curried goat

   Discussion: curried goat
Paul · 20 years ago
How many of you have tried or would try curried goat? I forced myself to try some at a housewarming party last week. I normally like curry but the idea of eating a goat is less than appetizing.

What was it like? I probably wouldn't try it as I don't like curry and from what I heard goat is like gamier lamb and I don't like lamb. Of course I don't like anything. I'm a very picky eater.

It was like somewhat gross as there was bones in it. I ate the sauce the bones were in over rice just to try it. I didn't want to be rude and not try it and also my wife ate it and said it was good. I am somewhat paranoid about eating meat that I didn't buy and cook myself. I actually watched several people eat it and waited to see if any like got sick before I tried it.

It may interest you that the origin of the Kosher practice of not mixing milk and meat comes from a passage in Exodus that refers to a goat:
"you must not boil a kid in his mother's milk," referring to a non-jewish practice at harvest time.

That said, goat is delicious. It features prominently in the cuisine of most of the world, despite its being a relative rarity in the squeamish US.

I don't understand the connection of eating goat curry and mixing milk and meat?? It's not really eating goat I object to but rather eating any meat that I haven't bought and cooked myself so I know where it came from, that it has been properly handled and prepared. I have found that alot of the businesses that sell ethnic foods know next to nothing about food safety. I have been in the food business for 30 plus years and have seen some pretty disgusting and dangerous practices by people in retail as well as restaurants...

Connection was only in my brain. It was the mystery meat aspect of your comment that made me think of dietary laws, and I was also thinking that many curry recipes call for small amounts of ghee or yogurt, making them not Kosher, the origin of which refers to goat. And the circle is complete!

Goat isn't bad at all.. though it's quite gamey and can be tough.

That's the reason a curry dish is perfect... you can slow cook it to break down connective tissue, and the intense flavor of the curry works with the goat meat.

plus it's fun to say "Goat meat."

My mom makes really good curried goat. I used to think it was gross, but one night for dinner my mom just gave me a plate of it, and it was awesome.

the curry place across the street from my work is the only local shop i know of that makes goat curry. It is boney but other wise i thought it was yummy...it does taste alot like lamb. of course i got it as a lunch take-out and managed to clear out the lunch room at work by the mere mention of what i was eating. One of the doctors i work with also gave me a great and easy recipe for goat curry in the crock-pot....must try it when i get home next week.

Anyone else think of Chad Gad Yaw when the see this forum?

Chad Gad Yaw is a passover song, the title is Hebrew for One Little Goat.

Had some this spring. I didn't care for it much, but my brother loved it.
That said, I don't really like lamb either.

But my parents are big curry freaks. When they first got married, they went to the curry house in st john's twice a week. So the people there knew them. ... my father once went caribou hunting. They brought a leg of it to the chef and told them to make curry out of it.

What?

The mock goat curry made by Nyota's Ting at FRFF was pretty tasty the one time I had it. I imagine that the real thing would be only better.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
yeah, I get that every year.

I just wish they'd do real goat... but... I guess that wouldn't go over too well at falcon ridge. :)
