But Dave's is truly a masterpiece.

Still, I'm looking forward to a full length disc from Jian. I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion and I don't care. :)
Shelly Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
heh. and i was just gonna make a comment aboot 'i may have answered incorrectly coz i have 'the first 6 songs' but not the album coz it doesn't -exist- yet'..tee hee

and..yeah....let me add to the unpopularity by saying i wanna hear the full-length one as well. i mean..though i have fun dissing jian, i have fun dissing a lot of things.

but i still give them a chance.
Melinda J. Beasi Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
I'm with my husband. Dave's album is amazing. I really enjoy Jian's EP as well, however, and I look forward to the full album.

And truly, they are apples and oranges... if they hadn't been in the same band previously, I never would have thought to compare the two.

Hopefully at some point Jian will get his butt in gear and finish the full album because I love the EP just as much as Dave's CD. It's quite interesting actually to see what directions each of the band members went when the hiatus happened.
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
I'm right there with you too. Dave's CD is one of my favorite in recent memory. It's this wonderfully subtle happy thing, and there's not a weak point on it.

Jian's EP shows a lot of promise. The first two songs blow me away and give me tons of hope. The middle two are mindless pop to me. The last two are nice Fruvous-esque tunes. I'm really wanting to hear the final CD.

I love Dave's CD... it's great!

Jian's... umm... well, my mother always told me that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

So... yeah.... I like Dave's CD a lot!

:)
theri quite contrary · 22 years, 3 months ago
and Dave's CD is GREAT! Jian's is not...
Shelly Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
ok...and just so it does NOT appear that i was dissing or snarking at theri, i agree -wholeheartedly- that dave's is the superior of the two

MAN, can that man play...........
theri quite contrary Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
That's why Dave is so suave. And all that. ;)
Shelly Back · 22 years, 3 months ago

Which word?
bored, bored, bored.... Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
heh....I've got "Dave, You're So Suave" playing right now.

"Whoa, whoa Dave...you're so suave.
Oh Dave. I like your shave.
So Dave, I'll be your slave
To the grave, Dave. You're so suave."
- Wildroot Orchestra

This song was so funny live - what with the horn section playing squeaky ducks and all *g* I STILL think it would be a gas to perform this song at FruCon. It's definitely gongable.

To visit Ellen with me, but you get a different room!

I agree. Dave's is one of the most cared for and caring albums I've heard to date. I'm not sure what that means, but it seems to fit.

Jian's songs are fine, but the EP is completely over-engineered.

I'm full of unpopular opinions....
I really like "Baby Don't Lie to Me" and "When She Talks"
(let the rotton tomatoes fly!!!)

I originally had both albums, but the Dave album was a disappointment. Am I missing something here? Am I not getting it...? And I don't even have Dave's album anymore, because I gave it away! Foolish me...?
(And, by the way, how do y'all get those neat icons by your replies...?)
Mamalissa! Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
Dave's album was a departure from some high-energy fruvous tunes, but really fits in with "My Poor Generation" and the Krista Ortguissen (sp?) fruhead song. I can't say whether listening it more make it grow on you, but if you run into a copy again, listen at a low-key relaxing kind of time. And listen to the lyrics. My faves are "You Remind Me" and "Can't Get It Open."

As for the icons, there's a place in your profile to upload a thumbnail for your posts.

ObDave:
I love You Remind Me and CGIO as well! I'll toss Cedartown in to round out my top three favorite songs on Dave's CD.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Mike's project. I think it'll be wonderful. And by the way, does anyone happen to have the Globe and Mail article about Fordy? It supposedly came out in September or possible October sometime.

John J. Ryan Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
Any idea as to when his project will be released?
bored, bored, bored.... · 22 years, 3 months ago
oops -"possibly"

Oh, and I own both Dave's and Jian's recordings. I ADORE Dave's. Jian's...well, not so much.

And I promise to proof-read my posts from now on.....

lack of credit card means lack of Dave's Album.
I really like most of Jian's album. The problems I have with it mostly have to do with certain instrumental and engineering decisions which I view as unfortunate.
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
Which instrumental and engineering decisions in particular? I think I'm the only one who likes the sound of his cd. In particular, Quebec City and Astronaut are nicely polished radio-ready tunes that still are very enjoyable for me to listen to. I don't think that a polished production style is necessarily bad, especially in the case of Jian. He resisted a lot of the trends towards overcompression. The instruments have nicely defined spaces and ranges, without getting too cluttered, and the vocal engineering highlights his more restrained style for this CD without letting it slip back in the mix.

As for the instrumentation, the electric guitar guy has a distinctive style that I like, with a lot of nice melody lines on the low end of the neck. It reminds me a bit of Aimee Mann. That funky recurring bass drum fill in Astronaut is a really catchy and subtle hook (although the final version needs to make it sound more like the real bass drum, it's a bit too loud and deep).

I have nothing to say about Natalia and Baby Don't Lie, because I don't really like the songs. Father is a bit too compressed for my tastes, but it does a better job of drilling home the point of the song than a more subtle style would have done. The instruments are definitely in the trendy very dry, Thornhill-like style, but I think it sounds good.

I made this point before on Ji-spot.com but, hey, I'll share with all of you too!
With that said....
Have any of you noticed how the two cd's sound similar in the first tracks, kind of? You have to listen for it in the first lines - they kind of have the same flavour.
Hum it through!
"Drive too much, Brake and clutch"
.... now try:
"Build your fence, go on and build it high"

Do you see it? Or am I more bonkers than usual?
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
wow, freaky.. you're right.. take out the "go on and" embellishment and they're exactly the same melody . never noticed that before :-)
Andrea Krause Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
And just the "build your fence" part of the melody always made me think of the neverending story song. I always want to sing "build your fence...look at what you seeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

You aren't alone in liking the sound of Jian's CD Josh - I love the EP lots. :)

Good thing this isn't a DVN discussion...
Mamalissa! Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
Maybe I'm confused why a drummer is using synthesized rhythm. Or, if it is live, why it sounds so synthesized.

And Astronaut has a great hook, but it sounds like the harmonies are being sung under water by the borg. Ok, maybe not that bad.;-}

Quebec City has the contradiction of being a pop-song with political lyrics. Even hearing the lyrics throughout the song, I still find it jarring when Jian tells us to scream if we think he's right. It makes me think of pre-teen girls screaming at boy bands. And that pop-idol image detracts from the message.

The other songs are just so melodramatic, made more so by the synthesizers. I'm not sure Natalia could be less so with a lighter touch, but I think I'd like Baby Don't Lie much better.

Songbill Back · 22 years, 3 months ago
This talk about the production of Jian's record is really interesting... People are realizing the important (and seemingly infinite) decisions a producer can make in the creation of a record. I would have liked to have heard Jian go even further with the production- the "he might as well go for it all the way if he was going to go for it at all" philosophy. In my opinion, the production is a bit middle of the road--generally clean with some overdubbed voice, synth strings, synth drum tracks. How bout an orchestra? A bit of Hammond organ? A great example of production transforming a song is TMBG's original "Cyclops Rock" that was transformed to glam rock glory on "Mink Car." Anyway, I'm rambling...
