   Discussion: Your Favorite Subject
caroline: tired. · 18 years, 11 months ago
I was bored, and I thought "This'd be interesting." What was your favorite subject in school? Ties are allowed. Also, what were your favorites and least favorites? I'm just kinda in school mode, oddly. And anticipating my schedule.
caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I'll start- I voted for history, because I think that's my favorite, beating science out by a small margin.

I hate french, and I don't like math very much, because I'm not great at it. I do tolerate certain algebra, however, because it makes sense. I'm the best at english, but it's not my favorite by any stretch of the imagination.

I like band and art, this year will be the first time since elementary school that i will have both in the same year. not so much phys ed, as the kids in my class are scary, like they could totally pull out a knife and kill me, and i've had gutknecht the perv as a teacher for two years in a row.

caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
ummm, because there's no "PE" in college?
caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
elementary school.

edit: or middle school/junior high, for that matter.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
no language in elementary school :P
caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
There's language in elementary school if you don't speak english. (and don't say that counts as english, because it would be your second language, and therefore like learning french or spanish in high school.)

and besides...how many threads were there about frff? about a billion.
nate... Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
since when?

I took spanish in elementary school....

derek harrison Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
here in canada every elementary school has french class, and in quebec they all have english class.
nate... Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
In other news.... [No Subject] is a hilarious subject line for this.

:)

caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
hmm..maybe i did that on purpose. ;)

in other news... you say "in other news" a lot.
nate... Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
yeah, I really do... don't I....

In other news.... it's time for me to go to bed.

:)
caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
in other news.... i am supposed to be in bed, so i suppose it's time for me too.

"ummm," my college required two pe classes, actually. and with all the findings about how much easier you learn languages when you're younger, more and more elementary schools and even preschools are adopting foreign language programs.

but dwd. again. why do we not have mods or something here so we can close duplicate threads, or rename threads that are unclear (for example, yes, caroline, we have several threads called "frff" or some variation, but if you open them, one turns out to be about the weather, one about transportation, one for 2004, one specifically about where to camp, etc, etc, etc.)

thank god for deborah and the mods at chicklit.dom, man. they know what they're doing.

I took french in 4th and 5th grade, not that it did me any good. I took it every year through tenth grade and I know more Quenya than I know French. Quenya is the High Elven Language from Tolkien. I also know more Sindarian, the Grey Elven tongue. I am such a geek.

SUNY College at Buffalo had a PE requirement.

I got out of it due to my visual impairment.

Queens college required two P.E. classes. I managed to take two classes I was good at fencing and golf. Fencing rocks.

Technically, I would say my favorite was Physics class.

More appropriately, I should say that my interest in the class was very off-topic. My teacher, a former white-hat, would give me completely alternative work to do (I was a problem student; give me something to distract myself, otherwise I'd distract others. Often). The classwork that she generally gave me to do was basically things like: circumvent a particular website's authentication (she was webmaster for each of the sites), break into a word document with A) brute force, or B) a dictionary-based attack, and some social engineering (heh, uhh, 5th amendment, thank you!). DAMN her class was fun.

A funny point of mention: A newsreporter came into our class one day, taking pictures for an article regarding the overpopulation of my High School (FHS, Framingham MA), and this reporter thought it was funny how the computer I was using was up against the corner of the wall, and a large filing cabinet. So, a day or two later my picture appeared at the header of the article in the paper. In reality, the classroom was mostly empty, and the computer was placed in the corner to keep both it AND me out of the way. The printed version of this newspaper lacked the detail of the on-line version, especially since in the color version, you could see the monitor from an awkward angle, featuring a fairly new website called FHDC.

It was a tie between math and science. I wanted to be a physicist. My favorite classes in high school were Number Theory, physics, and computer math.

Second year computer math was really the best because I taught the class. My first experience as a teacher. The way it worked is you took the class in 11th grade and about 5 of us taught it in 12th. We broke up the class into five groups of 4 or 5 and each student teacher had one group. There were lectures for the whole class. I usually did those though the other student teachers did some too.

My favourite has pretty much always been english. (Pretty much the only one I found interesting enough in school to pay attention to...)
sheryls · 18 years, 11 months ago

one lonley vote so far for Language - although, in HS, i wasnt keen on Spanish class. i was in jr high, because i was placed in Spanish I, which was a HS class in my system. i felt cool. we were the "advanced" language class. we could only choose Spanish or German. i wanted to take french but i could only take "pre-French" in jr high, so i went with Spanish.

before that, in elementary school, i had 4 years of Hebrew.

in college i nearly minored in Russian. i dropped it because the staff was..er, difficult. i was only 1 semester away from completing my minor, too. luckily, Computer Science came prepackaged with a General Science minor (if you take like, 1 extra science class, i took Astronomy! w00t!) so i killed it.

then, senior year of college i took Japanese. sadly, it stuck with me the most after 1 semester than several years of all the other languages i took.

I still have difficulty thinking in just one of the languages. if i'm trying to form a sentance and i dont know one of the words, i'll fill it in with another word from another language i've learned.

example: "I love my Japanese suitcase!" "Ani ohevet (hebrew) mi (spanish) nihon no (japanse) chimodan (russian)!"

ETA: and yes, i know "nihon no" is not the proper adjective of "japanese" because it's actually the posessive, it actually says "Japan's suitcase"

I know exactly what you mean! I can't really come up with any good examples at the moment, but I've definitely mixed Spanish and French words in a sentence using German grammar rules, and such. I used to be able to keep English separate but every now and then I have trouble switching from German to English. For the most part I can keep the Romance languages separate from the Germanic ones, but even that is sometimes tricky. And I'm going to be a Spanish teacher! Ack!

i sometimes say i have this little decoder-table in my brain w0t has two columns:

English | Other

in the first column is every english word i know. in the "Other" column is the first non-english translation of said word that comes to mind, most likely the last one i learned (meaning, if it's a pretty common word i most likely think of it in Japanese - like "cat," "dog"or "coffee" since it was my most recently studied language).

so it may look something like this:

EnglishOther
hellokonnichiwa
jacketpid'jak
tiegalstook
boyfriend novio
nightlilah
teachai or ocha (i go two ways with tea, depending on the type of tea)
superuber (once in a while, german sneaks in, although i've never learned it o.O )
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Haha.
I like that. I may have to appropriate it, as I think my own brain is structured similarly. O:)

(For the record, I've never actually heard a German-speaker use "uber" to mean "super-". I don't know if this is a regional thing or an American invention. Thoughts, anyone?)
sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

(see: "although i never learned it" :D )

Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I have that issue too, except that it only happens with French and Japanese. I'll be like, "Watashi no soeur... NO.. wait..." My third language is American Sign Language and, fortunately, the use of a different modality helps with the mixing it up. :o)
sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

indeed - and i imagine what keeps japanese clearest in my mind is it's unique sentance structure and, oh i dont know, RULE FOLLOWING that NO OTHER LANGUAGE ON EARTH does. well, i cant say that, i havent learned them all. but, example: russian. russian has all these rules..but only like, certain cases follow the rules..and everything else is an exception that needs to be memorized. *stab*

so, while difficult to read, i've found spoken japanese the easist to learn and keep straight, although at times i do fill in my noun-and-verb-blanks with other language type stuff :D

there wasn't enough room. it's other, i guess.

Heh.
For once the "No Subject" subject line is entirely appropriate. :)

it's a tough one between science and art/music, but i love Phycis so much!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
WooHoo, not only do you love physics but you type like me :-)
Phycis should be a place visited by Odysseus
Elwenaur Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
Ah, yes. The great island of Phycis! Where the crew gets stuck and distracted trying to figure out the string theory, while Odysseus is seduced by yet another woman.
