Hugh Grant (loner) meet charming boy has revelation

Reviews:

Starfox:

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Hugh Grant is simply golden in romantic comedies, and this one has a GREAT message in it as well. I was very surprised given the normal silly stuff that comes out of Hollywierd.

A girl named Becca:

Kinda cutsie/sappy, but somehow not clichd. Hugh Grant is adorable (I don't mean physically...though, come to think of it, he looks pretty good in this flick), and the kid is perfect...someone we've probably all known (or maybe been) at some point. Touching and optimistic.

jaye:

amusing, toni collette is great as usual, even if i can't remember how to spell her name, but if you're looking for an excellent hornby adaptation - and not just a good one - skip on over to high fidelity instead.

hkath:

was blown away by the movie, because after having read the book, I was pretty sure the movie wouldn't come close to the character detail that Nick Hornby put into his novel. But! They somehow succeeded! Not only that, but they succeeded while using original camera work and a soundtrack composed entirely of Badly Drawn Boy originals.

Sigh. Heaven.

Another thing I thought was incredibly interesting was the modernization of the novel. You wouldn't think that a novel written in 1994-1995 would be obsolete, but from the get-go it was clear that one of the main themes of the novel couldn't be present in the movie because of its huge clich value these days. They somehow managed to work around that. Not only that, but they also somehow managed to justify an incredibly cheesy ending that is a complete departure from the novel. I'm not sure how they did it.

But if you want to add to your enjoyment of the movie, read the book, and then get ready for a complete left turn, plot-wise.

WalkingContradiction:

It was really funny. I don't know why, and it's realy cheesy, but it was good. ALl you cynics out there probably would call it predictable and all that, but when you watch a movie, you have to "leave your logic in the lobby"
