Discussion: How do you communicate most often?
Rachel Marie aka RAI · 21 years, 2 months ago

I am so addicted to AIM, it's not even funny. I mean, it's cheap, easy... I am an AIM slut. I would really much rather communicate in person, but that's just so much harder...

However, benifits of the whole "AIM" phenomenon are that I have a few internet friends that I've met and they rule. Some that I haven't met either, and they also rule.

I dunno, I just think I really need to get away from the computer sometimes... and yet I don't. Alas.

an interesting thread, given some current discussions with melinda and jaci and carey...

the difference between space and place has gotten bigger and bigger. space (communicative proximity) has compressed to the point where your best friend can be halfway across the globe and you still have no trouble keeping good tabs. nothing will ever replace face time, sharing *place* (physical proximity). i grant you that 100%. but the compression of space has allowed for relationships beyond the wildest imaginiations of even just 10 years ago.

i wouldn't know any of you if it weren't for that. *sob*

I'd like to second this motion.

I'm sure I communicate the most in person, just because I spend more of my awake hours offline than on, but beyond that, it's almost all through frms.

yeah. definitely aim-junkie. or frums. depends on who i'm talking to. phone is usually for calling people i can see in five minutes to make sure they're home so they can either pick me up or i can walk over.

I'm not really sure what this question means.  How often do I communicate with whom?

I mean, there are a lot of people I only communicate with in person - some are pretty good friends here at school, some are people I hardly know.  And since there are so many of them, most of my communication is probably in person.

But there are also some people I'm very close to and communicate with often, whom I talk to almost exclusively online or, in some cases, through email.  These communications are very important to me, but I still don't think they outweigh the in-person ones as far as quantity goes.

However, I can say that I don't own a cell phone and don't use phones for much communication at all any more.

I would talk more in person, but I'm mostly surrounded by mortal enemies. My friends live far away, so I mostly use AIM or the phone.

yeah I frum people a lot, and email like a mad woman, but mostly I don't communicate with people I'm in contact with everyday because they usually look at me like I'm a freak. their awareness goes as far as harvest and their interests center around livestock.

I voted "e-mail", and that is probably the most used, but it is closely followed by LJ comments, discussion forums, frumessages, AIM, and so on and so forth.

I'm on AIM a lot talking to Andy (there are others on my buddylist, but they get ignored, sadly). It's a poor substitute for the phone and No substitute at all for real face time. But since he's in Mass and I'm in Md, face time is all too rare. As for the phone, well we can and will talk for upwards of four hours at a stretch, so that gets rather pricy. Hence instant messaging with occasional calls.

My other chief method of communicating with friends is the LJ comments section. I don't email much-- don't know why really.

Oh and Carey and I are reviving our letter writing habit too. (Which reminds me that I owe her a letter cos she wrote me weeks ago--*looks sheepish*)

In a whole day I suppose I most often commiunicate face-to-face, or I did....that was including work, from which I got laid-off last week. It was essentially retail so between the customers and the co-workers most communication was talking. Although a lot of work came in through email.

I almost never email Robin anymore, that would be silly, we live together. For some reason I almost never get frums from people and hence never feel the need to send any. Aim and Icq have joined the realm of used-to-use. Dunno why, it was very gradual.

I like the phone, I just don't use it as much as I used to. But I do enjoy when Nitsa calls, she always brightens my day.
