I am very shy when I'm in an unfamiliar environment with people I don't know, but I can be pretty aggressive in my outgoingness when I feel like I can. At work I'm the hugger. Anywhere else, I hide in dark corners.
Zach Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Hehehe. The Hugger. That's my nickname in my dorm. My outgoingness depends entirely on situations and my mood. If I'm with friends and happy, I'm totally crazy. If I'm with people (no matter how nice they are) and unhappy, I'm a recluse.
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 5 months ago

I am painfully shy with most people. But I am a spazzy affectionate type person in groups of people who know me well. The getting to the point where people know me well is the really hard part. Thank goodness for the internet or it would almost never happen.

It's funny here at work. I've been in my new job/team for 6 months now. And I'm such a spaz and joker at this point that I often get comments that when I came they thought I was this quiet little mouse for the longest time and were shocked when I started coming out of my shell over team emails.

So I guess I am very very very shy. But I am not really quiet. Once the shy isbroken downI'm all Poof!

Yep.
Same for me.

I'm very very painfully shy around people I don't know... but around friends, I'm quite outgoing.

through high school, my shyness was painful and very limiting. in adulthood it shrank into merely requiring a gut check when i have to deal with people i don't know, especially if it's out of "safe" territory. (for example, i still put off making inquiring phone calls for days, if i can.)

and of course, when i'm with people i know and like, it doesn't show at all. :)

(for example, i still put off making inquiring phone calls for days, if i can.)

hee. that's me. that's me.
I'm such a complete failure on the phone. You have no idea. And at work I try to substitute phone calls by email whenever possible...

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

The phone is my worst nightmare when it comes to anxiety. It makes me nauseous to have to face making a phone call and I will put it off forever or ask someone to do it for me. Which helps me only temporarily seeing as I didn't end up facing the task. There's something about it...I hate talking to strangers in person but I can at least see their faces to make sure they aren't making fun of me or rolling their eyes or whatever. I'm all about the emails. I feel comfortable, I can edit my words, I sound more intelligent, etc. I have to actually write myself a script when I have to buckle down and finally make a call. "Hi, my name is Andrea Krause and I've been a patient at this office. I would like to schedule an appointment..." blah blah. I have to actually have it written in front of me or I stutter and mumble and just collapse.

Hate phones.

omg, i used to write out scripts, too--sometimes, i still do. but usually, i do everything by email if at all possible. i hate the phone. i even have trouble answering it.
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

this is all *so* true.
Once I had to make 2 quite urgent phone calls at work and I knew it would really get me in trouble if I didn't make them. And I didn't. And it really got me in trouble. Fortunately social anxiety issues caused by the phone have improved by now a bit but if I can avoid it...

Last summer when I flew to Falcon Ridge the airline lost part of my luggage and I had to bug phone them regularly for several days until I got it back. That sucked big time (And the guy on the other end didn't reallyspeak English).
that's why I looked scruffy af FRFF cuz the shaving stuff was in the wrong backpack

oh yeah. email r0x0rz.

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
awww, everybody looks scruffy at frff. being a grungemuffin is part of the fun. :)
zil Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

I LOVE scruffiness!!!

I don't shave much. I don't do my hair. I don't iron EVER. I don't wear make up. I almost never "match".

and I've turned talcott to the dark side too!! I pushed for the beard. and pushed for the untrimmed homeless look.... not that he was that far from it anyway. I love you baby! :-D

Phoenix Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
ooh for the scruffy lovers - Here are some super scruffy Richard Shindell pix ;-)
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
My dad always writes out stuff before he talks on the phone. My sister is the worst, I can't even get her to phone in a pizza order. I used to be a bit awkward on the phone with people I didn't know well, but I got over it in high school running music council and making dozens of calls for meetings and stuff every week. I find it's still always easier to talk to people I know well or to use e-mail or MSN instead. I love the internet. :)
zil · 20 years, 5 months ago

yeah! my first poll! not that I try verra often...

anyway, I'm UBER shy and antisocial, exept when I'm not. like breaking into the robot in the middle of the gap to embarass my little sis. or when I posed nude for a friends art project. or back when I was a cheerleader. shhh its a secret. in college I did some dubious things to pay rent too. *le sigh* so sometimes, most times, I'm shy. othertimes I'm... like I was meant to be sans shyness. hard to explain.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

Perhaps you're shy when the people you're encountering stand a chance of mattering to you? Like you're shy to meet a lot of us, but strangers can go f* themselves? :)

zil Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

just say it andrea! say fuck! ;-)

but yeah i think thats prolly exactly it.

soul groove feline · 20 years, 5 months ago
i'm pretty much the anti-shy. Which is funny, since i'm not witty or charismatic and i'm not good at thinking on my toes... i often end up making an ass out of myself because of it. It's also funny coz i really don't like sharing myself in places i feel i don't belong... but if i'm somewhere i feel i don't belong, i'm not really shy, just... nonintrusive.
if i'm somewhere new, i'm cautious in what i say or do until i understand my situation a bit better. I'm often nervous around people, especially new people, but that usually makes me do... wacky and loud stuff. example: the Jian impression at frucon 5 :)

if i'm depressed, i don't get shy, i just become a cranky old bear. :P
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 5 months ago
I'm very outgoing but very shy at the same time. As anyone who has met me knows I talk to people. I talk a lot. What so many don't realize is how self conscious I am about it. I so often force myself to do things.
Doktor Pepski, kommie · 20 years, 5 months ago
I used to be so shy that I never looked people in the eye when talking to them or never maintained aconversation longer than maybe a couple of sentences. But that was years ago, now it is a little hard when meeting new people, but after I get used to them, things go preety good.
Real-Accordion! · 20 years, 5 months ago
It really depends what mood I'm in. I mean, today, I was walking up to totally random people, saying "Say something random!" and if what they said was random enough, I'd pull out a cookie and say "Thats right! You get a cookie!" and give them the cookie.
That = Not shy. But I can be shy some of the time.
Wintress · 20 years, 5 months ago
I pick up the phone and dial. While the phone is ringing, I quickly jot down some points so I can remember what I am calling about/for.

At home, though, I won't answer the phone. Or call out for pizza. Or talk to the mother in law. Can't make me!

But overall....I'm shy at first. I like to try to figure people out. I'm quiet around people so I can see what their personality type is like. I hate doing something "awkward" or "wrong" around someone new, so I'm very questioning and observant at first.

Once someone knows me, though, LOOK OUT!! I'm loud, obnoxious and love it. :)
