Jeopardy!

   Discussion: Jeopardy!
Andrea Krause · 18 years, 3 months ago
Just wanted to let anyone know who cared and didn't already know that Jeopardy is having an online test/tryout this week. Tomorrow, Wed, and Thursday, depending on your time zone I guess. http://www.jeopardy.com/indexflash.php We can try to follow in Gordon's footsteps! :)
Brian Dinsky Back · 18 years, 3 months ago

Now, I'm sure someone currently more able-minded than myself can come up with some sort of incredibly bad joke relating to the difficulty in following Gordon's footsteps, and howdoing so would be much easier if his last name were Lightfoot.

Lightfoot, difficulty following footsteps. GET IT????!!?!?!?!?!?!

Yes, I'm ashamed of myself, officially. It wasn't official, previously. Now it sure as hell is.

Thanks for the heads up! I definitely just registered. :) *Fingercross*
Andrea Krause · 18 years, 3 months ago
East coast test in half an hour! Running out of time if you wanna!
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I just finished it! I think it went pretty OK - what'd you think? Does everyone get the same questions?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I think the only way to find out is to say what some of your questions were and then see if other people had the same ones.

How do they stop people from cheating? Do they give very little time for each question?
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Not sure! I'm not sure how I did. Had a lot of answers, blanked on some, have no idea what their threshold is. :)

I imagine they could have the same questions since it's timed, not something you can take whenever. Plus it may be easier to slot people when they're all on the same page.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
It's 15 seconds per question. I hit enter when I had anything though so it went faster.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
When you take the test in person passing is about 35 out of 50. It varies slightly from test to test.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
So that is not enough time to do online research but you could have a group of people with you and someone says the answer when they know it. You could do it online actually, a group in a chat room and you post the answer in the room as well as on the test.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
When I took one in person I thought I did well and didn't make it, so I give up on predicting. :)
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Yeah, but if you get past this and are randomly selected to go to a next level, you have to take another 50 question test in person. So you still can't slide by without your own brain. :)
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Well, I thought a way to find out might be to ask someone else who already knew. But apparently no one already knew. :)
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
umm....lord protector? nfl superbowl team with somebody allen? depressing poet? knotwork sailor art?

Why am I blanking on remembering them. I was like on autopilot and then they were gone. :)
It's a girl! Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Those were the questions I got too. So I guess everyone answered the same questions.
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Yup. I had those too. And I just figured out the answer to the sailor art one. Dangit.

I remember one about the Brothers Karamazov, one about someone who was the son and the father of U.S. Presidents...something about an antisemitic French soldier in 1899... Oh, one with a quote from Oscar Wilde... Etc.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Yup! hee, good to know my karamazov guess was a good one. :)

I'm mad about not getting the antisemitic soldier one, because I KNOW I was just reading about it in wiki a couple of months ago but blanked completely.
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I was all over the Karamazov question. The antisemitic soldier, on the other hand, I had NO IDEA. That doesn't bother me as much as the sailor art one since I should have been able to get that. Oh well, I can always try again next year!

I think I remember more of the ones I didn't know than the ones I did. Like the Secretary of State 1973-1977.
nate... · 18 years, 3 months ago
who's now earwormed...

.oO I lost on jeopardy..... baby..... OOOOO OO OOO OOOOO. Oo.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 3 months ago
Today is the anniversary of the airing of the first Jeopardy back in 1964. I watched it. I must have been home from school for lunch.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago

what year were you on?

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
December 1990
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I wish I could see! :) I wonder if I was watching then.
It's a girl! Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I had to pass on the antisemetic soldier question. I'm mad that I put down the wrong answer for the father and son president question--because it's such a duh! answer.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Was the Anti-Semetic soldier question about The Dreyfus Affair?
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Yes! That's it! I don't know WHY I was reading about that a few months ago but I was and was so upset that it completely left my head. I get less upset when I just don't know things, but when I knew them and lost it? Grrr. :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
J'ACCUSE!
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
bless you!

(yes, yes, I know.)
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I'm either really slow or I'm remembering the President question incorrectly. It was something like "the only person to be both the father and the son of U.S. Presidents," right? I absolutely cannot figure it out. The only names that came to mind were one of the John Adams or one of the George Bushes, but any of them were either a father of a President or a son of a President, not both.

Am I missing a really obvious answer, or did I mis-read the question?

*Feels WAY too dumb to ever qualify for Jeopardy!
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago

Yeah I have the same problem as you. I'm just not getting it. And I remember the question the same way you did. I really don't get it. I thought of Roosevelts but that was cousin-y, right, so no person could be the father of one and the son of the other.

So confused. :)

ETA: Oh. Just found this. http://www.thecemeteryproject.com/Graves%202/harrison-john-scott.htm

Not so much a "duh!" to me, since I didn't know they were related...

A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
Dangit. Harrison. I swore I had remembered all the pairs of Presidents with the same last name. Adams and Bush were out because there was no generation in between, Roosevelt was out because they were 5th cousins, and Cleveland was out because, uh, he was just one person. :) So if I'd remembered that there were 2 Harrisons, it would've been a "duh" even though I didn't know they were gradfather and grandson.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago

Heheh i should have amended that to...didn't know they were related and forgot there were two of them anyway. :)

I am so unworthy of jeopardy!

Mamalissa! Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I bet if you were nice he'd let you watch the tape!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I very well might. actually Chris is bringing it tomorrow and he transferred it to DVD so I'll be able to make copies for people who want one.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
ooh! ooh! ooh! want! :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I thought you might :-)
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
I'm even less worthy, though, considering I can't even spell grandfather. Sheesh.
It's a girl! Back · 18 years, 3 months ago
*feels stupid now* I was remembering the question as asking what name of a president applies to a father and a son----so I was berating myself for not anwering Bush.

Actually I feel better---the question was harder than I thought.
Queen Lisa of Darlington Back · 18 years, 2 months ago
I'm impressed, or maybe it's the passage of time ... I definitely cannot watch the video of my own Jeopardy! appearance but it's only been four years ... :/
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 2 months ago
My plan is to be like Norma Desmond and just keep watching myself over and over again.

I'm ready for my close-up Mr. Demille.
renita Back · 18 years, 2 months ago
WANT!

ahem. yes, please :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 2 months ago
