition of this country's founding and what a gutsy document the Declaration of Independence was.

It's the one day out of the year where we can look back and reflect upon what ideals this country was founded on. And how far we have strayed from those ideals.

...thanksgiving/BIRTHDAY/christmas/new year's.

i would've voted for birthday had it been an option (she loves attention, she craves attention). instead, i chose christmas, b/c it most adequately sums up the magic of the season. still, though, it's hard to beat that six week stretch of late autumn/early winter. and skeptics be damned--i'll always love birthdays, even if it means turning *gasp* older. ain't nothing wrong with that. :D --k, procrastinating away her collegiate snow day (woo hoo!).

it's halloween's benevolent twin! plus you have a religious obligation to get silly drunk.

hamentaschen, costumes, making rude noises in synagogue, goodie baskets to/from everyone you know....

no question.
sheryls Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
dude! purim rocks! it was always awesome in sunday school because you didnt have to listen to boring lectures for a day and party in the back of the synagogue and win prizes and wear costumes in april.

w00t! i voted for hallowe'en tho, since i just lovelovelove it! :D
Rachel Beck Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
I voted for Hallowe'en, too, mostly because I like dressing up in costumes. But I like cooking (hence, Thanksgiving), singing weird-ass carols (hence, the festivus season in general), and going to church (hence, Holy Week). Tough choice.
Jºnªthªn Back · 22 years ago
I voted with my stomach, for thanksgiving, but Purim was one of my faves when I was a kid. My mother always said I was a gastronomic Jew - I only celebrate holidays with good food.
sheryls Back · 22 years ago

exactly. and "accidentally forget" the fast holidays. :D

i like passover too, because i'm not orthodox, which means our seders last like, an hour, and then it's like "we're drunk! let's eat!" plus they're funny. and they let me run them, since my stepdad isnt jewish and my mom is a slow reader. so of course i put my own spin on things :D

our haggadahs say "eat the festive meal" on the page where you're supposed to eat dinner. so the "festive meal" jokes start weeks before. "mom, what are we having for the festive meal?" "what time do you think the festive meal will be?" "can we have brisket for the festive meal?"

where is Falcon Ridge weekend? That's by far my favorite weekend of the year. Commercially constructed holidays are silly!
